2 Winter Quarterly Education Conference Iowa Health Care Association and Iowa Center for Assisted Living are offering multiple subjects at this education session. Each training session is designed to offer you and your staff the latest management, leadership, and teamwork strategies for continued success and quality in long term care. For each paid registration fee, participants may choose the session they would like to attend. Seating is on a first-come, first-serve basis. It is not necessary to declare your choices on the registration form. The schedule is subject to change. If a speaker or topic is cancelled or changes for whatever reason, we will make every attempt possible to get a suitable replacement speaker and topic. SPECIAL NOTE: Seminar doors will close promptly at the times mentioned in this brochure, credit for attendance will not be granted to those arriving after these times or leaving prior to the completion of the program. Providership regulations do not allow for partial credit to be given for any portion of a session. Late arrival or early departure will result in forfeiture of credit. The programs specified for Assisted Living Management have been approved for continuing education credit for maintaining the Assisted Living Management Certificate sponsored by ICAL. 5 Winter Quarterly Education Conference Program Descriptions General Session (1.5 hours CEU) 9:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m. Health Care Reforms Impact on YOU and Long Term Care Speaker: Dave Hebert Dave Hebert, American Health Care Association s Senior Vice President of Policy and Government Relations, will discuss the current status of health care reform in the U.S. Congress and how it may affect you. He will talk about the issues affecting nursing homes and assisted living and what we might expect in the final bill. Dave will also talk about the politics surrounding health care reform. Your entire staff will get a better understanding of what is coming in the next few months now that health care reform is upon us. Education Breakout Session 1 (1.5 hours CEU) 10:45 a.m. 12:15 p.m. Maximizing Reimbursement Part ONE Medicare and Medicaid Update Speaker: Jeff Steggerda CEUs approved for: N, SS, DH, ADM This session will address a variety of key topics surrounding recent developments for Iowa Medicaid Reimbursement to Nursing Facilities. The Governor recently released implementation plans for the across-the-board cuts and the timing of changes to Medicaid payments to providers. The program will also update participants to the proposed changes to the Accountability Measures (Nursing Facility P4P) and status of the Quality Assurance Fee Program. Additionally, recent cost report processing developments and updated data tables will be further points of discussion. The Holistic Journey: Exploring the Role of Palliative Care Speaker: Lana Teeples This session will explore the role that palliative care can play in helping residents remain in Assisted Living and Nursing Facility settings, while ensuring a higher quality of life, even as they near the end of life. Learn how residents and family members can benefit from additional support as they address problems associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention, assessment and management of pain and other symptoms. New Assisted Living Rules: Less than 30 days! Are Your Bases Covered? Speakers: Stacy Hejda CEUs approved for: N, ADM, ALMC The new assisted living rules go into effect on January 1, The final rules issued included significant changes for facilities. Are you sure you ve implemented all the necessary changes? Do you still have questions about certain aspects of the new rules? Do you want to make sure you have all your bases covered and that you re on the right track? If you answered YES to any of these questions, make sure to attend this session to ensure you have all the information you need. This training will review the most significant rule changes, as well as, address questions and provide insight into the rules implementation.
6 Education Breakout Session 2 (1.5 hours CEU) 1:00 p.m. 2:30 p.m. Human Resources Legal Update Speakers: Jo Ellen Whitney This interactive session will explore some of the major issues affecting your workforce management. Topics discussed will include practical issues and policies for contracts, an update on job service, workers compensation, how to terminate and unemployment hearings, social media policies, and how to deal with complex leave issues under your FMLA policies. Other agency compliance issues such as Drug Free workplace policies will be addressed as well. Maximizing Reimbursement Part TWO RACs, ICD9 Coding Speaker: Jim Wilkes CEUs approved for: N, SS, DH, ADM How a facility focuses on documentation and chart organization plays a key role in claim integrity. The speaker will discuss upcoming RAC audits, MAC issues on claim processing, and developing solid Medicare claim processes. Attendees will learn how to speed up claim payments while maximizing reimbursement and avoiding claim review problems/denials. Attendees should be prepared to ask questions about situations they have and are being presented with on Medicare. Role of the Ombudsman in Assisted Living and Nursing Facilities Speaker: Jean Yordi This session will provide information on recent changes in State s Long-Term Care Ombudsman office. There will be a discussion on the role of the ombudsman in assisted living and nursing homes, and a review of what administrators and directors should expect when an ombudsman enters your building. There will also be an overview of the Long Term Care Ombudsman s responsibilities and authority. Implementing Successful Revenue Teams Speaker: Clint Maun CEUs approved for: DH, ADM, ALMC Education Breakout Session 4 (1.5 hours CEU) 2:45 p.m. 4:15 p.m. Healthcare organizations today must have surefire results from their efforts to positively affect their budget s top line (revenue line). Revenue must be maintained and/or increased to cover the required expenses, staffing, resources and involvement to satisfy today s customers. How do you make teaming pay off for a substantial Return on Involvement, i.e., Return on Investment? The proven methods detailed in this session will allow the participants to learn how to successfully utilize twelve-week involvement teams to address the four critical components of a revenue cycle: Marketing, Sales, Admissions, and Fulfillment. Feel Safe at Work Preventing Workplace Violence Speaker: Major Len Murray, DSM Police Department Trainer Most facilities are not prepared to handle incidents of workplace violence. To protect your workplace and to avoid liability, it is important for employers to become proactive. Preparing a workplace violence plan and training managers and staff on the warning signs of workplace violence is crucial. And all of your staff members need to know how to respond if workplace violence should occur. During this session lead by a Des Moines police officer, their will be a discussion on taking control of an out-of-control situation, identifying erratic behaviors, diffusing in an aggressive situation, and promoting welfare, safety and security in your facility.
