Three months prior: Three months prior to the career fair, identify any sponsoring partnership possibilities and the budget. Select the date, location, and approximate timeline for the event. Begin creating the list of health professionals to invite to the fair. (Remember, list a variety of professionals. You will want to think of local professionals who are young, so students can relate to them.) Two months prior: q Create and send flyers for the event to area schools. Include the date, time frame, location, and a list of health professionals. Include a registration form, asking interested schools to return it in about one month s time. Indicate the deadline to register on the form. q Decide on the list of professionals. Remember to have a variety of professionals and the younger, the better to relate to students and have accurate information about the education required for their career. q Information was sent to area health care providers, same time frame, to give ample time to make arrangements in their schedules. Also include a registration form, asking information that would be pertinent to their profession (which school, cost, length of education, etc.) 24

Useful Tip: q Try to invite a variety of professionals, including those not often though of, such as mortuary science, EMTs/Paramedics, dental assistants, and other professions that the young people are interested in. Try to keep the professionals young(ish) so students can relate to them and are comfortable to ask questions. q It will be necessary to follow up with a phone call or two, or maybe even three! HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS INVITED: Lab Technician Radiologist Dietician EMT Phlebotomist Social Services Registered Nurse Pharmacist Dental Hygienist Dentist Mortuary Science Massage Therapy Home Health Personal Trainer Sports Medicine Respiratory Therapy LPN Acupuncturist Speech Chiropractor MD Occupational Therapy Physical Therapy Public Health Orthotist *Suggested available occupations 25

7/10/13 Six weeks prior: q Order promotional items. The give a ways were related to the science part of STEM. q Mayville State University chose color changing pencils and pens that change color from your body temperature. AHEC choose color changing cups, that changed color when a cold beverage was poured into them. Union Hospital, Mayville, now Sanford Mayville, provided the bags for collection of all the goodies. The providers information was in the bags for the students to review at their leisure. q Begin planning the presenters-students timeline. (How much each student group will have with each presenter.) q Identify proctors, if needed. 26

Two weeks prior: q Submit a story to the local newspaper to make aware of event and invite parents, community members, open to the public. q Meet with facility persons to discuss set up of presenters. q Run a final inventory to confirm promotional items have arrived. q Confirm commitment from local newspaper to cover event. q Create the evaluation tool for collection of data. q Confirm Student Proctors commitment and schedule training. q Call Professionals to confirm attendance, cover any questions or concerns. Mayville State University provided Student Proctors, who guided invited students through the Career Fair. These proctors handed cards to each student to complete for evaluation purposes. Each presenter had 6 minutes to provide information to students and it was the responsibility of the proctor to keep the students on task so they had the opportunity to hear each of the professions. Students Proctors were given a $50.00 stipend for their services. Health Care Professionals were given a $ stipend as a thank you for their participation 27

Budget: Mayville State University $4, *Union Hospital (Sanford Mayville) $5, (FLEX Grant) Eastern AHEC In-kind *Alternative opportunities for match funding may be available ü Stipend to Professionals ü Stipend to Student Proctors ü Transportation expenses to schools for busing of students ü Lunch provided for Professionals ü Photographer ü Pictures and frames to participating Professionals as a thank you ü Give-a-ways for students Expenses: 28

Condensed Timeline q 3 months: Identify sponsoring partnerships, Select date, location and list of Health Professionals. q 2 months: Create flyer and registration forms. Send to schools with deadline indicated. Send information to Healthcare Providers along with registration form. q 6 weeks prior to event: Order promotional items. Create the daily schedule and students groups. Arrange proctors for each student group. q 2 weeks prior to event: Coordinate media, meet with facility staff to discuss set-up, do a final inventory of promotional inventory and students, finalize evaluation tool, confirm proctor commitment and training, confirm professional attendance, contact schools for final numbers. CONCLUSION There are jobs well paying, stable, rewarding careers Career planning while in high school has a great influence, as well as parents, educators, and community members AHEC is trying to help this industry by exposing students to these careers and connecting the supply to the demand. 29
