Recovery Services Barking & Dagenham Welcome Your guide to drug and alcohol treatment and recovery pathways in Barking and Dagenham
What Next? Barking and Dagenham has a range of services available to anyone who wants to make changes to their drug or alcohol use. Your treatment will start with an assessment of your health and social needs and your strengths, and will include an assessment of your personal qualities, skills, past experiences, and any support you already have in place from family and/or friends. Your recovery worker will meet with you, and together you will draw up a recovery plan. This plan will be based on the goals you want to achieve during and after treatment, and will be used and reviewed regularly to ensure we re on the right track. Steps to Recovery: 1 Your decision to enter treatment 2 Your assessment 3 Medically assisted recovery (titration), if necessary, and allocation of your care co-ordinator 4 Agreeing your Recovery Plan from a range of options Your recovery worker will support you during your time in treatment, and will talk with you about your options. They will make referrals to specific treatments or other services that you might need. 1 2

Recovery Plan Options Art Group Art Group is an abstinence-based aftercare group. The group oers a safe environment where service users can use art to explore their lives with fresh eyes and build their confidence and self-esteem. Art can be a distraction from cravings and can help people gain a new focus and sense of purpose. Service users put on an exhibition of art work on the theme of freedom, in recognition of an idea shared by a service user that we all have the potential to set ourselves free. Foundations of Recovery We believe that recovery is a journey with many stages. Our engagement with people in treatment is part of a process of supporting them to move from where they are to where they want to be, and we use skilful assessment to identify their ambitions and goals and plan their journey out of treatment. For some, even the smallest change can be a huge achievement. The wishes and aims of the service user lie at the heart of service delivery, with intensive support provided to maintain their commitment to change. Our role also involves highlighting risks, challenging behaviour and ensuring the wellbeing of the service user. CRI s strength is in building a recovery focus into all our services. Foundations of Recovery has three stages involving group work. The first stage is Foundations of Change, the second is Foundations of Growth and the third stage is Foundations of Life. Groups of service users (called pods) move through the three stages together. PowerPoint presentations are given at each session and service users bring along a daily journal. We wish to promote a culture of recovery and to get away from a culture of addiction. 5 6
The Recovery Group The Recovery Group is a safe and supportive environment for service users to access treatment. All new and current service users are welcomed to the group and encouraged to actively participate in the session to maximise their recovery. The contents of each session are explored and discussed with all service users at the end of the group and all suggestions are carried through to the following week. At the start of each session the facilitator will remind the group of the importance of rules and confidentiality to ensure the safety of the group. All service users are provided with the opportunity to participate in a 15 minute check-in. This is followed by the main content of the group, which can include: Guest speakers with experience of being abstinent through the support of community and residential rehab The group is planned but does allow for an open forum. The sessions end with a debrief of the aims and outcomes of the session and also allows for service user feedback. Expectations of community and residential treatment Exploring issues or concerns that arise in community or residential treatment Interactive workshop through open discussion or worksheets Creative ways of looking at personal strengths and steps to achieving personal goals 7 7 8
Needle Exchange (NEX) Programme The needle exchange programme has been a great success since CRI took it over about two years ago. The service has been streamlined and is a lot more inclusive and user-friendly, with a single point of contact for all NEX-related issues. The twelve pharmacies involved in the programme are strategically located to provide comprehensive cover across the boroughs of Barking and Dagenham. A map of NEX programme pharmacies has been produced to direct service users to the nearest pharmacy exchange point. Front line pharmacy sta have been trained in drugs awareness and can now provide harm minimisation advice. NEX service users can therefore expect the best customer service when they visit their local pharmacies to use needle exchange services. 9 10

This can make you feel better about life. SMART Recovery (SMART) Is a science-based programme to help people manage their recovery from any type of addictive behaviour. 8 12 Steps A twelve-step program is a set of guiding principles (accepted by members as spiritual principles, based on the approved literature) outlining a course of action for recovery from addiction, compulsion, or other behavioral problems. admitting that one cannot control one s addiction or compulsion; recognizing a higher power that can give strength; examining past errors with the help of a sponsor (experienced member); making amends for these errors; ITEP As well as mapping, ITEP also involves a brief intervention aimed at changing thinking patterns.
