1 Page 1 of 5 Masters of Arts Degree in Counseling and Guidance Program Declaration Statement The Master of Arts degree in Counseling and Guidance at Louisiana Tech University provides two (2) options for students. These are General Counseling, requiring a minimum of 48 semester hours, and School Counseling, which requires a minimum of 33 semester hours. Students must select one option and complete a Plan of Study for that particular option. Students cannot change options without the approval of their advisor, the department head, and the dean of the College of Education. Failure to complete the Plan of Study will result in a hold on registration until the Plan of Study can be processed and filed with the Graduate School. Courses and other requirements are listed on each student s Plan of Study, completed at initial enrollment. Among other requirements, both specialties involve successful completion of a practicum at an approved site and successful completion of a comprehensive examination. The General Counseling option also requires successful completion of internship enrollment over two quarters. A thesis is not required but is an option for exemplary students who anticipate pursuing doctoral training in counseling or closely allied fields. Completing a thesis is additional to all other regular degree requirements and may be expected to increase program length by a minimum of six (6) semester hours. Concentration Options General Counseling The General Counseling option is designed to meet the graduate degree requirement for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC, in Louisiana. Note that Louisiana LPC licensure has other requirements beyond the master s degree, a listing of which may be obtained directly from the Licensure Board. Most states have different requirements for licensure and they may be obtained from the appropriate state source, typically the state licensure board. The American Counseling Association (www.counseling.org) can provide current contact information for all states with licensure or statutory certification. Successfully completing the master s degree in counseling and guidance at Louisiana Tech University does not mean that the degree holder will be licensed or licensable in any other state at any particular time. Louisiana licensure requirements may change from time to time and prior degrees may or may not meet newer requirements without additional academic or other work. School Counseling The Louisiana Tech School Counseling alternative meets the graduate degree requirement for certification as a school counselor in the state of Louisiana, as determined and administered by the Louisiana State Department of Education. Each state has its own requirements for certification in school counseling and reciprocity of certification with other states. If one is interested in school counseling certification outside Louisiana or reciprocity with another state, that state s department of education should be contacted for specific requirements and procedures. Successfully completing the master s degree in School Counseling at Louisiana Tech University does not assure the degree holder will qualify for school counselor certification in any other state at any particular time. Changing Options Students wishing to change from one option to another MUST complete a new application AND Plan of Study for the option they select on or before the 9 th day of the quarter in which they wish to graduate. Students cannot change options without the approval of their advisor, the department head, and the dean of the College of Education. The Plan of Study is not considered complete until all signatures have been obtained. With this in mind, students should not wait until the 9 th day to file a new plan of study with the expectation that it will meet the required deadline. While students can take coursework in the General Option that will assist them in obtaining School Certification from the state, it will not result in an additional degree. Likewise, students in the School option who choose to take coursework that makes them eligible for licensure as a counselor will not receive an additional degree.

