3 Message from the director A healthy Indiana needs healthy communities and it needs health professionals located in all areas of the state from the inner cities to the rural neighborhoods prepared to help educate citizens about health problems and issues and to provide quality healthcare. Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) play an important role in providing communities with healthcare professionals prepared to meet their needs. The mission of the Metropolitan Indianapolis-Central Indiana Area Health Education Center (MICI-AHEC) is to address regional healthcare workforce shortages through education and collaborative community relationships that assist students, career seekers and health professionals. MICI-AHEC is one of eight AHECs based in communities across the state and is responsible for a nine county region, which includes: Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Morgan and Shelby counties. Our strategies include: Introducing young people and adult career seekers to various healthcare career options. Developing opportunities for future health professionals to receive their clinical training in underserved areas. Providing continuing education and professional support to health practitioners. Recruiting health professionals to serve in underserved communities brings more activities and summer opportunities than ever for Indianapolis and Central Indiana youth and adults. As you will see, our summer programs are geared toward all interest areas in health care and an age range from 5th through 12th grade. For those programs with a fee, scholarships are available to those who have inability to pay. We encourage you to fill out the application and indicate your need for scholarship. Healthcare providers and health professionals are also encouraged to peruse our offerings and contact me if interested. The Metropolitan Indianapolis-Central Indiana Area Health Education Center (Mici-AHec) seeks to provide communities with healthcare professionals prepared to meet their needs. The goal of the MICI-AHEC program is to enhance access to quality healthcare, particularly primary and preventive care, by improving the supply and distribution of healthcare professionals through community/ academic educational partnerships. An important way to achieve this goal is through community outreach, clinical exposure and providing access to resources and continuing education opportunities. This guide provides a sampling of classes and educational programs available in 2014 through MICI-AHEC. Most camps require a fee; however, financial assistance is available for those who apply and qualify. For more information, please call

8 OUR SUMMER CAMPS FOR STUDENTS Doctor Camp Grades: 5 8 Wednesday, June 11, 2014 Location: IU School of Medicine, IUPUI Campus Target Audience: Students interested in a career in medicine, or other healthcare careers Pre-Registration: Required by Friday, May 30, 2014 No Cost Program Objectives: Increase knowledge of the medical profession, foster an awareness of disease-health careers connections, facilitate an interest in healthcare careers, encourage college attendance, provide opportunities for college preparedness activities, fun health-science activities, and more. Camp MD Medical Detectives Grades: 9 12 Thursday-Friday, June 12-June 13, 2014 Location: IU School of Medicine, IUPUI Campus Target Audience: Students interested in a career in medicine, or other healthcare careers Pre-Registration: Required by Friday, May 30, 2014 Cost: $50; Scholarships Available Program Objectives: Increase knowledge of the medical profession, foster an awareness of disease-health careers connections, facilitate an interest in healthcare careers, encourage college attendance, provide opportunities for college preparedness activities, fun health-science activities, and more.

9 Breaking the Myths of Nursing Grades: 9 12 June 26-June 27, 2014 Sponsored by: Indiana University School of Nursing, MICI-AHEC, and Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. (Eta Chi Chapter) Location: Indiana University School of Nursing, IUPUI Campus Target Audience: Underrepresented students and males interested in nursing, but open to all high school students interested in nursing Program Objectives: This program will provide students with a unique hands-on opportunity to learn about the field of nursing from advanced practice nurses, nursing faculty and current nursing students. Students will learn about preparing for college and nursing school.

10 Healthcare Hoops Camp Academic Enrichment/ Basketball Camp Grades: 6 12 Monday-Friday, July 7-July 11, 2014 Location: Pike High School Target Audience: Students interested in basketball, health-related careers in sports and general academic enrichment in math, language arts, nutrition, etc. Pre-Registration: Required by Monday, June 30, 2014 Cost: $150; scholarships available Program Objectives: Increase knowledge of math and science through enrichment activities, learn the fundamentals of basketball through drills and activities, increase knowledge of health careers, foster an awareness of health-science connections, facilitate an interest in fitness and nutrition, encourage healthy life choices and provide opportunities for unique and fun health-science activities. Pharmacy Camp Grades: 9 12 Monday-Friday, July 14-July 18, 2014 Location: Butler University Pre-Registration: Required by Friday, July 3, 2014 Cost: $150; scholarships available Program Objectives: The primary focus is to increase knowledge of the pharmacy field, foster an awareness of health-science connections, demonstrate the practical application of pharmacy science principles, provide opportunities for unique and fun pharmacy and health-science activities.
