5 NHSC Overview The NHSC is committed to improving the health of the Nation s underserved: Uniting communities in need with caring health professionals Supporting providers by subsidizing their educational costs.

7 NHSC Overview What is the need? Approximately 53 million people live in communities with limited access to primary health care. The NHSC is working to change this by helping these communities recruit and retain primary care clinicians.
8 NHSC Overview Where do the NHSC clinicians serve? NHSC clinicians practice in geographic areas that have been designated by the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services as having a shortage of health professionals. These areas are called Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs).

14 Scholarship Program What is the Scholarship Program? Students dedicated to practicing primary care in health professional shortage areas (HPSAs) can compete for educational scholarships. In return for this scholarship support, they must agree to practice in communities across the nation where the need is greatest.
15 Scholarship Program FY Awards 100 Physicians; 30 Physicians Assistants; 50 Dentists; 7 Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Midwives 1,739 Applications Received
16 Scholarship Program What is the service commitment? One year of service for each year of scholarship support (with a minimum 2-year commitment). Scholars are responsible for contacting potential employers and securing employment at an approved NHSC Scholar Site. NHSC will assign Scholars to sites only if they are unable to find employment on their own.
17 Scholarship Program What support is provided? The NHSC provides full payment for up to 4 years of: Tuition and fees Reasonable educational expenses Monthly stipend

23 Loan Repayment Program What is the service commitment? A minimum 2-year commitment for full-time clinical practice at an approved clinic It is possible to amend the contract beyond the initial 2 years for additional loan repayment. In this case, support is offered 1 year at a time.
24 Loan Repayment Program NHSC LRP participants serve at one of more than 14,000 NHSC-approved sites located in federally designated Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs). A higher HPSA score indicates greater community need, so the NHSC Loan Repayment Program offers two levels of loan repayment awards.
