5 Majors Various disciplines exist within Music Departments, here are some examples: Music Music Composition Music Education Music Performance Music Industry Musicology Concentrations vary by campus

6 Music Production Music Production programs are usually open to instrumentalists, vocalists, songwriters, and producers who aspire to Compose Arrange Produce Music in a variety of contemporary popular musical styles (pop/rock, R&B/Urban, hip hop, EDM, etc.) Music Production programs usually combine a rigorous course of study in music with an emphasis in computer and studio based music production

7 Music Industry/ Business Music Industry/Business programs prepare students to succeed in a rapidly evolving industry Education blends academics, practical knowledge and hands-on experience for those seeking a career in all facets of the music business, including: artist management the record industry music publishing radio music instrument manufacturing and distribution, live promotion and production, and arts management Students should look for programs where mentorship by faculty will be an option and emphasizes networking opportunities

9 Bachelor of Music (BM) vs. Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree at a university is more similar to the depth and rigor required by a conservatory For example, a student's course load for a BM degree may include 72 units of music coursework. This includes stringent requirements for music theory, music history and performance classes. Liberal arts degree with a concentration in music. For example, students will take music classes along with several liberal arts courses.

14 USC Thornton School of Music School blends rigors of a traditional conservatory-style education with the benefits of studying at a leading research university, the Thornton School offers students a thorough music education in a real-world context Located at the center of Los Angeles, the school is the collegiate partner of choice for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Opera, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the GRAMMY Foundation and The Recording Academy, to name a few.

15 University of Southern California Thornton School of Music Admission Process 1. Submit USC Admissions Application 2. Applicants must also be sure to fulfill all other Thornton application requirements for the particular program to which they will be applying, which in many cases will include performing an audition. 3. The deadline to apply for admission to the USC Thornton School of Music is December 1st. All required application materials must be submitted by this date. 4. Transfer admission decisions are generally reached after June 1st.

16 Los Angeles College of Music Bachelor of Music Degree 1. The Bachelor of Music (BM) Degree program is a full-time program. Three majors are available for the BM degree, Music Performance, Music Production and Composition. Bachelor of Arts in Music Degree The Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree program is a full-time program. The BA degree program currently only offers a major in Music Industry Studies Music Business.

18 Traditional University vs. Conservatory A music school is an educational institution specialized in the study, training and research of music. Such an institution can also be known as a school of music, music academy, music faculty, college of music, music department (of a larger institution) or conservatory. 24 California State University General Education (GE) Certification CSU GE Certification pattern is 39 units and 5 areas: Areas A-E Satisfies lower division GE requirements for CSU system. Students who not dot complete CSU GE Certification are subject to the general education requirements at the university they attend New General Education sheet comes out every year, but student holds CATALOG RIGHTS

25 Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) - IGETC is approximately 39 units and consists of 6 areas: - Private universities might accept IGETC - Satisfies lower division requirements for UC system and CSU system - Students who do not complete IGETC are subject to General Education requirements at the university they attend - Students must complete all courses on IGETC with a grade of C or better. - AP Scores may be used to satisfy GE areas. - New IGETC Sheet comes out every year, but students have Catalog Rights

26 ASSIST is a computerized studenttransfer information system that displays reports of how course credits earned at one California college or university can be applied when transferred to another. ASSIST is the official repository of articulation for California s colleges and universities and therefore provides the most accurate and upto-date information available about student transfer in California. The ASSIST acronym stands for Articulation System Stimulating Inter-institutional Student Transfer. ASSIST.ORG

32 Letters of Recommendation Identify potential recommenders by getting to know faculty on campus and getting involved in department activities, clubs, and organizations. Re-introduce yourself to your recommender in person or via Ask for permission to list them as a recommender Prepare an information packet that highlights your student story, accomplishments and why you are applying to this particular program Consider deadlines, you should ask for a letter of recommendation at least two weeks in advance, but ideally 4 weeks Follow up with your recommender when the deadline approaches and say thank you for their submission

33 Auditions & Portfolios All Students are required to AUDITION & submit PORTFOLIOS Some auditions may be in person while others may allow you to submit a recorded audition This is an opportunity for students to highlight their talents Reviewed at the discretion of the Office of Undergraduate Admission and the department faculty in conjunction with university admission requirements
