2 New IAA card manual Foreword Dear friends, The discussion about new design and implementation of IAA card had started years ago. As we all know, IAA card should serve its holder to enter museums, galleries and cultural institutions all over world for free entrance or at least at discount from entrance fees and became a tool for lifelong education of artists. Unfortunately there is no guide for artists, no list of institutions which accept the card or not and the card does not have the strength and seriousness that it should have and that we all wish for it. Except lack of information from each country and no guide with galleries, there were long discussions about visual of IAA card that slowed down the whole process. In 2010 Executive Committee of IAA International established unified visual for all National Committees and template of card with new rules were sent out to artists organizations. In 2011 all National Committees had to convert to new system of producing of IAA cards. In October 2011 Office of IAA Europe prepared short manual about IAA card in Slovakia informing about implementing card in our country, starting from technical details through graphic designing to advices how to push the card through cultural institutions where the most important role played negotiations with political authorities and official representatives of cultural institutions. We can say that our efforts here at Slovakia bore fruits: we produce IAA card according to approved template, we are able to do it in our office while artist waits or visits our gallery and last but not least, we can recommend him/her 15 institutions in Slovakia which accepts the card by now. We have very positive feedback not only by Slovak artists, but also from colleagues from abroad (e.g. Anders Lidén: Your version of the card is the best I have seen.) we thank for all positive reactions. As many questions concerning IAA card are still coming from several countries, as well as because we have no official list of institutions accepting IAA card from any other country yet, we would like to share with you our experiences. We have decided to prepare this guide which explains step by step whole procedure and tries to answer frequently asked questions to IAA card. We hope it will facilitate the process of its publishing and allow expansion of card to as many countries as possible. And of course we welcome other positive experiences from other countries which could help to improve and accelerate process of implementation and compliance of IAA card. 3 1. Basic info New IAA card design was first announced at 7 th General Assembly of IAA Europe in October 2010 in Bratislava, when Anders Lidén (Coordinator of IAA for Europe, Sweden) informed present delegates about new rules: IAA ID cards update (valid from January 1, 2011) Anders Lidén (Sweden) showed final version of IAA ID card design back and front side and explained: - In past the cards were printed by office in Paris, this is not possible anymore - In future this should be a responsibility of National Committees to print the ID cards - Both sites of card must follow the same standard national site and international site too, one card one design - The way of production and the quality of printing is up to National Committees according to their possibilities (financial and others) Grete Marstein (Norway) added that it should depend on national financial and technical possibilities, but signs and colors should be the same. All templates will come from international office. The card has a wallet size and should be made in plastic this parameter should be preserved by all members. Old version: New version:

Technical Details We started with preparing of IAA card production in first months of the year It took a little time to find the best technology for printing plastic cards according to IAA template. First we started to produce paper, cold laminated cards but we were not satisfied with the result so we decided to invest to plastic cards printer. Paper cool-laminated cards are better for smaller associations with less members - cards are printed on paper and laminated with self-laminate foil (size of credit card). Advantage: cheap, very easy to produce (BubbleJet or Laser personal printer). Evolis Pebble printer for plastic cards Disadvantage: very easy to falsify, therefore, their credibility can be questioned. Nowadays we have in our office printer for plastic cards Evolis Pebble printer for single-sided badges, we print only front side with photography, name and signature, whole back side and most of the front side are pre-printed from our supplier - this saves not only lot of money for cartridges but also guarantees higher quality of print. Advantage: practical and professional look, credibility, no doubt about their authenticity (difficult to falsify). Disadvantage: more expensive, especially for small associations (need for a fundamental investment in technology). Cartridge Pre-printed cards

Costs and safety Paper card - approximate price calculation - print of both sides, color A4 (about 10 cards) - 0,50 EUR - self-laminate foil (100 pcs pack) - 17 EUR - costs per piece are about 0,22 Plastic card - approximate price calculation - printing / processing of one card is between 5 (preprinted) - 15 minutes (blank card) - printer Evolis Pebble VAT included (price of printer bought in Slovakia, according to information from Turkey and Cyprus, price may be lower in other countries about 500 ) - PVC cards / 100 pcs (blank) - 16,20 - YMCKO R3011 colorful tape - 52 (prints about 50 pcs both sides cards) - PVC cards/1 000 pcs (preprinted cards, name, photo and signature to add only) (this price depend on higher quantity in one order) - costs per a piece (without a fundamental investment in technology): about 1,16 (print on blank card) about 1,13 (preprinted card = better quality, colors, faster and easier produce) Safety we recommend to use holographic sticker (with actual year of validity)