2 Page 2 of 5 Professional Orientation Professional counselors work with a wide variety of clients exhibiting a broad range of concerns, problems, and issues. Many, if not most, of these potential counseling topics are personal and some are extremely sensitive, encompassing a wide spectrum of human behaviors, feelings, and thoughts. Many of the topics clients bring to counselors-in-training may be new or challenging to trainee biases and understandings. Thus, counselors-in-training must anticipate and accept encountering diverse populations and concerns. Though the faculty attempts to prepare students for diverse clients and situations, students must be emotionally and intellectually prepared, as well as motivated, to address life experiences outside of their own. Some coursework will entail experiences and activities that encourage self-exploration and personal growth. There are nondepartment referrals, such as the University Counseling Center, to assist students who may need or wish to further explore sensitive topics beyond the scope of coursework. Students are encouraged to explore such avenues if deemed helpful to their adjustment and functioning as counselor-trainees and helping professionals. Program faculty may suggest or recommend options for continued self-awareness and enhanced growth. Personal Issues Louisiana Tech University takes seriously the preparation of professional counselors and informing potential and incoming students clearly and fully about the program, its expectation and requirements, as well as contingencies when requirements are not fulfilled. Research is clear that many factors determine counselor effectiveness. One important consideration is the personality and commitment of the trainee. Hence, counselors-in-training must be highly motivated and display maturity, integrity, flexibility, and sound ethical judgment when performing all professional roles and functions. Evidence shows that counseling can be for better or worse and the functioning of the counselor is a critical determinant of counseling outcome. Because successful counseling necessitates working with deeply personal human issues on an intense and ongoing basis, it is essential that counselors-in-training monitor their own sensitivities and unresolved or on-going personal issues. Counselor issues may interfere with developing and maintaining appropriately helpful client relationships. If this is determined to be the case by course instructors, site or university supervisors, or others, the identified counselor(s)-in-training will be advised of potential means of remediating the situation or personal issues. These options may include, but are not limited tom any of the following: being required to seek and successfully complete personal counseling, taking additional course work, receiving a lowered or failing course grade, removal from a course, and removal from the program. In the event of such actions, the student will always be afforded due process as specified by Louisiana Tech University. The highest level of ethical and professional behavior is expected and required of all counselor trainees, at all times. Violations will be brought before the Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Department Professional Standards Committee for investigation and action. Options available to the committee when violations are substantiated include but are not limited to removal from the course and program. Illegal behaviors will be addressed in accordance with university rules and regulations and relevant local, state, and national lows. Due process in all instances will be afforded trainees consistent and in accordance with the rules and regulations of Louisiana Tech University. The official graduate student procedure for due process is found in the University Catalog and is available from the Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Department, posted on department and program bulletin boards, and at other locations, such as the College of Education Graduate Office. Feedback to students may be oral, taped, or written. In situations in which evaluations call for significant student improvement, specific actions or remediation may be requested of the student. Consequences of successful and unsuccessful remediation will also be outlined to the student. As always, due process will be afforded all students who may decide to contest and evaluation.

4 Page 4 of 5 Employment opportunities and prospects As with most human service professions employment opportunities are extremely diverse and vary by geographical and other variables. While jobs may be somewhat scarce in small rural communities, they are more plentiful in urban and suburban settings. Graduates with flexibility in pursing initial postgraduate employment are most successful. Graduates have been effective in securing employment in most school and mental health settings, from institutions to agencies, both private and public. Admission The formula for admission is: (Undergraduate Grade Point Average X 200) + Graduate Record Exam (GRE) Verbal + Quantitative sections. A total of 1300 points is needed for consideration for unconditional admission into the Counseling and Guidance Program. Students will not be admitted to the program until official GRE scores and official transcripts are in the possession of the College of Education Graduate Studies office. A maximum of nine (9) semester hours completed while in Life Long Learning may be applied toward the graduate degree. Students must also have completed 12 undergraduate semester hours in psychology (including introductory psychology and statistics) before (or immediately upon) enrolling in the program. A statement of purpose and three letters of reference attesting to the student s fitness for work as a counselor or school counselor also are required. Matriculated students are assigned an advisor who will assist in developing the Plan of Study. A maximum of nine (9) hours may be transferred from another university toward the counseling degree with the approval of the advisor, Department Head, Director of Graduate Studies, and the Dean of the College of Education. Practicum and internship courses will not be counted for transfer credit. No deviations may be made from the Plan of Study without prior official approval. *Please note: If a student s graduate GPA drops below 3.0, or if they make 2 Cs in the program, they will be dropped from the program. Program Completion Due to the flexible admissions schedule and the option to proceed at ones own pace, it may be necessary to take specific courses at another campus (Ruston/Barksdale) to complete the program in a timely manner. Signature Page Students will sign and date the following Signature Page, verifying they have received, read, understood, and accepted this Declaration Statement. The Signature Page must be turned in at the College of Education Graduate Office. A copy of the Signature Page will be placed in the student s file and must be on-file prior to the next registration.
