2 Simmons Middle School Eagle Handbook Welcome to Simmons Middle School As a part of the Aberdeen School District, our mission is Empowering all students to succeed in a changing world. At Simmons Middle School, we are committed to our additional mission of Achieving success as a safe and caring community. Our goal is to make your years with us among the best of your educational career. We want to be the best middle school in the country and if we work together, showing respect and responsibility, we can achieve this goal. General Information This information has been carefully prepared and presented so that it will help students adjust to, and become an integral part of, the Aberdeen School System. This handbook is not intended to cover all situations that may arise. The ultimate purpose of education is to help each student become an effective citizen. Developing and accepting the responsibilities and obligations of good citizenship will help students to participate successfully in the world tomorrow. ANNOUNCEMENTS The announcements are read in homeroom, as well as being posted in the classrooms. At the end of the day, the office will make additional needed announcements on the intercom. Students will be called to the office at this time to pick up individual student messages. You may access these announcements each day at ATTENDANCE POLICY It is important that habits of regular attendance be developed in middle school in order to prepare students for high school and future responsibilities. Students and parents must understand that students miss a vital part of their education when they are absent from school. Absences will be closely monitored throughout the school year by the attendance office. If a pattern of irregular attendance is recognized, it will be essential that students and parents communicate and work together with school personnel to support regular daily attendance. Doctor s notes are encouraged. SMS has adopted the following regulations to assist us in tracking student absences and determining if absences are excessive. After the sixth absence (excused or unexcused), the parent/guardian will be notified by letter about the absences and the attendance procedure. After the ninth absence (excused or unexcused), the parent/guardian will be notified by letter. He/she will have the opportunity to meet with the attendance committee to discuss the student s attendance and make plans to avoid reaching twelve absences for the year. After the twelfth absence (excused or unexcused), truancy charges will be filed if warranted. *Absences, excused or unexcused, are tallied for cumulative attendance purposes. The District Truancy Officer will be notified in the event of repeated unexcused or excessive excused absences. Absences for participation in school-related activities will not be counted. Student involvement in school related activities is encouraged unless involvement results in excessive absenteeism or has a negative affect on classroom work. If a student is going to be absent for a school activity, it is their responsibility to get their assignments prior to leaving school.

3 Absences will be classified into the following categories: EXCUSED: It is the parent s responsibility to contact the school to request the absence be excused by calling during the day or night. It is important that the school is contacted by 9:00 a.m. on the day of the absence. Personal Illness Family Emergency (death or serious illness) Funeral Medical or dental appointments which cannot be scheduled after school hours or Saturdays Religious holidays In-School Suspension Military Activation/Deactivation UNEXCUSED: Students who are absent without proper notification or verification from parent or guardian will be considered unexcused. Students with unexcused absences may serve In School Suspension. MAKE-UP WORK: For absences from school, students will be given the opportunity to make up missed work. Unless there are special circumstances, the time period allowed for make-up work will be two school days for each day missed. Students who do not complete make-up work in the time allotted may not be given full credit at the teacher s discretion. Homework must be requested by the parent when a student is called in absent and will be ready for pickup at the end of the school day. BACKPACKS/PURSES All personal items need to be stored in a student s locker during the day. Students will not be allowed to carry backpacks from class to class. Students will be allowed to stop at their locker in between classes to exchange books or put books away for lunch and elective classes. Purses will not be allowed in classrooms. BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL HOURS The building will be open for students at 7:25 a.m. If a student arrives between 7:25 and 7:50, they will be required to wait in the gym or cafetorium. Students cannot wait outside because there is no supervision. SMS has a closed campus and students must remain on campus during the school day. If students are not involved with before or after school activities, they must be in an area with a supervisor. Students who are not participating in an activity should be on their way home by 3:15. Students will not be allowed to go in and out of the school, nor should they hang out on school grounds. School campus must be cleared by 3:30. ***Please pick your students up on time. BULLYING Bullying is not acceptable under any circumstances. Bullying may come in several different forms including verbal (name-calling, teasing, pestering), physical (trip, push, shove) or through electronic devices which is known as cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is the use of , instant messaging, chat rooms, pagers, cell phones, or other forms of information technology to deliberately harass, threaten, or intimidate someone. If any type of bullying occurs outside of school, but it is proven that it is now causing a disruption in school, the administration reserves the right to take disciplinary action. The consequences received will depend on the nature and

