2 PART I: GENERAL INFORMATION DESCRIPTION OF TOWN - SHORT HISTORY AND LOCATION Poznań is situated halfway between Warsaw and Berlin, and is one of the biggest and oldest cities in Poland. Having a population of 0.6 million, Poznań is the main city of Wielkopolska, the wealthiest and the most developed region of Poland with its prosperous agriculture, trade, industry, as well as education, sport and rich tradition. Poznań is known for its contribution into creation of Polish nation. Beginning as a fortified village in 10 th century, Poznań soon became the capital of Poland and a residence of first Polish Kings. The town flourished as a European trade centre during 15 th and 16 th centuries, but later its prosperity declined due to fires and wars. Poznań prospered again between two world wars. Devastated during World War II, it was rebuilt after 1945 and became one of the most important industrial and cultural centers in Poland. Poznań s historical monuments are proof of its fascinating history. Ostrów Tumski, the oldest part of the town, built in the 10th and 11th centuries, along with the cathedral, is the medieval cradle of the Polish state and the residence of the first rulers of Poland. The historical Old Town, located in the centre of the city, has preserved the medieval city plan with a grid of perpendicular streets leading to the enchanting Stary Rynek (Old Market) where, among the historical old merchant houses, a pearl of the Polish renaissance dominates the Town Hall. Modern Poznań is a vibrant, lively metropolis. Business, culture and entertainment shopping malls, theatres, concert halls, galleries, museums and cinemas that always offer a lot of events and attractions all can be found here. Among the most important and best known are the Poznań International Trade Fair, the Malta International Theatre Festival, at which as many as a hundred theatre groups perform and finally the International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition. For nature lovers, Poznań offers two zoological gardens, a botanical garden, an arboretum and a palm house. The best place to practise sport is the 12-hectare Sports and Recreation Centre on the shores of Malta Lake. Open all-year-round, it is the home to the Canoeing World Cup and European Canoeing Championships. Above all, though, it is Poznań s large, and ever-increasing scientific and academic centres that contribute to the rapid and intensive development of the city, bringing it ever-greater renown. Nowadays, 140 thousand students attend 22 public and private higher education schools, the largest of which is Adam Mickiewicz University. - MAIN LOCAL/CULTURAL EVENTS It would be hard to count all major cultural and local events taking place in Poznań, as they are many, but it is certainly worth naming some of the most important ones. 1.The International Poznań Fairs are cyclical events aimed at promoting products and services offered by various branches of the economy. The Fairs attract exhibitors and investors from all over the world. 2. The Malta Theatrical Festival is devoted to Polish and foreign outdoor and street theatre and is 2

