1 Roofer On-the-Job Training Guide Roofers install and maintain built-up roofs, flat deck roofs, steep roofs and other roofs with a variety of covering materials. Training Requirements: 4500 hours (3 years) including three levels of technical training. Technical training is currently unavailable as it is under redevelopment. Journeyperson to apprentice ratio for this trade is: 1:3 The information contained in this pamphlet serves as a guide for employers and apprentices. Apprenticeship training is mutually beneficial to both employer and apprentice. The employer s investment in training apprentices results in skilled and certified workers. The pamphlet summarizes the tasks to be covered by the apprentice during the on-the-job portion of apprenticeship training. An apprentice spends approximately 85% of the apprenticeship term training on-the-job. It is the employer s or journeyperson s training responsibility to supervise an apprentice s practical skills development until a satisfactory level of proficiency has been reached. EMPLOYER TRAINING RESPONSIBILITY promote a safety-conscious workplace provide mentored, hands-on practice in the use of tools and equipment provide mentored hands-on practice in the preparation for and the installation of built-up, single-ply and rigid pre-formed sheet roofing systems, and waterproofing and dampproofing provide opportunities to troubleshoot and correct roof defects further the apprentice s ability to interpret technical drawings introduce the apprentice to procedures used for estimating materials and costing projects ensure the apprentice can evaluate the end product Employers should make every effort to expose their apprentices to work experience in as many areas of the trade as possible. Below, in-school instruction is listed first; suggestions to help employers assist the apprentice to prepare for in-school training are listed next. The content of the technical training components is subject to change without notice. Technical training is currently unavailable as it is under redevelopment. 05/09

2 Level One Basic Roofing Skills Trade terminology Perform basic math calculations Identify roofing materials Moving equipment and supplies Identify types of roof structures avoiding slang terms when describing roofing materials taking the apprentice into the compound to identify and describe all products present ensuring proper lifting techniques are demonstrated and used Safe Work Practices Good housekeeping Roof safety Fire safety Safe vehicle operation demonstrating good housekeeping practices and roof safety and monitoring for consistency describing and demonstrating fire extinguisher use Tools and Non-Power Equipment Basic hand tools On-deck equipment Kettles, burners and propane Ladders, scaffolds and fall arrest avoiding use of slang terms when describing tools and equipment demonstrating proper and safe operating procedures having the apprentice use and maintain equipment ensuring familiarity with the requirements contained in the OH&S Regulations as they pertain to the roofer trade Blueprints Interpretation of blueprints and working drawings Use of Metric (SI) units and symbols supervising the measuring of various materials using both the metric and imperial systems allowing the apprentice to participate in the interpretation of blueprints and specifications Built-up Roofing Preparation of deck surfaces Identify types of built-up roofing Installation of built-up roofing ensuring the apprentice is told the reasons it is important to identify how the deck construction relates to roof access, material placement and installation procedures having the apprentice participate in the inspection of roof decks looking for defects describing the differences between different types of roof membranes having the apprentice identify the different types of roof membranes upon arrival at different repair jobs

3 Sealants and Fasteners Application of caulking and sealants Mechanical fastener installation ensuring understanding of the WHMIS system, symbols and MSDS sheets identifying common sealants and fasteners used in the industry and describing their specific uses demonstrating proper and safe tooling techniques and installation procedures Level Two Roofing Materials Identify BUR materials Identify steep roof materials Identify single ply materials Deck conditions avoiding the use of slang terms when describing roofing materials identifying various roofing materials and having the apprentice continue to identify these materials at different sites Built-up Roofing Procedures for preparing deck Installing substrate Installing membrane Install protective coverings Determine material quantities having the apprentice physically participate in all aspects of the application of a built-up roof assembly Blueprints and Specifications Specifications Sketches Trade math calculations Interpretation of blueprints and working drawings having the apprentice physically measure materials for cutting allowing the apprentice to participate in the interpretation of blueprints and specifications Power Roofing Equipment Operation of power deck equipment Operation of roof hoists Rigging operations demonstrating safe operation of power equipment explaining how to determine hoist capacity fully explaining the use of counterweights demonstrating the common knots used in the lifting process and having the apprentice apply this knowledge in real situations having the apprentice demonstrate proper hand signalling during actual lifting

4 Roof Systems Identify and apply cold process roofing Identify rubberized roofing and application procedures Identify types of rigid roof systems and application procedures having the apprentice physically participate in all aspects of the application of hot and cold applied roof membranes identifying common rigid roof materials used in the industry and describing their specific uses Level Three Foreman s Supervisory Duties Determine equipment requirements Calculate and order material Scheduling a work crew Troubleshooting fully explaining the estimation process using trade specific techniques having the apprentice do a material, equipment and labour estimate from a set of blueprints having the apprentice measure an existing roof for replacement reviewing the estimates and making recommendations for improvements having the apprentice locate and repair roof leaks on various types of roof systems Metal Flashing Estimation Fabrication Installation Soldering allowing the apprentice to estimate the amount of material required for specific jobs having the apprentice participate in all aspects of the fabrication and installation process demonstrating proper soldering techniques Steep Roofs Identify types of steep roofs Install asphalt shingles Install cedar shakes and shingles Install concrete tiles having the apprentice participate in all aspects of the installation process for each type of roofing material demonstrating proper use of lifelines and other fall arrest equipment and ensure their continued use Single Ply Membranes Identify types of single-ply roofs Apply PVC/thermo-plastic membranes Apply modified bitumen membranes Apply EPDM membranes having the apprentice participate in all aspects of the installation process encouraging the participation in manufacturer s seminars

5 Waterproofing Concrete and Masonry Surfaces Identify procedures for applying hot rubberized material Apply self-adhering modified bitumen membrane Apply damp-proofing having the apprentice participate in all aspects of the installation process fully explaining the need and installation of protection boards Consider apprenticeship training as an investment in the future of your company and in the future of your workforce.
