He finds the Measurement and Estimating module interesting as he intends to study a Bsc Hons in Quantity Surveying at the University of Ulster as first UCAS choice. His second is a Bsc Hons in Construction Engineering and Management.

28 26 Northern Regional College Engineering Enhancements HND engineering students may be eligible for some funding sources available through a number of organisations linked with the engineering department at Northern Regional College. Study USA Programme Engineers require good business skills therefore full-time HND Engineering students are eligible to apply for a one year business study course in USA. Over 200 participating colleges across USA offer fully funded (by British Council) places worth $25000 covering travel, accommodation, books, meals etc. Neil Craig (HND Electrical & Electronic Engineering) has completed his studies and Odhran Kelly (HND Manufacturing Engineering) is currently studying in Washington. STEM Scholarships STEM students would be matched with employers for scholarships and would receive a contribution towards their HND fees. Over the duration of the course they would increase their skills and knowledge and build relationships with their employer by working with them in the summer holidays and in their industrial placement year. Royal Academy Engineering Grants The Academy works with partners to ensure that more young people study science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects in schools, FE colleges and universities. They offer a range of professional development grants/awards and funding options for students wishing to develop themselves professionally. These may suit students already employed studying on part-time programmes. Sponsored HND Engineering Programme The aim is to offer full-time Sponsored HND Engineering opportunities for students pursuing a career in either Manufacturing or Electrical/Electronic Engineering. Places can be offered by participating companies. IMechE (Institution of Mechanical Engineers) The Institution of Mechanical Engineers is the fastest growing professional engineering institution in the UK. Its 100,000 members work at the heart of the country s most important and dynamic industries. NRC has been approved by IMechE and students are offered the opportunity to become members to enhance their future engineering careers.

29 Northern Regional College 27 Higher Level Apprenticeship in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Northern Regional College under ApprenticeshipsNI is offering a NEW PILOT Higher Apprenticeship in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (at Level 4). This programme has been designed to provide the manufacturing and engineering sector in Northern Ireland with high grade technicians and engineers who have practical skills, combined with a higher education qualification. The programme will facilitate progression for a Level 3 Apprenticeship and could also encourage future progression to Level 6 qualifications and enable apprentices to work towards Incorporated Engineer status. The employer will also receive an employer incentive depending on the age of the apprentice and the full attainment of the framework. Depending on the competency based NVQ modules chosen, the framework covers a wide range of job roles in advanced manufacturing and engineering which broadly fit into the higher-level skills requirements for differing sectors, however the pilot programme being offered by DEL in Northern Ireland will most likely follow the Engineering Manufacture or Engineering Maintenance routes for the moment. The competence and knowledge qualifications in this framework contribute to general competence as measured in the Engineering Council s UK specification and are endorsed by IMechE, IET and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS). If you have Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering, an A-level profile (with STEM subjects) or equivalent qualifications, there may also be opportunities for you, should a company employ you as an apprentice, to further your career. Over the course of the programme you will undertake the following alongside your employment: Level 5 Foundation Degree in Engineering (details on page 31) NVQ 4 in Engineering Manufacture NVQ 2 in Performing Engineering Operations (subject to Accreditation of Prior Learning) NVQ 3 in a subject specific to your role (subject to (subject to Accreditation of Prior Learning) The apprenticeship will consist of off the job training at college learning engineering practices in the workshop while starting the academic technical certificate. As you progress, you will develop your skills within your role in the company gaining experience and real hands-on knowledge through the expert teams based in the business while you continue your studies at college on a day-release basis.
