AG Objective: How to set up a 3G connection using Static and Dynamic IP addressing Equipment: SITRANS RD500 Multitech rcell MTCBAH4EN2 modem PC with Ethernet card Internet explorer 6.0 or higher Ethernet cable While every effort was made to verify the following information, no warranty of accuracy or usability is expressed or implied. Overview 3G and GPRS are global standards in telecommunications for data transfer. Although initially 3G and GPRS were used in the public domain with cell phones, smart phones and mobile computing, they are now widely used for industrial applications for remote telemetry. These applications are generally know as M2M solutions. GPRS Manufacturing Data center The M2M solutions allow two-way communication between industrial equipment in the field (SITRANS RD500) and a host system. The host system could be a server, SCADA system or other communication Siemens Canada Limited Siemens Milltronics Process Instruments 1954 Technology Drive, P.O. Box 4225 Peterborough, Ontario K9J 7B1 / Canada Tel.: (705) Fax: (705)

device. In general, the equipment in the field will report alarm and data log information to the host system. In some applications, it is necessary for the host system to contact the device in the field and request information or configure the device when you turn it on. If your connection to the cell network is lost or your phone is off, your IP address is lost until you turn on your phone. At this point you are reassigned a new IP address. The dynamic IP address service allows the cell carrier to re-use IP addresses and not have to worry what IP address is being used by the device in the field. The disadvantage of dynamic IP is that you never know what your IP address is going to be so you can never get back to your device from the host system (unless a service such as Dyndns is used). Public Static IP With a static IP service, the cell carrier permanently assigns an IP address to your account. When the device in the field logs onto the network, the same IP address always is assigned to the device. The Static IP address allows the host system to contact the device in the field because the IP address is known and allows for full two-way communication. Third party management of IP addresses In some countries, the cell providers do not offer a public static IP service. Alternatively they lease a pool of IP addresses to data management partners who manage the static IP addresses for the end user and cell carrier. The cell carrier partners will deliver the SIM cards and assign IP address and APN login to the end users. APN For initial connection to the cell network whether it be dynamic or static IP an APN (Access Point) is required. An APN is like logging into your computer, it represents login credentials to allow access to the cell network. The APN information is provided by the cell provider. Custom APN A Custom APN or private IP will allow a private connection from the cell carrier to the host. In essence, the IP address of the device in the field is not publicly available. The APN is essentially a VPN (Virtual Private Network) from the cell carrier to the host system. Custom APNs are more expensive but deployment on a large scale would most likely warrant the extra cost with the added security benefit. DNS support DNS stands for Domain Name System (or Service or Server). Basically, the DNS is a network of DNS servers that sit on the Internet and have a database of domain names and their associated IP addresses. AG of 15

When you enter a Web site, for example URL into your web browser, a domain name server on the Internet will look up that domain name and resolve the IP address. That IP address is then used to contact that domain. When using DNS service in the RD500 you simply enter the IP address of your DNS server into the DNS server name in the network page. The RD500 s FTP and client allows the user to enter a domain name. This enables the RD500 to send the datalog files to a host whose IP address is not static. The FTP server or client s domain name is resolved by the DNS server specified in the DNS server field on the network page. The destination IP address will be resolved by the DNS server. That IP address will be populated next to the domain name in the FTP or pages. Default = PAP-CHAP Enter the PPP Username. This name authenticates the remote peer. (check with cell provider if required) Enter the PPP Password. This password authenticates the remote peer. (check with cell provider if required) 6. Click Submit. 7. Click Save & Restart (located on the Menu bar). The modem will reboot 8. The Status LED will go out during a Save & Restart. Once it is flashing, the unit is ready to go. 9. Open a Web browser. If all configurations are correct and the modem s CD LED is ON, you should now be able to access the Internet. 10. Check for the modem IP address by navigating to Statistics & Logs > PPP and see PPP local IP address. This is the address you will use to access the modem and RD500 remotely. Configuring the modem for the RD500 To start, you should decide which ports you would like to use for the RD500 services such as the web server and ftp server. In this application guide, we will use the typical predefined service port addresses for web and ftp. To set the RD500 web server on port 80 you will need to change the modem s web server port as follows; 1. From the modem web interface click on IP setup > HTTP configuration 2. Change the HTTP port field to something other than 80 as shown below AG of 15

3. Next, click on Networks & Services > Network Configuration. 4. Enter the desired name for the RD500 and the desired IP address and subnet mask. Note: Be sure the name given to devices and services are unique. 5. Enter the RD500 s IP Address. Example: x. and subnet mask. 6. Click Add. Note: The x in the address stands for a number which is different than the other IP addresses on the network. In this case, we use the default IP address for the RD Note: if you are using DHCP to assign addresses, the IP address range can be defined and static IP addresses must be associated with the devices MAC address see modem manual for more details on DHCP setup. AG of 15

7. Next click on Networks & Services > Service Configuration. 8. For the purposes of this guide we will use the default web service already defined. Note: If another port needs to be defined for any of the RD500 services, this is where the unique port and address information would be added. See example on next page where we are defining port 500 for the RD500 s web server. Note S port defines the local IP address range and the D port defines the external port, in this case port 500. AG of 15

9. Next click on Packet Filters > Packet Filters. 10. Any services that need to send data to external networks/servers will be defined here 11. In this example all connected devices will be able to communicate remotely. Note: To limit which devices and services should have access externally, you would change the setting of Host/Network from any to a specific device and the service field to a specific service. See modem manual for more details. The default should be used to allow the RD500 to fully communicate remotely. AG of 15

12. Next click on Packet Filters > DNAT Configuration. Note: this is where the RD500 can be set up to allow external clients to access its services on the local network. In the following example, we have added the ability to access the RD500 s web and FTP servers for remote access by using the predefined services in the modem. In this case the ports will be 80 for the RD500 web server and 21 for the RD500 ftp server. If different ports are desired they would be configured under networks and services as previously defined. 13. Set allow access to any. 14. Set external services to HTTP. 15. Set LAN IP to the name given to the RD Set internal services to HTTP. 17. Set internal source to NOCHANGE. 18. Click Add. 19. Repeat above steps for FTP making sure to choose FTP service rather than HTTP. AG of 15

Finally, click on Save & Restart. When the modem restarts and the PPP connection has been established, the RD500 should now be accessible through the modem on port 80 for the web server and port 21 for the FTP server. Open a web browser and type the IP address of the modem as follows; (where x.x.x.x represents your modem s IP address - find your IP address from the modem interface Statistics & Logs > PPP. To access the FTP server on the RD500, use an FTP client and type in the IP address. Be sure the FTP server is turned on in the RD500. AG of 15