3 accompanied by unconventional concerts and other musical performances. 3. The International H. Wieniawski Violin Competition is a prestigious competition open to young violinists, attracting the most promising virtuosos from all over the world. 4. The International Modern Dance Workshops one of the biggest events of this type in Europe. In the course of the open dance workshops participants have an opportunity to acquaint themselves with various modern dance techniques, such as krumping or latino jazz. 5. The Hoffman Festival is an event devoted not only to the propagation of opera music. It also aims at searching for expressions of understanding and co-operation in the history of Polish and German culture and arts. 6. The persona grata Early Music festival aims at popularising the slightly forgotten music of past centuries. Music lovers get a chance to listen to interesting compositions performed by the best Polish and foreign musicians. 7. The International verba sacra Festival is devoted to discovering the beauty of biblical texts and the art of their reading. Biblical texts are interpreted by leading Polish actors. 8. The International off cinema Film Festival Provides an opportunity for Polish and foreign feature films, documentaries and animations made outside the mainstream cinematography to be shown to a wider audience. 9. The International Maski Theatrical Festival is an event during which spectators can see a number of plays staged by Polish and foreign alternative theatres. 10. The International universitas cantat Festival of University Choirs is a venue for exchanging experiences and presenting the achievements of choirs from Polish and foreign academic centres. 11. The Ale kino! Film Festival presents films for children and young people, whose makers eschew cultural and commercial stereotypes. 12. The International tour film Festival is devoted to the presentation of unusual places and distant cultures recorded on film. 13. The National Kon-Teksty Festival of Polish Contemporary Arts for Children and Young People popularises contemporary drama among the youngest theatre lovers. 14. The National O.B.O.R.A. Cabaret Songs Festival is devoted to popularising the cabaret art. 15. The Poznań Marathon is the largest sporting event of this type in Poland. it is accompanied by races popularising less common form of movement (e.g. a rollerblades marathon). 16. The Pyrlandia Days are a celebration of the traditional dishes made from potatoes, so popular among the inhabitants of Poznań. ( pyra is the regional word for potato). Tastings of the specialities of Poznań cuisine are accompanied by concerts and numerous competitions. 4 - HOW TO REACH TOWN (LINKS FROM THE NEAREST AIRPORT, TRAIN OR COACH STATIONS) Poznań can be conveniently reached by plane, train or coach. Thanks to its Ławica Airport, Poznań offers air connections to the most important cities of Europe. Detailed flight timetable to and from Poznań can be found at the website of the Airport. You can reach the city centre from the airport by public transport (bus lines 48, 59, L, 242) or taxi. The bus timetable can be found at the website of the Municipal Public Transport Company (Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Komunikacji). If there are no direct flights from your town to Poznań, you can use airports in other cities with convenient railway links to Poznań, e.g. Wrocław and Warsaw. Trains bound for Poznań leave both these cities almost every hour. The journey from Wrocław to Poznań takes 2.5 hours and from Warsaw 3 hours. You can plan your rail trip using the website of the Polish Railways (Polskie Koleje Państwowe - PKP). You can also reach Poznań directly by rail. List of cities with international coach links to Poznań: - TRANSPORT IN TOWN (BRIEF INFORMATION ON THE MAIN MEANS OF TRANSPORT AVAILABLE) Public transport is the most convenient way of moving about in Poznań. Buses and trams reach all parts of the city. Travelling in Poznań is made easier thanks to the Rapid Tram, which cuts the travel time between Poznan s outskirts and the city centre to just 15 minutes. Rapid transit is also possible by express buses. Night buses run between p.m. and 5.00 a.m. (fares are the same as during the day). It pays to buy a transit card (komkarta) which allows holders to purchase cheap monthly travel cards valid on all trains and buses (excluding express buses, where the fare is more expensive). Students under the age of 26 holding a student card are entitled to a 50% discount on public transport fares. There are also many taxi firms in Poznań. The driver is obligated to issue a cash register receipt confirming the fare amount. Poznań is a driver-friendly city. Therefore, you may also move about in your own car. In the city centre there are parking zones where parking attracts a charge. There is also an extensive network of secure paid car parks. You may also hire a car or a bike in Poznań. 4

5 Useful links: Car rental in Poznań: Taxis in Poznań: Bike hire in Poznań: SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANISING INSTITUTION The AMU School of Polish Language and Culture for Foreign Students was established in 1985 as an extension of the Institute of Polish Philology, and has more than 20 years of experience in teaching Polish as a foreign language. Academic teachers, employees of the Institute of Polish Philology, conduct the classes. Most of the teachers are also examiners and members of the ZAZIE group by the State Commission for the Certification of Proficiency in Polish as a Foreign Language commissioned by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Three major factors contribute to the high level of education in the School of Polish Language and Culture for Foreign Students. Firstly, the teaching programme meets the Commission s recommendations. Secondly, we have long-standing experience in teaching Polish as a foreign language. Finally, the teachers are well-qualified to deal with students from different countries and cultures. Every member of the staff speaks at least one foreign language: English, German, French or Russian. Classes take place in a beautiful historical building, Collegium Maius, which is situated in the city centre beside the Stanisław Moniuszko Grand Theatre and the Zamek Culture Centre. The convenient localization of Collegium Maius enables students to get to the School by any means of public transport while at the same time encouraging them to sample the city s rich cultural offering, the restaurants, coffee shops, clubs and pubs. The courses run by the School, whose main purpose is to teach and to promote Polish language and culture, are an excellent opportunity to exchange different experiences and opinions, to meet interesting people and make friends among the students. In the academic year 2012/2013 more than 400 people from over 30 countries participated in different courses conducted by the School of Polish Language and Culture for Foreign Students at AMU and there are more and more students every year wanting to live the adventure of a lifetime. Our website is: ACCOMMODATION - SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMMODATION OFFERED (HOTEL, APARTMENTS, STUDENT HALLS, OTHERS; IF THERE ARE COOKING FACILITIES) AND ON THE RENT TO BE PAID PER WEEK We offer our students accommodation at the Zbyszko dormitory situated at 80 Piątkowska st., in single and double rooms. Two rooms share a bathroom. The rooms come with a change of bed linen, towels and a refrigerator. On every floor there is a public phone. Student may use kitchens located at every floor of the dormitory. Total accommodation costs (4 weeks) per person are as follows: - single room PLN 500 (about 125 ), 5

