1 The ishine Student Center, an academy of Springs Charter School, is excited to offer an exciting learning environment for students, staff and community. Since enrollment in the ishine Student Center is completely voluntary, we assume that the students who attend the learning center are happy to be here and anxious to learn and contribute in positive ways. To ensure safety and security for everyone, there are a few guidelines and rules that are necessary. Putting it simply: BE RESPECTFUL BE RESPONSIBLE BE SAFE. I will RESPECT myself by: Getting as much as I can out of my learning opportunities by being on time and involved, bringing necessary materials, cooperating with teachers, staff, and students, and completing assignments. Wearing appropriate clothing that is clean, comfortable and appropriate (See specific dress code). I will RESPECT others by Speaking kindly and respecting personal space, keeping my hands and feet to myself. Following a rule of NO PUT DOWNS and NO BULLYING. Everyone, including me, should feel emotionally safe at the ishine Student Center. Talking to a teacher or staff member to get assistance if I m having a problem with another student. I understand it is NEVER OK to physically or verbally attack anyone at ishine Student Center. Making sure that my behavior does not interfere with another student s learning, or a teacher s right to teach. I will RESPECT the learning center by Following the rules for the classrooms, playground, and learning center. Treating the people, building, grounds, materials, and resources with care. I will not do anything to cause damage to people, books, equipment, supplies, rooms, etc. Putting my trash in appropriate containers Always staying in designated campus areas Never bringing dangerous, illegal, or controlled objects or substances. I understand I could be dropped or expelled from Springs Charter, if I do. DRESS CODE Students and staff should be well-groomed and neat, wear clothes and shoes that fit properly, and practice good hygiene. We appreciate parent cooperation on this issue. The following items are inappropriate at ishine and will result in having to change clothing or being sent home. YOU MAY NOT WEAR OR HAVE SHOWING: Halter tops, spaghetti strap tops, low cut tops, strapless tops/dresses, crop tops where the stomach is exposed. Hip-hugger pants that expose skin or underwear Sandals or open-toed shoes if participating in PE Underwear, pajamas or slippers Piercing on the face or body other than ears and no plug earrings Pictures, symbols, or words on clothing, school supplies, and/or hats related to drugs, tobacco, alcohol, sex, violence, tagging, gang association, suicide or disrespect toward another person Mini Skirts without tights or shorts Short shorts with an inseam less than 3 inches No hats will be permitted inside the building Hair styles that have a negative impact on the learning environment are not permitted

Parents are responsible to be available to pick up students who have committed a serious infraction. 6. Conference with parent, student, teacher, and administrator. 7. Possible suspension or drop from the Springs academy program 8. Possible suspension, drop, or expulsion from Springs Charter School. POLICE NOTIFICATION Appropriate law enforcement officials will be notified under, but not limited to the following circumstances: 1 When a weapon, including any firearm, knife, explosive, or other dangerous object, is taken from a student. 2 When a student possesses a replica of any firearm or other deadly weapon, and the replica is used in a threatening manner towards any other person. (Student subject to arrest under Penal Code ) 3 When a student possesses, furnishes, or sells drugs, alcohol, controlled substances, or look-alike substances. 4 In any case where a student has assaulted, attacked, or menaced a school employee, the employee and the employees supervisor is required to report the incident to law enforcement. 5 When the Director/designee request police to conduct or assist in conducting a search. 6 When an illegal article is taken from a student. 7 When a student caused injury to another student if circumstances warrant such a report, i.e. hate violence, serious injury, attacks, etc. 8 A staff member has a compelling reason to suspect child abuse. POLICIES Visiting or observing classrooms at the ishine Student Center: If you wish to observe your child s class, you may make a request to the Site Director at least 24 hours in advance. You will be expected to follow our classroom observation guidelines, available online and in the office before going into a classroom. Visiting the ishine Student Center: We require that any person coming on to Springs ishine s Campus gain must check in at the front desk. Please sign in and put on a visitor s badge. This is a precaution for the safety of our students. Smoking is never allowed on the campus. Parents on Campus: Any concerns that a parent may have with a child other than their own must be brought to the attention of a teacher, administrator or office staff. Parents may not speak to another child regarding a discipline concern or an incident between their child and another student. By approaching a child on campus, you violate his/her rights to be safe and secure and open yourself up to possible criminal charges of assault. Since parents have no authority over other parents or children, you must address your concerns through school officials who do have the necessary authority and responsibility for seeing that issues are properly addressed. Volunteers: We encourage volunteers. Please describe your interest and complete a volunteer request form in the office. Depending on the work, volunteers may be asked to have a current negative T.B. test as well as complete DOJ fingerprinting. Arrivals and Departures: 1. Students should arrive no sooner than 15 minutes before class begins. There is no supervision prior to this time. 2. Students should enter through the front door, closest to the front desk. 3. Students are NOT allowed to loiter prior to class in the parking lot, in front of the main entrances, or at the side entrance. Students are to remain in the learning center for pick up after dismissal. 4. Student should arrive on time for school and should not be taken out before the end of class. Excessive tardiness and/or absences present academic problems and are contrary to the signed student agreement. 5. Once class has started, parents must sign students in and out at the office.