Design of card Front side National side For each National Committee the letterhead of card remains the same (as much as possible) but can differ in details Each National Committee updates (scan and insert in Photoshop or CorelDraw) its: - Data and logo (Slovak Union of Visual Arts in example below) - Current photo of holder - Signature - Name of holder and country - Year of validity (we use holographic stickers for every year instead of printing new cards) Current photo of holder Year of validity National Committee data and logo Signature of holder Back side - International side same for each National Committee Blue color: 50% cyan. No changes in color or text are allowed. We announced the possibility of obtaining the card in the moment we were ready to print it continuously or even while the applicant waits for it. We forwarded information via s to our members. The greatest interest we noticed before summer, when people travel abroad.

Implementing the card After solving the technical issues of printing new cards we have started the process of promotion these cards with following goals: - to improve acceptance of new IAA cards in museums and galleries in Slovakia - to prepare a list of institutions where the IAA card is accepted in Slovakia We started communication and negotiations with our Ministry of Culture at first. We sent them request for support (appendix 1) including letter of President of IAA explaining the meaning and strength of card in other countries worldwide (appendix 2) and visual of new card as well with description that: - international back side have to be always the same - design of national front side can varied but always there have to be: - name of the country and NC - name, photo and signature of holder - year of validity We described good examples from other countries (Louvre, Musée d Orsay or Orangerie at Paris, Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin, Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique at Brussels and other). We stressed that Slovak artists are treated in many museum abroad better that in their home country and that acceptance of this international cards can help to positive visibility of Slovakia too. After having no official answer for two months, President of SUVA Pavol Kral consulted the issue with State secretary of Ministry of Culture personally and met also with Minister of Culture: explained the problem and asked him for support. Minister of Culture expressed understanding and promised to support our effort. In short time we received a letter with positive reply from Ministry of Culture informing that: - Ministry of Culture contacted in this case selected institutions which are in its establishing competence and found out galleries and museums in Slovakia really do not accept this card. - Whereas the Ministry of Culture considers the acceptance of international IAA cards to be beneficial for professional education of artists, it will recommend to institutions in its establishing competence to include this card to the system of discounts given to the public. - Along this process Ministry of Culture recommended to Slovak Union of Visual Arts to contact management and head officers of these institutions to negotiate the terms and conditions of IAA card use. - Other institutions, which are in establishing competence of small cities, towns or territorial units are outside the competence of Ministry of Culture and it has no influence on their decision. Ministry of Culture recommends contact directly the management of these institutions and negotiate with them. Ministry of Culture will support our efforts with letter to chairmen of selfgovernment regions asking them to meet our request. We continued in this process through contacting the management of these institutions and negotiate with them (appendix 3). It took some time undoubtedly but we succeed and as the result of our aim we have published on web site of IAA Europe - list of institutions where the IAA cards are accepted in Slovakia. Our recommendation: to start negotiations as high as possible and contact as many museums and galleries as possible.