4 the seriousness of inappropriate behavior and the number of prior offenses. (See SMS Conduct Plan) BUSSES Students have the privilege of utilizing the transportation services of the school district. Students must follow bus rules or they may lose bus privileges. Athletes may have to pay a fee to ride the bus to and from practice sites. If you have any transportation questions, call the manager at Dietrich Bus at CELL PHONES It is strongly encouraged that cell phones are not brought to school. In the event that a student needs to bring a cell phone to school, it must be kept in the student s locker. Cell phones will be confiscated if they are seen, heard, or used in the building prior to school, during the school day, or in detention. If there is reasonable suspicion that a student has been using the cell phone (texting, calling, taking and sharing photos) the administration reserves the right to inspect the phone. Consequences: 1 st Offense: Student may pick up after school, parent notified (written). 2 nd Offense: Parent pick up plus 30 min. detention 3 rd Offense: Parent pick up plus one day ISS. 4 th Offense: Consequences for additional infractions will be given as deemed appropriate by the administration COMPUTER USE Internet usage is a privilege. Students must have a computer use agreement signed and returned to their homeroom teacher in order to use the Internet at school. Responsible computer behaviors include: No abusing or mistreating any computer related equipment. No attempting to obtain or enter any passwords other than those provided by staff members. No installing or using any software or programs other than those provided by staff members. No adjusting or changing any controls unless told to do so by a staff member. No food or drink brought into any of the labs. COUNSELOR School Counseling Program Counseling and Guidance services are available for every student. The school counselor assists students with the problems that may get in the way of academic progress. This includes academic concerns, special needs assistance, and personal, emotional, and social issues. Students may be referred by students and parents and by teachers and administrators. The counselor meets with individual students, small groups, provides classroom guidance, and works closely with the grade-level teaching teams. School counselors do not offer long term personal counseling or family counseling, but can help find resources available in the community. Ms. Aldentaler can be reached at DISCIPLINE At Simmons Middle School we expect courtesy, cooperation, friendliness and respect for people and property. In the event that a student needs help with self-discipline, he/she needs to realize that he/she will receive appropriate consequences for his/her behavior. Parents/guardians will

5 be notified. The consequences received will depend on the nature and the seriousness of inappropriate behavior and the number of prior offenses. Out of School suspension will cancel a student s participation in any school events on that day. Violations that are against the law will result in suspension and/or police/court referral. (See Progressive Discipline Plan) DRESS CODE Students are expected to dress with standards that enhance a safe learning environment. Attire that creates a health or safety hazard, invades the rights of others, detracts from decency and decorum in school, or disrupts the educational environment will not be permitted. Profanity and suggestive themes, such as alcohol, drugs, tobacco, sex, death, suicide, or violence will not be permitted on school attire. (See JICA) All garments must completely cover the upper and lower body and cover the waist at all times. o All shirts must have a single shoulder strap that is at least 2 wide. o Underclothing should NOT be visible. o Skirts, shorts, and skorts must be mid-thigh or longer. (In determining appropriate length, a student may hold their arms at their sides; the length of the garment must be at least to the bottom of the student s longest finger.) No headgear, chains, studs, studded jewelry, or face paint. No coats in the classroom without teacher permission. No clothing with excessive holes or holes located above mid-thigh. No heelies (shoes with wheels) are allowed. The principals have an obligation to enforce the Board of Education s policy in this area. Normally, if dressed improperly, you will be asked to call parents and have appropriate clothing brought to the school or administration will provide an appropriate shirt to wear. ELECTRONIC DEVICES (see electronic reading device information below) The primary focus at Simmons Middle School is to create a productive learning environment. Because we work together to achieve this climate, toys, lasers, radios, stereo headsets, Ipods, MP3 players, personal CD players, all cameras, and beepers are a distraction. They should not be brought to school. If students choose to bring these items to school, they will lose them, and they will only be released to parents/guardians or they may be held in the principal s office until the end of the school year. ELECTRONIC READING DEVICE (No Ipods, Ipod like devices, or cell phones) Students may bring their electronic book device (Nook, Kindle, ereader, etc) for the purpose of silent reading. It is a privilege rather than a right; thus, when the policies are abused, the privileges may be taken away and confiscation and/or discipline action may occur. At no time will students be allowed to connect to the Internet while at school. Students will take full responsibility for the device and secure the device when not in use. Each student using an electronic reading device, along with his/her parent, will need to sign an Acceptance of Responsibility and Use Agreement Permission Form. This form can be picked up from any classroom teacher or the office. Consequences: 1 st Offense: Student may pick up after school, parent notified (written). 2 nd Offense: Parent pick up plus 30 min. detention 3 rd Offense: Parent pick up plus one day ISS Privilege of using an electronic reading device is revoked.