7 Winter Quarterly Education Conference Instructor Bios David E. Hebert, JD, serves as Senior Vice President, Policy & Government Relations of the American Health Care Association (AHCA), which represents nearly 11,000 for- and not-for-profit nursing homes, assisted living residences, and facilities for the care of people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. Dave joined AHCA in April 2006 having most recently served as counsel at Alston & Bird, LLP, where he focused on legislative and regulatory issues in health care. He served as Chief of Staff for then Majority Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO), the third ranking Republican in the House of Representatives and was twice named by Roll Call to its list of Fabulous 50 Movers & Shakers Behind the Scenes on Capitol Hill. Prior to his work on Capitol Hill, Hebert directed the government affairs office of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA). He also served as an Adjunct Professor in the Liberal Studies Program at Georgetown University. Stacy Hejda is a Consultant for Assisted Living Partners, L.L.C. She serves on the Quality Committee, Co-chairs the Payment for Services Committee, and is Director at Large for the Iowa Center for Assisted Living. Stacy provides consulting services to assisted living facilities focusing on program development and regulatory compliance monitoring as well as working with the Elderly Waiver and HUD rental assistance programs. Stacy received her Assisted Living Management certification in the spring of Clint Maun is a nationally recognized speaker for his innovative leadership in healthcare consulting, speaking and research. He is one of a select few to receive the CSP designation of distinction, Certified Speaking Professional, from the National Speakers Association. As co-founder of Maun-Lemke, Clint has over 38 years experience in healthcare management, leadership, quality enhancement and self-development programs. Clint s acclaimed leadership process, "Smooth Operations", has been successfully implemented in small and multi-facility businesses nationwide. His visions, ideas, techniques and concepts are currently at work in thousands of organizations throughout the country. Jeffrey Steggerda is a Reimbursement Consultant and President of Brighton Consulting Group. Jeff has worked in the long term care profession since He began working with IHCA in 1993 as a Reimbursement Consultant. His roles for IHCA have included creating and maintaining several informational databases to support the quality, finance, and data objectives of the association. Jeff is a CPA, receiving a BBA degree. His career path includes public accounting and positions as Director of Accounting with regional long term care companies. Lana Teeples, RN, is a Care Consultant from Iowa Hospice. She has 13 years Nursing Experience including 2 years Hospice Case Management. Lana trains nurses and other healthcare staff on a variety of topics including end of life care, pain management and symptom management, palliative care to name a few. She served on Pain Committee at Greene County Medical Center for 5 years and is active with the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research. She has completed the Director of Nursing Training Course and MDS Training Courses through the Iowa Health Care Association. Jim Wilkes is the Director of Processing Services for the Brighton Consulting Group. Jim has more than 14 years experience managing and consulting skilled nursing facilities on all aspects of financial and human resource recordkeeping. He has led more than 60 Iowa nursing facilities through the Medicare certification, claims, and cost report cycles since 1995 and provides valuable leadership to independently controlled organizations across Iowa. Jim is a 1991 graduate of Central College in Pella. Jo Ellen Whitney is a senior shareholder of the Davis law firm, having obtained her degrees (B.A., magna cum laude, and J.D.) from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Jo practices primarily in the areas of labor and employment law, healthcare law, privacy, and fair housing. In the area of labor and employment, Jo assists businesses with policy and contract development, human resources planning, disciplinary and termination issues as well as regulatory compliance and litigation matters. Jo works extensively in the field of health law, privacy and confidentiality issues. Jean Yordi has worked with the Office of the Long-Term Care Ombudsman for 10 years. She began as a local Ombudsman and has served as the States Long-Term Care Ombudsman for the last 5 years. Jean previously worked with Hospice of Central Iowa and the Alzheimer s Association In a variety of positions.
