2 Purpose The purpose of this presentation is to help you understand transfer options beyond the UC and CSU systems Please use this presentation as a starting point for your private university and/or out-of-state university exploration, but come by the Transfer Center to learn more from one of our helpful peer mentors Please always visit the admissions website for the university you wish to transfer to for the most up to date information

3 Overview Applying to transfer to a private or out-of-state colleges is different than applying to a CSU or UC A private university can be out-of-state, but not all out-of-state universities are private, some are public Please remember that informed and detailed planning can help you be eligible to apply as a transfer student to any university whether it be private, out-of-state, CSU and/or UC campuses For the most up to date information please visit the university s website as soon as possible as the minimum requirements for transfer vary from college to college, and from major to major Certain private universities and out-of-state colleges accept the CSU GE Breath or IGETC Check with each individual college or university for the application filing period and process

4 Admissions requirements for out-ofstate and private universities Transfer unit requirements Typically at least 60 units are necessary to transfer, but it varies from university to university Some universities will let you transfer with as low as 30 units Selectivity Out-of-state and private universities have varying levels of selectivity, some are highly selective, give preference to in-state applicants and others can be less competitive Application Tuition Many private universities use the Common Application ( It is always recommended to visit the admissions website of out-of-state and private universities to find out how to apply and specific deadlines Most out-of-state public universities will charge you a non-resident tuition rate Most private universities offer the same tuition rate for in-state or out-of-state students Financial aid is available at either type of university for those that qualify

5 Private Universities in California There are over 70 private/independent universities in California Some of these universities are large and offer both undergraduate and graduate programs Other universities are small and offer students a more personalized campus community Private universities can also be religious such as Loyola Marymount University or offer a specialty such as California Art Center Many California private universities are part of the AICCU, an association of independent (non-public) universities Visit the AICCU website to help you get familiar with your options:

9 The Common Application (referred to as the Common App) is an online application system that can be used to apply to several private universities both in and outside of California To find out if the university you are considering accepts the Common App, please visit: /AllMembers

10 Snapshot of Private University: ELAC to Loyola Marymount University Students with 30 or more transferable semester units are required to submit: 1) Common Application and LMU Supplement 2) Official Transcripts from ALL Colleges Attended Optional: 3) Letters of Recommendation (Recommended) 4) Counselor s Report 5) Mid- Term Report A maximum of 60 semester hours may be transferred from a community college Courses with grades below C (2.0) do not transfer to LMU A snapshot of LMU s articulation agreement can be found on the next slide where you can see which courses are transferrable For more information visit:

12 Out-of-state universities Out-of-state universities establish their own admission application criteria and application processes It is important that you visit their websites to get familiar with requirements and deadlines Public out-of-state universities might have a higher tuition rate for CA residents If you are planning to go out-of-state for college, whether a private or public college, you should plan financially for additional expenses such as housing and travel

13 Snapshot of Out of State University: ELAC to Arizona State University Online application ASU accepts college-level (not remedial) courses in which you have earned a grade of C or better from regionally accredited colleges and universities A snapshot of the ASU Transfer Credit Guide can be found on the next slide where you can see which courses are transferrable A maximum of 64 semester hours of credit will be accepted as lower-division credit, with the exception of some special programs The ASU college of your major determines how transfer courses fulfill the degree requirements of your ASU major For more information visit:

15 Tips for Transfer Complete English and Math requirements as early as possible Whenever possible, focus on completing both minimum admission requirements and major preparation course work Complete all courses by end of the semester before you transfer Apply to more than one university with a mix of selectivity Visit the campuses Meet with an Admissions Officer and ELAC Counselor to ensure proper educational planning that will lead to successful transfer beyond preparing for UC and/or CSU transfer