6 FOOD and DRINK (Energy Drinks) Candy, pop, and juice will not be allowed in the classrooms. Snacks are not to be used in the school buildings. There may be exceptions to this rule if teachers are having a special activity in their rooms. Students will be allowed to have water with them in class. Chewing gum may be allowed during the school day at the discretion of individual classroom teachers. Energy drinks will not be allowed in the school at any time. Students will be asked to dispose of the drink immediately. FERPA - Confidentiality of Information The Aberdeen School District has developed and implemented policies and procedures on the confidentiality of information consistent with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) authorized by 20 U.S.C. 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99. The parents/guardians of a child who is now or was enrolled in the Aberdeen Public Schools shall be afforded, in accordance with this policy, an opportunity to inspect and review all education records concerning that child. Confidentiality procedures are assurances that personally identifiable data shall be used for the purpose for which it is collected and be released only in the manner provided by law. Parents or eligible students have the right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the district to comply with the requirements of FERPA. The name and address of the Office that administers FERPA is: Family Policy Compliance Office U.S. Department of Education 400 Maryland Avenue S.W. Washington, D.C HALLWAY CONDUCT Students are expected to show respect for themselves, others, and school property at all times. Horseplay will not be allowed and students may be referred to the office for further consequences. (See SMS Conduct Plan) HARASSMENT Harassment consists of physical or verbal conduct related to a person s race, color, religion, creed, ancestry, national origin, age, disability, or other basis prohibited by law. Sexual Harassment Sexual harassment is any unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, sexually motivated physical contact or other verbal or physical conduct or communication of a sexual nature. Reporting Acts of harassment will not be tolerated. Students or guardians can report such discrimination or harassment to a teacher, principal, or counselor to make a report. Additional action may follow in accordance with procedures through the District Title IX Officer.

7 HOMEROOM Students begin each day in Homeroom with his/her homeroom teacher leading activities designed to help students be successful in school and in the community. Activities will include service projects, challenge activities, themed activities and sustained silent reading. HYGIENE - PE UNIFORMS Students are required to wear a PE uniform, and need to wash their PE clothes on a regular basis. Deodorant should be used by the students and applied only while in the locker room area. Students need to be considerate of those with allergies and asthma by not using cologne, perfume or smelly lotions in the hallway or classroom. LEAVING AND RETURNING TO SCHOOL DURING THE DAY You may not leave school without observing the following procedure: Have your parents/guardians call the attendance office to receive approval for your planned absence. For safety reasons, parents must come to the office window when they are picking their student up for an appointment. It is necessary for office staff to see who the child is leaving with. Sign in and out at the office before leaving and upon return. LOCKERS A locker will be assigned to students at the beginning of the school year. School lockers are the property of the school district and under certain circumstances may be inspected by school personnel. Possessions are the responsibility of the student. Lockers need to be locked at all times. If a student mistreats his/her locker, he/she will lose the privilege of using it and have to carry items from class to class. At the end of the year, he/she will be financially responsible for any mistreatment of a school locker. Do not bring large amounts of money or other valuables to school. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items. LOST AND FOUND Go to the office to return or recover any lost and found items. It is a good idea to mark items with the owner s name so they can be returned without delay. Any found object that is not immediately returned to the office or to an employee could be interpreted as theft. LUNCH Simmons Middle School has a closed lunch period and food cannot be ordered in. Food and beverages may not be taken outside of the lunchroom. No seeds are allowed at anytime in the building. Our lunchroom is a clean and friendly place and students will be respectful in keeping it that way. Students will report to the lunchroom within 3 minutes of dismissal from class. Students may purchase a juice during lunch from the vending machines. Lunchroom rules: Only 12 at a table Respect each other Do your share to keep things clean Any throwing of food will result in a minimum of one week of lunch detention

