1 Information for new guests about Internet Your new accommodation is equipped with a fast Internet connenction. You have free access tot the Surfnet. Surfnet is a computer network for higher education and academic research, which provides very broad bandwidth Internet acces Part of the costs of the infrastructure is covered by a fee incorporated into the basic rent. The cost of the Surfnet connection and additional services is paid for by the educational institutions. Conditions Of course the use of these Internet services is subject to certain conditions. As representative of Surfnet in this matter and as ICT provider within the University of Nijmegen, the University Centre for Information Services (UCI) has laid down a number of conditions, which will generally not cause you any inconvenience. Nonetheless, being connected to the Internet automatically implies that you are expected to observe the conditions set by the UCI (see The SSHN s website also states that various university services are not yet available to tenants and which types of Internet communications are filtered for security reasons. The SSHN did not wish to add any further conditions to those mentioned above. However, the SSHN cannot be held liable for any failure or malfunctioning of the Internet connection. The SSHN and/or those commissioned by the SSHN to solve any (technical) problems that may be attributed to them as soon as possible. At any rate failure or malfunctioning of the Internet connection shall not constitute grounds for demanding a full or partial refund of the amount incorporated into the basic rent for covering part of the costs of the infrastructure. Furthermore, tenants shall not be entitled to claim damages or state other claims, for example, for the loss of downloaded files or with respect to failures or malfunctioning of the wiring in the complexes, active components or glass fibre infrastructure in town (commissioned by the UCI), or any loss or damage as a consequence thereof. The SSHN wishes you lots of luck installing this amazingly fast Internet connection! Practical information How to prepare your PC? You will need to equip your PC with a network card and driver. See the manual. In addition, you need to enter some data into your PC: IP address, subnet mask, gateway, host, domain name and DNS server numbers. The manual explains how to do this. Each unit has its own unique IP address, you will receive this address as well as other information from your complex caretaker (identification required). During the hours that the caretaker is present at your complex, you can also collect a connecting cable for your PC from his office. This cable will be added to the inventory list of your unit. If you lose this cable, the SSHN will charge you 16. Of course you also need an operational Internet browser on your PC. Troubleshooting You may encounter various (initial) problems when using the Internet service. First of all, have you taken the correct steps to activate the Internet service? (please check thoroughly!). Next, check whether your neighbour does have Internet access. Another option is to connect your neighbour s PC in your unit using the IP number assigned to your unit (or the other way round). 1

2 If you still cannot access the Internet, inform the caretaker (during office hours only). He will then carry out a few simple checks. If the caretaker cannot solve the problem the SSHN will resort to second-line support (UCI). There is no helpdesk is available (such service would have led to a considerable increase in the monthly charges ). Manual Windows network installation (only for Windows 95/98) Click on Start > Configuration > Icon network When everything is all right you see a window like here left It is possible that there is in the list a tcp/ip part is from your modem, you can leaf it there but when you are sure you don t use your modem than it is better to select and remove it. 2

When there isn t a tcp/ip you have to create one follow click on add an than below Microsoft you choose tcp/ip. You need the windows cd for this. Now you have your tcp/ip protocol you need to put in the numbers you received from the caretaker when you arrived Click on proportions for the next window. In the next window you have to fill in like in the picture left. Ip address and subnet masker In this window fill in your gateway and than click on add. 4 In the window for DNS you have to give your computer a name. Fill in your host and your Domein Don t forget the points. All these information you have received from the SSHN when you arrived here. Restart Windows and surf s up. Now you have to close the windows, click on oke and restart your computer. When the computer retarded you shout be have internet. But it is possible that you need to configure the internet wizard. In explorer go to menu extra >options > connection and than click on installation. In the first you need to click on configured by hand and than click on follow You have now to choose make connation with LAN click next The picture you now see has to be blank click on follow The configuration for isn t necessary now, so fill in no. Than click on complete. 4

5 Windows network installation for XP You need to click start > configuration > networkconextions. The window left appears Click with your right mouse button on the LAN connection click on proportions and the next window is appearing. Now you have to double click on internet protocol [TCP/IP] 5

6 This will bring you in the window like here left. Now fill in the numbers You have received when You arrived here, by the way when you lost them you can always go to the caretaker and collect again the numbers. 6

7 Go now from start > configuration to system and the window of next page show up. In this window we have to chance the workgroup. So click on change 7

8 Chance your identification Computer name and workgroup Look in the information numbers you received from your caretaker. Now close this window with oke Now you shout be have internet but it is possible that you need to configured the explorer. Open menu extra in explorer and go to internet options. In the appearing window choose connection and than wizard for internet connection. As follow choose >make connection with internet > make connection by hand > Make connection with Permanently LAN without password or users name. And than click on complete. 8
