Program Eligibility To be eligible, each student must: Be American Indian, Alaska Native, or Native Hawaiian AND provide appropriate tribal/ancestry documentation (copies of relevant tribal enrollment forms issued from a state or federally recognized tribe, or verified Hawaiian ancestry documentation such as required by the Kamehameha Schools, or from the Ho'oulu Hawaiian Data Center); Be a current 10th grade or 11th grade high school student Have a 3.0 grade-point average (in core academic courses, not electives) Be a current or permanent resident of the United States Sorry, NO CH ALUMNI can apply this year due to limited space. Cost of Attendance Cost: The total program cost is $ and includes tuition, room meals, ground transportation, and all materials. Students are also responsible for their own transportation to the host campus. The actual cost per student is $2,000+! Financial Aid: Scholarships are available for both tuition and airfare travel assistance (each year we award travel assistance to over 50-60% of our students). Financial aid is determined automatically since students must include their parents financial information with their application Please Note: If a student receives a travel scholarship and decides to drop out after we have purchased airfare, the student s family will have to pay any cancellation fees and ticket costs. 8

Things to Remember When Applying Students & Parents: Please ensure that the addresses you provide are correct and current. Fill out all information as accurately as possible. Incomplete applications will be considered late. Mail ALL required components of the application in one packet. This ensures that pieces of the application do not get lost. Keep a copy of the application for your own records. This will protect you in the rare circumstance that it is lost in the mail. You can always contact us before the deadline via phone or if you have any questions. The CH application process intentionally mirrors the college application process What Type of Students Do We Look For? 9

Selection Process Our selection process is Comprehensive and Objective: Academic Achievement, Letters of Recommendation (kind of student you are, kind of person you are - character, hardship, notable achievements, involvement in Native community) Attendance (Tardy/Absences), Extracurricular, Native Cultural/Community Involvement, Diversity (gender, school, Tribal Nation, first-generation, state, etc.), and most importantly - Your Story, Ohana. In 2015: CH is a competitive program. Last year, we received over 300+ applications for just 100 seats Deadline Specific: Students who apply on-time are reviewed before and receive priority over late applicants This year, only 200 seats will be available Dates & Deadlines Deadline to Apply: Applications must be postmarked by February 4, 2015 Please Note: Late applications will be placed at the "end of the line" for review and students will be accepted on a space available basis. Other Important Dates: Early March Decision Letters Mailed & ed March 15 th Deadline for students to confirm program attendance and pay balance of tuition April 15th Deadline for purchasing airline tickets April 15 th Deadline to withdraw: student receives refund ONLY if a student takes their place 10

Tips for Students Remember Students need to complete the application, not a parent. If a parent does, we will send the application back Answer the short answer and essay questions thoughtfully Spend a good amount of time on the application winter break is a perfect time and start familiarizing yourself with the app now Get a friend to proof read your application before you submit it Don t wait until the deadline in February to submit Don t wait to get your Tribal Enrollment or Hawaiian Enrollment doc s Help us understand who you are and where you come from: What is it like where you grew up? What do you like to do and learn about? What are your family and/or cultural commitments? Do you have any special responsibilities at home or in the community? Tips for Teachers and Counselors Please help us: Contextualize your school (size, rigor, resources, etc.) Counselor tip if you don t have a school profile, create one Get students to take the ASPIRE or PSAT (10 th graders), and official SAT or ACT (11 th grade spring semester) Emphasize how your student differs from other students Providing more information than what is on the transcripts Including information that will help us understand a student s goals, motivation and positive qualities. 11

Info for Parents Parent Contact Info: Please be sure to have this as up-todate and accurate as possible! Prepare tax information ahead of time to be submitted along with the application Application fee and deposit breakdown: The application fee is $20 (non-refundable) Application deposit is $100 (refundable if student is not accepted or after being accepted, chooses to withdraw before April 15 deadline and a student takes their place) The deposit/fee can be submitted by sending one check or money order for $120 Why Do ALL Parents Submit Tax Info? Mirrors the College Application process Financial Aid to our program is allocated automatically Many parents can misperceive financial aid you don t have to be on welfare assistance to qualify for financial aid Expose parents to the college financial aid process taxes will be used to generate a preliminary FAFSA Preliminary Expected Family Contribution (EFC) determined for specific scholarship searches Tax information is not used in the selection process nor kept at CH, all tax information is returned to the family Family Structure Effects Financial Aid Married, Live with Both Parents but Never Married, Single parents, Divorce, Remarried Step Parent, Custodial/Non Custodial, Legal Guardian, Grandparents, Older Siblings, Aunts/Uncles Helps us counsel our students on merit vs. need-based scholarships, schools to apply to, etc. 12

Which Parents Tax Info to Submit? If parents/guardians are married, submit joint tax forms (or individual tax forms if filing separately) If parents/guardians are divorced or separated, submit both, if possible. At very least, we need tax info from the parent with which the students resides for 51% of the time, the Custodial Parent. If a Custodial parent has re-married, submit the Step Parent tax information too. If the student is living with a relative who is not the legal guardian or parent, submit tax info of the person with whom the students lives 51% of the time. Numbers don t say it all: Please explain any financial hardships or changes in income you ve experienced over the last year. After Being Admitted What s Next? We will guide you through the next steps: Confirm participation Make tuition payment or accept scholarship Book airfare through our travel agent Receive pre-program homework instructions Practice ACT or SAT Test Brainstorm worksheet & draft college essay Complete preliminary FAFSA Self-assessment survey Complete draft of Common App Parents and students will be able to log onto a Wiki site for further program info and resources 13
