1 What next? Your guide to drug and alcohol treatment and recovery pathways in Brighton and Hove

2 What Next? Brighton and Hove has a range of services available to anyone who wants to make changes to their drug or alcohol use. Drug and alcohol services are delivered through partnerships with charities such as CRI, Brighton OASIS Project (BOP), Equinox and Brighton Housing Trust (BHT) and NHS services including Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT). Your treatment will start with an assessment of your health and social needs and strengths, and will include assessment of your personal qualities, skills, past experiences and any support you already have in place from family and/or friends. You will then be linked to a care coordinator, the professional who will remain with you throughout your treatment and support you to achieve your goals. Your care coordinator will meet with you regularly and together you will draw up a recovery plan. This plan will be based on the goals you want to achieve during and after treatment, and will be used and reviewed regularly to ensure we re on the right track. Your care coordinator will support you during your time in treatment, and will talk with you about your options. They will make referrals to specific treatments or other services that you might need. Some of the treatment options are shown on pages 3-7. Other services that are available to help you on your journey are shown on pages 21-42: your care coordinator will help you decide which will be the most helpful. 4 Recovery Plan Options All services including residential rehab are free if you are registered with a GP in Brighton and Hove. Please talk to your Care Co-ordinator if you need help registering with a GP. Your care coordinator will be able to advise you about referrals to these options. They will meet with you regularly to monitor progress and talk about the choices available. Care coordinators provide one-to-one support for drug users, as well as a 12-week relapse prevention group once you are free of illegal drugs. A 12-week counselling programme is available via your care coordinator. Opiate users (and PATCHED clients) will be provided with a Prenoxad minijet pen, and will be trained how to use it in an opiate overdose emergency. If you are still using illegal drugs you can also access harm reduction advice on how to keep yourself safer. PATCHED is a service for people affected by the substance use of a family member or loved one. It offers free support, advice, counselling and education. Freephone Monday to Friday 10am-4pm. POCAR (Parenting Our Children, Addressing Risk) is a programme to help drug and alcohol using parents to address substance misuse and meet the needs of their children. A crèche is provided at OASIS for the women s POCAR. Detoxes can be undertaken in the community or as part of residential treatment. Community rehabs are detailed on page 24. Promenade Ward is the inpatient detox ward in Hove. Admissions can be part of a treatment package arranged by the client and their care coordinator. The ward has a multi-disciplinary team, and access to a weekly peer support (SMART) group. Your care coordinator, or the open access service at 11 St George s Place, can refer you for advice and support with screening, vaccination and treatment of blood-borne viruses (BBVs). 5 6

5 Clients experiencing alcohol problems can drop in (Monday to Wednesday 10am-2pm) or be referred to the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT) Community Alcohol Team at 9 The Drive in Hove. CAT offers medically assisted detox, followed by alcohol relapse prevention support (ARRP) over a two week period and/or referrals into counselling. The ARPP (Alcohol Relapse Prevention Programme) provides help, advice and support for anyone who wants to control their alcohol use. Over two weeks, group members look at topics such as managing cravings and triggers, developing helpful relationships and improving self-esteem. Care coordinators can book their clients onto the ARPP, which is run by the SPFT s Community Alcohol Team and CRI. The CRI alcohol Brief Interventions Service offers up to 6 sessions of 40 minutes to non-dependent drinkers, and access to the Community Alcohol Team. SPFT runs the Sussex IOT clinic (injectable opiate treatment) for a small number of clients following specialist assessment. A DRR (Drug Rehabilitation Requirement) order is a Court sentencing option. DRR has activities/programmes on weekdays, and might involve residential rehab, depending on individual needs. Equinox is a street-based alcohol service, working with homeless people. Foundations of Recovery is a programme of recovery support in three stages. The first is called Foundations of Change, which is followed by Foundations of Growth and finally Foundations of Life. These are delivered by CRI, and the programme aims to enable people to look at the many processes involved in their recovery journey, including behaviour change, ways of thinking, reintegration and building recovery communities. There is a strong service user movement in Brighton that clients can join, as well as peer mentor training and volunteering activities. Other self-help activities include Narcotics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. SMART groups are run by people who have successfully completed treatment for drug and/or alcohol use. These Recovery Champions are fully trained and offer their time to others who want to stop using. Other peer-led support groups include GOAL (Get Off Alcohol and Live). They offer a CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) approach, rather than the 12-step model of fellowships like AA. 7 8

6 Auricular (Ear) Acupuncture is available weekly at 11 St George s Place and Whitehawk. Many clients find it reduces anxiety, cravings and helps them relax. Please see details on pages 11 and 16. Your decision to get into treatment Care coordinators can advise you on where to get support with debts, benefits, accommodation, employment and training. Advice is available on diet, care of teeth and gums, and you can be helped to access a dentist. A weekly art group at 11 St George s Place s open access service is an opportunity to spend a couple of hours being creative. No previous experience of painting or art is needed. RISE provides a range of services to support women and people from the LGBT community affected by domestic abuse. Single assessment process Titration clinic Pharmacy script Recovery Plan You and your care coordinator will meet and discuss your needs, which will lead to referral Health Trainers can offer a range of support linked to your recovery.
