2 Reach Higher Initiative First Lady Michelle Obama
3 Convening Partners University of North Florida and Florida Institute of Education Carolyn Stone is a professor of counselor educator at the University of North Florida. Prior to becoming a counselor educator in 1995, she spent 22 years with Duval County Public Schools in Jacksonville, Florida where she served as a middle school teacher, elementary and high school counselor and supervisor of guidance. She was the 2006 president of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and is in her 14 th year as their ethics chair. She has delivered over 500 workshops in all 50 states and 22 countries. She has authored six books, dozens of journal articles and serves the courts as an expert witness in cases involving school counselors. Cheryl Fountain is the executive director of the Florida Institute of Education, a statewide research center located at the University of North Florida. Fountain has over 30 years of experience in collaborating, designing, implementing and assessing initiatives focused on improving learning outcomes for at-risk children and youth. She served the chancellor of the Florida State University System as assistant for education policy, leading three statewide initiatives involving universities, public schools and school readiness coalitions. She has been PI or CoPI for over 35 externally-funded, practice-focused research projects involving multiple educational agencies at levels from preschool to college. Garcia s passion for education and public service are exemplified in his appointments as Rocky Mountain States Representative for the Department of Housing and Urban Development during the Clinton Administration, president of Colorado State University Pueblo, co-chair of the Governor s P-20 Education Task Force, and chair of the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education. Garcia currently serves as the executive director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education in addition to his role as lieutenant governor. Eric Waldo is executive director of First Lady Michelle Obama s Reach Higher Initiative and wishes to inspire all students in the U. S. to take charge of their future by completing a postsecondary education program. Previously, Waldo was deputy chief of staff at the Department of Education during President Obama s investment of $100 billion in education funding via the Recovery Act. Waldo also helped manage the Department of Defense global K-12 schools system as the co-chair of the Advisory Council for Dependents Education, which advises and oversees Department of Defense schools.

Howard oversees several of Lumina s key strategies to increase attainment of postsecondary degrees and credentials and leads the foundation s efforts to mobilize key actors with a stake in postsecondary attainment. Prior to joining Lumina, Howard served as secretary of higher education in Maryland. As secretary, she led the Maryland Higher Education Commission, oversaw the statewide financial aid program, and advised the governor and legislators on higher education policies and initiatives. Johan E. Uvin is acting assistant secretary for the Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education in the U. S. Department of Education. The Office is responsible for the Department s adult education portfolio, including corrections and reentry education; secondary, postsecondary, and adult career and technical education; and community colleges. Prior to his appointments at the Department, Uvin led the Rhode Island state office that oversees adult education, career and technical education, and GED testing. He also held several leadership positions in education and workforce development in the public and private sectors.

Prior to her appointment, she was president and chief executive officer of Take Stock in Children, a statewide nonprofit organization that has helped over 22,000 low-income and at-risk youth to break the cycle of poverty by completing college. Prior to joining Take Stock in Children, Pumariega served in leadership positions at Miami Dade College, the largest institution of higher education in the nation, including the position as president of the Wolfson Campus. She is known for her work in developing innovative approaches to support student academic progress and success.
7 John A. Delaney is the president of the University of North Florida, overseeing a campus of 16,000 students, 600 faculty and 1,000 staff. In the 12 years of his presidency, the University has been recognized nationally for providing students with small class sizes, individualized attention from faculty and staff, and transformational learning opportunities. Delaney s career in public service includes two terms as mayor of Jacksonville and positions as chief assistant state attorney, prosecutor for Northeast Florida and general counsel for the City of Jacksonville. Stephanie Sprow serves as the deputy director of the First Lady s Reach Higher Initiative at the U.S. Department of Education. In that role, she serves as an advisor to the Office of First Lady Michelle Obama regarding high school and post-secondary completion. Prior to joining the Obama Administration, Stephanie advocated on Capitol Hill for middle grades and high school reform at the Alliance for Excellent Education, and she worked for the chief of staff at the School District of Philadelphia on special projects. She has also worked on a number of local and national political campaigns. Gregory M. Darnieder is senior advisor to the U. S. Secretary of Education on the College Access Initiative, where he serves as a leading voice on the President s 2020 Goal. Darnieder began his career in education as a middle grades teacher in St. Louis, Missouri, and Riverdale, Maryland. He worked for 15 years as the executive director of youth development and college access organizations in Chicago s Cabrini Green Housing Development. Beginning in 1993, he oversaw the Steans Family Foundation s community-focused philanthropic efforts in Chicago s North Lawndale community. In 2003, he established the Department of Postsecondary Education and Student Development at Chicago Public Schools.