6 - double room PLN 400 (about 100 ) (PLN Polish zloty; 1 = ca 4 PLN). MEALS - SHORT DESCRIPTION ON THE SERVICES OFFERED (UNIVERSITY CANTEENS, RESTAURANTS, BARS, OTHERS) We also offer our students full board at the student canteen (between Monday and Friday). If necessary, students may prepare their breakfasts and suppers at the dormitory s kitchens. On weekends we suggest eating in restaurants. During field trips we also recommend dining out. RECEPTION OF STUDENTS - MEETING POINT (PLACE, DATE AND TIME OF FIRST MEETING - FOR EACH COURSE WHERE DIFFERENT) On 25 August 2013, at 6:00 p.m. there will be a meeting of all the participants with their tutor. The meeting will be held at the ground floor in Zbyszko dormitory, 80 Piątkowska St. On 26 August 2013, they will be officially welcomed at the Adam Mickiewicz University by the representatives of the University, the Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology and the head of the School of Polish Language and Culture for Foreign Students. EXTRA MURAL ACTIVITIES - SITE VISITS We offer students a number of guided sightseeing tours of Poznań and the surrounding areas. These trips will allow them to become acquainted with the history and culture of Poland, and, above all, with the cultural heritage of our region. We have planned the following tours: A) The Piast Route (Gniezno, Biskupin, Ostrów Lednicki), highlighting the establishment and development of the Polish state and contribution to this process made by the region of Wielkopolska; B) to the Wielkopolski National Park, which protects various forms of post-glacial landscape with unique flora and fauna. There is also a number of historical churches and manor houses situated within the limits of the Park; C) to Puszczykowo, (The Museum of Arkady Fiedler, a famous writer and traveler who lived in Puszczykowo) walks in Poznań (Old Town, Town Hall, Fara Church, Przemysław s Hill, Ostrów Tumski, Poznań Citadel) and visits at the local museums (National Museum, Museum of the City of Poznań, Museum of Musical instruments, Museum of the Poznań Uprising June 1956) bringing closer the history and culture of our town. - SPORTS FACILITIES (SWIMMING, TENNIS, GYMNASIUM; OPENING DAYS AND AVAILABLE INFORMATION) Poznań has a well-developed sports infrastructure and offers many attractions to those who enjoy active recreation. At most sports facilities students under the age of 26 holding student cards (also international cards) are entitled to buy tickets at discounted prices (up to 50% off). Swimming pools In Poznań there are a number of indoor and open swimming pools (open in the summer). Here is a list of these 6

The capital city of Wielkopolska hosts a dozen or so theatres, including some well-known far outside the borders of our country, such as The Polish Theatre of dance. Those interested in classical and avant-garde theatre, musicals and opera will be happy to have stayed in Poznań. 7

9 PART II: COURSE(S) DESCRIPTION COURSE NO: 1 AND 2 LEVEL: I: Beginner courses (A1 and A2 levels) FROM... PERIOD: TO... LANGUAGE COMPONENT - SHORT DESCRIPTION OF LANGUAGE COMPONENT: OBJECTIVES AND TEACHING METHODS The objective of the courses is the acquisition (beginner levels: A1 and A2) of basic language skills (speaking, comprehension of spoken word, reading, writing). Special emphasis will be placed on expanding the communication competencies of the students. To this end they will be made familiar with new vocabulary, taught the correct pronunciation and use of grammar forms corresponding to their existing knowledge in these areas. After completing the course the beginners should be able to communicate in everyday situations (shopping, dealing with officials, finding the way, travelling by rail, coach and air), including providing information concerning them. They should also understand basic spoken and written information. Students will use modern textbooks and materials prepared by the tutors. Our chosen teaching method is based on communication with an element of grammar. - SUBJECT-SPECIFIC LANGUAGE ELEMENTS YES NO (e.g. special modules for students in particular disciplines) IF YES, SPECIFY: Although we have not planned any discipline-specific language tuition, if necessary, tutors will endeavour to ensure that the classes (especially conversation classes aimed at developing lexical skills) are focused on teaching the language used in a specific field which is of interest to the students. - DURATION TOTAL NUMBER OF CLASSES 116 h. The final grade will depend also on the attendance record and active participation in classes. The final test will cover all the skills taught during the course (communication and vocabulary, grammar, reading and spoken word comprehension, creation of written text). The final examination will be written. After the successful completion of the course, students obtain 5 ECTS credits. 9

Lectures will cover Poland s history, the history of Polish film, music and literature. In the course of the workshops students will have an opportunity to get acquainted with Polish folk dances and take part in theatre workshops. Culture-related information will also constitute an important element of the tutorials, although we are not going to hold separate classes to handle these matters.