8 7. List of institutions At the beginning of 2012 we can offer to our members as well as to foreign visitors holders of IAA cards following list of institutions which accept IAA card in Slovakia: 1. Galéria mesta Bratislavy Pálffyho palác (Municipal gallery of Bratislava Palffy s palace) We sent thank you letter with attached self- adhesive sticker of front and back side of IAA card in actual size to all galleries which confirmed acceptation of IAA card for they can mark their cash desks and help the personnel to recognize the card. 9 We know that many important institutions in Europe accept the card (Louvre, Musée d'orsay, Rodin Museum, Musée de l'orangerie, Martin-Gropius Bau and other), but this information is based only on our experiences, there is no official confirmation from those galleries. We received experiences only from SUVA members (selection below), any other experiences are welcome and will help us: I saved almost 100 Euros in my trip to Paris, IAA card allowed me for free entry in Louvre, Rodin museum, d Orsay, Orangerie, Muséum national d'histoire naturelle, Versailles... in Louvre, I used special entry and avoided hours of waiting in queues at main entrance we were in Stuttgart with association of sculptors and get 30% discount on tickets in state gallery... situation is getting better with IAA cards in castle of Carcassonne IAA card was accepted automatically visiting city of Zadar (antique basilica with exhibition of contemporary sculptures) I tried to use IAA card... they did not know it, but accepted after explanation... I visited city of Cesky Krumlov listed in UNESCO, but nobody knew IAA card in Egon Schiele Art Center IAA Card - Turkey's suggestions UPSD (by Bedri Baykam) In Turkey, we did some important moves about the IAA card that we feel can also be very helpful 1. We push of course the use of the card in different museums and art fairs and try to have it accepted by all main venues. 2. We have started establishing a list of commercial stores that give a discount to IAA card holders, for the purchase of art supplies, books and even all sort of shops (clothes, theaters, etc.). We go talk to those stores and explain them IAA and the card and ask for a discount, average 10% is given. (Sometimes it can go up to 15% or go down to 5%, 10% is the average.) If all National Committees start doing this, it will add a lot to the importance of the card and will make it worth while to carry it at all means. So an artist traveling to France or Turkey will have the same discounts, no matter which country he is from. It will add to the prestige of the card, the National Committee and the IAA. 3. We are starting next month the payment of IAA cards yearly dues by credit card on line. We are doing the talks with the bank, and we will finalize soon. We have many members who have accumulated debts and those who do not have time to go to the bank. So the credit cards gives installments and makes it very easy to pay online. So we also suggest the proposal to use credit cards for payments of yearly fees for each member artist. The countries that can use it will gain time, money and practicality. These are some of our IAA Card concrete suggestions to IAA Europe, which we will also send to the World IAA.

10 9. Summary FAQ Under what conditions can I get the card? Being a professional visual artist allows you to apply for IAA card: a/ if you are member of organization associating professional visual artists usually you should prove that you are member with fees paid for the current year b/ if you are not member of organization associating professional visual artists you should prove that you have a professional degree in fine arts (unless you are well respected person in the visual arts) It is necessary to fill an application with your personal data, name, address, country, contacts and signature. Photography in printed or electronic form is a must (you will get it back after scanning). Where can I get the card? Only National Committees of IAA Europe with paid fees are allowed to issue IAA cards. For list of National Committees of European country please check website of IAA Europe (bookmark members). How does the card look like, is there any graphic I should follow? IAA card has unified design with its front side with regional character working as national card and back side with uniform design for all countries in blue color. Office of IAA Europe provides graphic template which is available upon request for other National Committees and has to be updated according to regional differences. How long is the card valid? IAA card is valid from date of issue until end of calendar year. After expiration card (or short before the date of expiration beginning from about half of November) will be prolonged for next year at National Committee office in your country. What is practical use of this card? IAA card card of professional visual artist - allows you to enter many state museums and galleries all around the world for free or with discount on entrance fee.

Those cards issued in the name of IAA / AIAP explicitly by Slovak Union of Visual Arts (SUVA), are recognized in galleries and museums worldwide, provides free access for professional artists - Slovak including - are accepted by museums and art institutions around the world (Louvre, Musée d Orsay, Orangerie in Paris, Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin, Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique in Brusel) and many others. International identity cards participate in professional artistic research and lifetime education facilitating entry to artists world's most important collections. We hope that Slovakia will not stay even in this international activity aside. We would like to ask you for support and issue an instruction for cultural institutions in the Ministry of Culture, to accept cards in Slovakia as well as similar institutions abroad. Also we would appreciate to have list of Slovak cultural institutions that are accepting free entry to IAA/AIAP cards holders - to publish on website of SUVA and other websites of international organizations of IAA/AIAP and IAA Europe. Admittedly, this would help to the improvement of not only art but also creating a positive image of Slovakia abroad. The International Association of Art IAA, has been affiliated to UNESCO as a non-governmental organization (NGO) since 1954 and is universally recognized as the only international professional association in the field of visual arts. The members are national associations of artists in the fields of painting, sculpture, printmaking and other forms of creative work in the visual arts. The IAA card, which provides free access and professional courtesy to IAA members, is recognized and accepted by museums and art institutions around the world and is an important tool for the artists in their professional artistic research. These institutions, large or small, recognize the benefit they gain from enabling the artists, IAA members, in the same way as art critics and art journalists, to visit exhibitions, art events and collections of art, to carry on their research, to make studies and to gain inspiration. We ask you kindly to enforce the acceptance of the professional visual artist card and inform your organization and staff about this new design. Naturally there will be a short period where both old and new cards will exist side by side.
