Time Investigation & Measurements in Europe Two year ( ) project funded by: Scuola Secondaria di Primo grado G.G.Belli, Rome, Italy King Edward VI High School For Girls, Birmingham Gran Bretagna Open Schoolgemeenschap Bijlmer, Amsterdam Olanda Summary If there is one word that sums up the essence of everything, it must be Time. This project will involve European students in a journey into the discovery of time in order to investigate and understand humankind s continuing search to measure, define, use and control 'Time': from a world ruling time to a time-ruled world. Time is a basic human concept. The basis of our awareness of time comes from our experience of nature: heartbeat, day and night, seasons. We may reflect on the past and plan for the future and this understanding allows us to transcend the limitations of our lifetime and take responsibility for the future. As Plato wrote: Time was made together with the sky ; the main emphasis will be on the link between time and astronomy. However, contributions from other curriculum areas both scientific (mathematics, biology) and otherwise (history, geography, philosophy, languages, art, music) will increase students awareness of the many roles of time in our lives, cultures and scientific endeavours. Students of varying ages and abilities will work in activities designed to motivate at a range of levels, and will report on their findings through conferences and on a dedicated website. The opportunities offered to develop confidence, to engage in peer learning and to improve linguistic and communication skills will make a great contribution to students personal development and the key life-skills and competencies needed to take their place in society as active European citizens. Summary of Activities 19 March Monday Visitors arrive. Visiting pupils collected by host families. Visiting staff book into hotel and eat at restaurant in Rome 20 March Tuesday - TOPIC Rome in Ancient Time Morning: Opening Ceremony. Midday: Observation of the Spring Equinox in the Church Santa Maria degli Angeli (ancient Baths of Diocletian) Afternoon: : Visit Colosseum guided by students in multinational groups; ORISTORIA: orienteering game tour in Roman Forum Evening: Visiting pupils spend evening with host families. Visiting staff - restaurant 21 March Wednesday TOPIC The Vatican city and around Morning: Workshop at school (in multinational groups). Morning and afternoon: visit Sistine Chapel, St Peter s square and Castel Sant Angelo Evening: Star party&observations at school 22 March Thursday - TOPIC Rome in Renascence Time Morning: Workshop at school (in small multinational groups). Afternoon: Visit Campo di Fiori, Piazza Navona, Fontana di Trevi, Piazza di Spagna (gametour in multinational groups). Evening: Visiting pupils spend evening with Host families. Visiting staff - restaurant 23 March Friday TOPIC The Pantheon and around Early Morning: visiting lessons at school. Morning: WS about measuring time at Pantheon and Piazza Montecitorio (with the obelisk and the giant sundial). afternoon: visitors to airport for departure 2

Welcome. Refreshments available pupils go home with host pupils/ families Once visiting pupils have departed, visiting staff have a tour of school and set up posters on notice boards in foyer.
