We have seven regional campus locations with specialist facilities, such as scaffolding, plant and roofing, plus a unique purpose-built tunnelling and underground construction facility in Ilford. We also deliver most of our health and safety, leadership, and training and assessment courses locally or on site across the UK. The National Construction College at Bircham Newton, King s Lynn, offers a range of en-suite bedrooms with a colour TV in every room. You can also enjoy our campus dining facilities including a restaurant for main meals, as well as a Costa Coffee offering pastries and paninis along with a variety of coffees and other beverages. There is a bar, swimming pool and a fully equipped gym on the campus along with a superb conference facility, The Birches, offering meeting rooms and conference suites. 10 National Construction College Apprentice Awards NCC Apprentice Awards The National Construction College is proud to be recognised as the leading training provider for specialist construction. It continues to be the largest training provider of its kind in Europe supporting over 26,000 individuals every year including over 700 apprentices, and enjoying achievement rates well above the national average. Each year, at our annual Apprentice Awards ceremonies, we celebrate the success of those apprentices who have made an outstanding contribution to their studies and have demonstrated a real commitment to kick-starting their successful careers in the construction sector. The National Construction College is working hard to provide the highest standard of training for apprentices. In 2012/2013 CITB Managing Agency Apprenticeships were awarded an Ofsted rating of Outstanding. Apprenticeships Before applying to the National Construction College If you make an Apprenticeship application to the Skills Funding Agency, please be aware that only applicants aged between who have not been placed on a training scheme before can be guaranteed full funding for their Apprenticeship. Employers must be aware that they may have to make a contribution towards the Apprenticeship, if the application is for those aged who have had training before, or for those aged over 18. 12 Construction Apprenticeships Grant Up to 10,250 Year 1 The standard course is 19 weeks of training. The extended course is 27 weeks of training. Years 2 and 3 Employer-based work experience with assessment for the Level 3 NVQ/SVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations, carried out by the National Construction College. Civil Engineering Technician This course has been designed in close consultation with industry and aims to prepare apprentices to become responsible and skilled workers within civil engineering. A civil engineering technician s key function is to be the link between engineers, the management team and operatives on a construction site. The Apprenticeship will provide the skills needed in the role for setting out, quality control and checking and reporting on progress. Level 2 Functional Skills Mathematics English. Practical training Safe working practices in construction Managing excavation, plant and piling Laying domestic and large diameter drainage Levelling and setting out Mathematics for civil engineers Carrying out pre-pour inspection and testing of concrete The planning and design process and environmental considerations CAD Project management Surveying Sustainable construction Science and materials. Minimum of four GCSEs at grades A*-C or equivalent (to include Maths, a science subject and English). All candidates will be required to complete a Skills Learning exercise and to attend the college to complete a Maths test. This is a combination of classroom-based theory and workshop-based practicals. The apprentice will take part in group tutorials as necessary and there will be periodic progress reviews. Assessment will take place via: Written and practical assessments (mapped to Diploma and NVQ/SVQ Diploma competence levels) A site visit (via an assessor) A synoptic practical test An assessment (delivered via a test at the end of each unit) Online multiple choice assessment test. BTEC Diploma Level 3 Construction and Built Environment Level 3 NVQ/SVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations Level 2 Functional Skills Personal Learning and Thinking Skills. 13 Formwork Grant Up to 10,250 This course has been designed in close consultation with industry to provide a sound working knowledge of a wide variety of skills that will prepare the apprentices to work competently on site. Formwork is an essential component of the reinforced concrete construction process. It is the term given to either temporary or permanent moulds into which concrete or similar materials are poured to form the elements required to complete a structure. This Apprenticeship will provide the necessary skills to fabricate, set out and erect formwork structures using a range of materials and proprietary systems in the construction site environment. Construction Diploma This course includes apprentice training in Construction Technology. This provides apprentices with a wider base of both skills and knowledge of the construction industry and will include training in: Interpreting information Estimating resources Basic building methods Building elements Building materials. All candidates will be required to complete a Skills Learning exercise, and some will need to attend the college for further tests. This is a combination of classroom-based theory and workshop-based practicals. The apprentice will take part in individual tutorials as necessary and there will be periodic progress reviews. Assessment will take place via: Written and practical assessments (mapped to Diploma and NVQ/SVQ Diploma competence levels) A site visit (via an assessor) A synoptic practical test An assessment (delivered via a test at the end of each unit) Online multiple choice assessment test at the end of the training course. 14 Steelfixing Construction Apprenticeships Grant Up to 10,250 Duration Up to two year training programme incorporating 13 weeks of off-the-job training at the National Construction College. Periods between college training are spent on site with the apprentice s employer developing skills and experience, whilst producing evidence for completing the NVQ qualification. This course has been designed in close consultation with industry to provide a sound working knowledge of a wide variety of skills that will prepare the apprentices to work competently on site. Reinforced steel is an essential component of the reinforced concrete construction process. Steelfixing is the term given to the construction of steel cages that are embedded within the concrete to give it structural strength. This Apprenticeship trade is generally associated with civil engineering i.e. the construction of roads, bridges, power stations etc. Functional skills Mathematics English. 15 General Construction This course has been designed in consultation with the industry and covers subjects that are essential to today s construction sites. A general construction operative needs to have a good understanding of the construction/civil engineering process. This includes knowledge of setting out for groundworks including kerb-laying and paving as well as drainage, laying and testing. Apprentices must also be able to understand and carry out all aspects of concreting, from the testing of fresh concrete to laying and finishing. Functional skills Mathematics English. 18 Plant Maintenance Plant Apprenticeships Grant Up to 10,250 Year 1 16 week duration in four blocks Year 2 9 week duration in three blocks Year 3 7 weeks at the National Construction College for those eligible to progress to Level 3. Total 32 weeks. Periods between college training are spent on site with the apprentice s employer, developing work-based skills and knowledge. 18 citb.co.uk/training This Plant Maintenance course has been designed in close consultation with the plant industry and aims to give apprentices a wide range of engineering knowledge and understanding beyond that required to achieve an NVQ/SVQ qualification. It covers subjects from bench fitting and basic engineering skills to the latest technological advancements in electro-hydraulics and computerised control systems.