3 6. If someone other than the parent is picking up a student, that person must be listed on the emergency form. 7. If a parent is late to pick up a student, more than three times, they will need to meet with the administrator to discuss further action. 8. Students may not leave the Center s grounds during the school day without written parent permission. Students must stay in the designated/supervised area while waiting for pick up. They may not wait in an unsupervised place. 9. At ishine Student Center, students are not allowed in a classroom until class begins and a teacher is present. Change of Address: Please notify the ishine Student Center of all address, telephone, or changes. Emergencies: It is important that we have accurate, up-to-date information concerning the name and telephone numbers of persons to contact in case of emergency concerning your child. We need to be notified immediately when changes occur. In an emergency, children will only be released to persons listed on the emergency information sheet. A child will only be released to a person 18 years or older. Parents are responsible for picking up their child when they are contacted by the ishine Student Center because of illness or injury. Failure to do so could result in being dropped from the program. Medication: Prescription and over-the-counter medication may only be brought onto campus accompanied by a signed doctor s request with dosage instructions, a parent request and the medicine in its original bottle. This is to be checked in at the office. The forms are available in the office or online. Lunch / Snacks: If Students are on campus all day Friday, students must bring lunch to school with all necessary utensils. Students are not permitted to heat food. Drinks such as Monster and Red Bull are not permitted as they could put younger students at risk. Snack time will not be provided in every workshop, please encourage your student to eat a sufficient breakfast and lunch. Cell Phone / Electronic devices and toys: Cell phones must be shut off while on campus. Students may use their cell phone only with permission and in the presence of a staff member. No ipods, headphones, electronic devices, or toys of any kind are permitted at school without specific permission. Students must adhere to the signed compute/internet agreement contained in the student agreement document and listed in the student handbook. Safety: When bringing or picking up your children, please follow all safety guidelines. It is a safety hazard to have children darting in between cars in the parking lot. Release of Phone Number/ Addresses: Occasionally, your phone number or address could be given out to a parent volunteer who will be coordinating events for ishine Student Center. If you do NOT give your permission, please contact the ishine Student Center. Release of Photographs: Your child s photograph may be used on the River Springs website, yearbook, newsletters or other public relations documents. If you do NOT give your permission, please contact ishine Student Center. Lost and Found: Lost items, including clothing, may be claimed in the LOST and FOUND box located in the office. Lunch pails, jackets, backpacks, etc. should be clearly labeled for easy identification. Unclaimed LOST and FOUND items will be donated to charity monthly. Comments, Suggestions and Concerns: To efficiently resolve matters of concerns, we have established the following protocol. Feel free to contact our teachers to set up an appointment. First, go to the teachers with concerns about their classrooms. Our teachers are happy to set up an appointment. If concerns persist, contact the Site Director, Sue Miller Hurst. If you are still not satisfied that your concern has been properly addressed, contact Debbie Essel, Chief Education Officer of Springs Charter School at If your concern does not involve a teacher or classroom, go directly to Site Director, Sue Miller Hurst, or our Site Facilitator, Karena Giorgianni, if Ms. Miller Hurst is not available.
