4 Apprenticeship Programs Programs are expanding to meet the shortage of technically skilled personnel State of California Department of Industrial Relations offers programs which include: Paid employment while in training for a career, with salary increases as proficiency levels rise Classroom instruction in subjects related to the occupation Opportunities to become uniquely qualified, with state-issued credentials for details on specific apprenticeship programs

5 Career & Technical Schools Specialty programs Areas of programs include automotive, aviation & aircraft, construction, electrician, industrial tech, plumbing, computer/web Range from a few months to a few years to complete program Preparation for the workforce Vary in price

6 Community College Does not require a-g completion or SAT/ACT Many Program Options, on campus and online Certificate Programs 2-year Associate Degrees Can finish program in 2 years then work, or transfer to 4-year university. Nearly 1/3 of UC admits are transfers from CA community colleges. 4-year Bachelor Degree pilot programs, affordable options Up and running fall 2016 or 2017 Mira Costa College Bio-manufacturing Mesa College Health Information Management Not all cc s offer same programs or opportunities. Research to determine your options. - San Diego & Imperial Counties Regional Consortium - San Diego Community College District A few campuses in SD County are Palomar, Mesa, Miramar, City, MiraCosta, Grossmont Community College Night: Feb. 23 rd, 6-8 pm, Mt. Carmel HS Spring 12 th grade: Open House & Registration Placement tests in Math & English, allows for early acceptance & registration! Keep up rigor in 12 th!

IGETC pattern of study CSU & UC agreement w/california community colleges Not required and does not guarantee admission, however may improve chances for admission Some majors have lower-division major prerequisites which help insure student s competitiveness Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) Agreement with specific UC/CSU campuses UC campuses not accepting TAG: UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD Check w/4-year university to verify which community colleges are part of their transfer program Must meet with community college counselor & follow guidelines of agreement Additional programs available Example: RN-BSN degree program with Palomar College & Point Loma Nazarene University

12 UC/CSU application When completing the application enter all PUSD coursework as semester courses DNHS trimester courses are equivalent to a semester course Coursework & grades are self-reported Use your transcript when reporting coursework completed on applications Offers of admission are provisional & subject to verification based on official transcript sent after graduation. Accuracy in reporting is crucial! Offer of admission is conditional based on student earning C s or better senior year, GPA not falling lower than reported and student completing all courses reported as in progress for 12 th grade. It is essential that senior year courses are completed successfully!! State ID# is on your DNHS transcript Before submitting complete application, print it, you and your parent/guardian review entire application carefully.

16 CSU - Eligibility Index SAT: (GPA* x 800) + (SAT Critical Reading + Math Score) ACT: (GPA* x 200) + (10 x ACT composite**) *All approved college prep "a-g" courses 10 th - 12th **Do not include the SAT/ACT writing scores California residents must have a minimum index of: 2900 using SAT scores 694 using ACT scores After computing eligibility index, go to each CSU college website & to see their average index.

18 UC Application Personal Statement UC Personal Statement 2 prompts must address both 1000 words total or less, minimum 250 words/prompt UC recommends one statement approximately 750 words and the other 250 words Do not go over 1000 words total Think of this as an interview, opportunity to tell them about who you are and what you have done. Admissions is concerned with content and learning more about the applicant. Include concrete examples. Have others read over your essays Paste your responses in plain text onto application UC Personal Statement resources on DNHS Counseling website, under Senior News tab

19 Private Colleges/Universities Check with each school, many require the following; Application, including one or more essays Official transcript Secondary School Report from counselor, may include letter of recommendation from counselor and 1-2 teachers. SAT Reasoning or ACT with Writing SAT Subject tests Deadline to request School Report/Letter of Recommendation All letter of rec forms must be to counselor min. 4 school weeks before college application deadline date. Jan. 1 st application deadline = Nov. 13 th deadline to get everything to counselor. Give teachers minimum 4 school weeks. UC/CSU admissions DO NOT require school report/letter of rec Common Application Submission ~ Nov Feb

20 Out-of-State Schools Hundreds of great choices Check out WUE: Western Undergraduate Exchange program for discounted out-of-state tuition Financial assistance available Higher acceptance rate Many with lower average GPA & test scores

21 Letter of Recommendation UC/CSU applications - Not required Common Application Requires a School Counselor Secondary School Report, and may require a letter of recommendation (check requirements for each campus you are applying to). Ask your school counselor if he/she can plan to do this for you; 4 weeks minimum lead time/not including holidays. May also require 1-2 teacher school report & letter of recommendation portion. Check with each school you are applying to. Detailed Letter of Rec instructions found on your Naviance account. Public and private schools outside UC/CSU and who do not accept the Common App; May or may not require a school report or letter of recommendation Be sure to check with each school you are applying to

22 Choosing the Right College Factors to consider Find the right fit Does it offer programs/majors that fit your interest and career goals? School size, student diversity, location & weather, non-academic opportunities, social life Public or Private? Avg admissions GPA & SAT/ACT? Housing guarantee? Study abroad program? Scholarship and financial aid opportunities Review campus options and choose both carefully and broadly Recommend 2-3 SAFE schools, 3-4 LIKELY schools, 2-3 REACH schools

23 Early Applications Early Decision Binding ~ you agree to attend the college if it accepts you. Apply to only one college through Early Decision You can apply to other colleges through regular applications If you are accepted to ED school, you must withdraw all other apps Early Action Not binding If accepted you can choose to commit or wait until spring You can apply Early Action to other colleges Reminder ~ counselors need a minimum 4 weeks (not including school holidays) to complete secondary school report/letter of recommendation. Check colleges for specific details