8 Money can be deposited into student lunch accounts by bringing a check to school and depositing it in the box by the kitchen or by the office window. Students need to remember their lunch account number. Money should be deposited by 10:00 a.m. in order for it to be available for lunch that day. My School Bucks is an Internet program that allows parents to make deposits and track student lunch accounts electronically. (More information available on the district website.) *Parents taking students out for lunch need to call the office to set this up by 10:00 am. *Parents may bring lunch from an outside vendor for THEIR student only. MEDICATIONS Students must bring all medications to the office with a note signed by a parent/guardian and physician. The original container and specific directions will be kept in the office. Students should keep their inhaler in their possession in case they need to use it. Parents should send a note to the office informing us the inhaler is with their child. Students are responsible for remembering to take medicines. If a student gets hurt at school, he/she should report the injury to a teacher immediately. PARENT PORTAL Here you will find instant access to accurate, current and confidential information on your child(ren) s school attendance, grades, class assignments and more. For more information regarding the portal and how to sign up, please call Cheryl, the middle school secretary. PLANNERS All SMS students are required to use the Assignment Notebook that the school orders. They may be purchased from the school for a nominal fee. Planners need to be taken to every class every day as it is to be used when a student checks out of class. Students are expected to record assignments in their planner daily. If a student loses his/her planner, the student is to report to the office to purchase a new one. PHONE USE Students are allowed to use the phone outside the office window. We ask that they limit their calls to three minutes and only use the phone when absolutely necessary. When it is necessary for students to make a non-emergency call, they will only use the phone provided to them in the office in the mornings, lunchtime, and after school. Students will not be called out of class to receive messages unless they are of extreme importance. REPORT CARDS Students will receive mid-term grades 4 ½ weeks into each quarter and formal grades every nine weeks. Parents/guardians can contact teachers with any questions they might have about their child s classroom performance and behavior. It is important that students attend conferences with parents/guardians to keep on top of their progress. RESTRICTION OF DIRECTORY INFORMATION Each year schools in Aberdeen maintain school directories that list student names, addresses, and phone numbers. This information is available to public access upon request. Types of information that may be disclosed as directory information include: student s name, degrees and awards received, address, most recent previous institution attended, phone number, participation in officially recognized sports, activities, date and place of birth, dates of attendance, major fields of study, address, class schedule, full or part time status, and

9 photograph. Under PL , Section 9528 (a) (2), a student or parent of a student has the right to prohibit the release of the student s personal data which the school would otherwise supply for military recruitment. Under No Child Left Behind, all schools that receive federal funds must give military recruiters the same information they provide to colleges so one cannot be restricted without the other. If you wish to restrict the release of any of this information, please contact the principal s office for the necessary form. RULES FOR SIMMONS MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCIALS The following rules are in effect for our school socials. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the school at All students must remove their coats or jackets before entering the dance. 2. Students are not to be in any other part of the building during the social. 3. Any student who intends to leave early from the social must bring a note from parents or the parents need to call the principal and indicate when their child will be leaving the social. 4. The social will be from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. 5. Any student not in attendance during the afternoon of a social will NOT be allowed to attend the social. 6. Any student who was assigned out-of-school suspension during the day of the social will NOT be allowed to attend the social. 7. Doors will be locked at 7:30 p.m. Nobody will be allowed to enter after 7:30 p.m. 8. Parents should be at the school by 9:00 p.m. to pick up their son or daughter. 9. Admission to the Simmons Middle School socials will be allowed ONLY to Simmons Middle School students. 10. Supervision will be provided by school personnel for all school sponsored socials. 11. In addition to the rules stated above, all school rules, as stated in the handbook, will be in effect. SCHEDULING Schedule changes are made during the year only at the request of staff. Students in vocal music, band, or orchestra can only drop these courses at semester time after previous approval from the teacher, principal, and parent. SCHOOL SAFETY Fire and tornado drills will be conducted throughout the year. In addition, building lockdown procedures have been developed and will be practiced by students and staff. Classroom teachers will give students specific instructions regarding the various procedures. It is important to be prepared for emergency situations. Students must follow the school procedures for fire and tornado drills. To ensure everyone s safety, students must be silent in the hallways and remain with their class and teacher.

10 STUDENT ACTIVITIES SMS students are strongly encouraged to participate in co and extra curricular activities. Participating in these activities is a privilege. Schoolwork comes first and athletes may, on occasion, have to miss a practice, competition, or activity for academic reasons. Students must be in school the entire day to be allowed to participate in after-school events and activities. Exceptions to this rule would be scheduled medical appointments, death or serious illness in the student s family, or special circumstances beyond the student s control. Prior notification must be provided whenever possible. Daily/Weekly information available at STUDENT DRIVERS- parking and rules: 1. We discourage students in middle school from driving to school. Because of the amount of traffic before and after school from pedestrians and cars, there is a potential safety hazard. Therefore, after one warning, any student found using a vehicle carelessly or recklessly will not be allowed to park in the school parking lots. Parents will be notified if a violation occurs. 2. All vehicles must be registered in the office. 3. All vehicles must be parked in the designated areas. 4. Parents must send a written note excusing their student to drive themselves to any appointments during the school day. TARDIES Being on time is an important habit to build. Students will be counted tardy if they are not seated in their assigned seat when the tardy bell rings. Students who arrive after the bell has rung, will need to report to the office to obtain a pass for admission to class. Consequences for excessive tardiness during the school day include: Violations 1 through 4 warnings only. Fifth violation and further violations will result in 30 minutes of detention. *The Administration reserves the right to deviate from this discipline plan to fit the needs of all students and/or school personnel.

11 Consequences for excessive tardiness in reporting to school on time: After 10 morning tardies, students will be called to the office and notified of tardies and contact parents. After 20 morning tardies, parents will receive a letter from the office. Parents need to follow up the letter by contacting administration. TEXTBOOK FINES Good care of the books is each student s responsibility. Students will be assessed fines for any of the following: Ink on a page, torn pages, missing page or pages requiring a new book Lost or destroyed book Any cause for rebinding the book Fines will be levied for unnecessary damage to all books Classroom teachers will assess the fines and students may pay the fines to the teacher or the office. TRANSPORTATION (Bicycles, rollerblades, skateboards, scooters, etc.) Simmons Middle School realizes that some students may rely on a bicycle as a means of transportation to and from school. Students must take full responsibility for securing their bicycle in the proper area. Locks are strongly recommended. Students are welcome to ride a bicycle, skateboard, roller blades or a scooter on public sidewalks but are not allowed to use them on campus grounds. If a student chooses to ride a skateboard, scooter or roller blades on Simmons Middle School Campus, it may be confiscated, and it will only be released to a parent/guardian. VISITORS Parents and other adults are always welcome to visit the school. All visitors need to report to the office on arrival to the building to obtain a visitor badge. It is helpful that parents make an appointment prior to their visit by calling the school at WEATHER For emergency school closings, listen to the radio or watch the local TV stations for information.

12 Communication with Staff Parents are encouraged to contact their student s teachers if questions or concerns arise. Please call Simmons and leave a message for the teacher to return your call ( ). All teachers have school addresses. Parents who wish to correspond by are encouraged to do so.
