Presentation Descriptions Day 1 June 24th Presentations: Developmental Stages Revisited - Carlene Erikson This presentation will provide a basic review of developmental stages with emphasis on the theoretical models developed by Jean Piaget and Erik Erikson. Maslow s theory regarding hierarchy of needs will also be reviewed. Attachment Cycle - Overview - Carlene Erikson The basic theory of the cycle of attachment will be presented. This will include information on the biological importance of attachment; what constitutes a solid attachment; variations in attachment styles; and what events/factors can create significant disruptions in attachment. Trauma and Violence Exposure - Candice Chaloupka This presentation will explain the impact of trauma on the lives of children, individuals and families, including how trauma changes the development and functioning of the brain and later emotional, physical and mental well-being. My Normal is Not Your Normal - Carlene Erikson This session will explore the premise that children (and adults) with either emotional or brain dysregulation often do not perceive their physical environments in the same way their peers do. Environmental overload is often overlooked when considering emotional stressors in children. This workshop will examine the impact a child s physical environment may have on mental health. It will also include what clues children give when they are experiencing environmental overload, and what can be done to help the child. Creating Emotional Safety In The Classroom And The Home: Part One - Overview - Lynda O Meara, It is estimated that approximately one in five school-age children experience mental health concerns and are in need of intervention. These mental health concerns often present in emotional dysregulation and negative behaviors that can jeopardize adults and other children s sense of safety. How do adults effectively work with these high-risk youth while still providing for their own needs and the needs of other children? This four part workshop will increase our understanding of why children may become hyper-aroused and the factors that drive their reactions. Strategies to create emotional safety and to reduce the likelihood of these negative behaviors in the classroom and the home will be emphasized. In addition, ways to help children calm down and regain control will be presented.
4 Presentation Descriptions Day 2 June 25th Presentations: The Impact of Exposure to DV Across the Lifespan - Leah Kinnaird Using information from the Adverse Childhood Experiences study and other research, this session will provide information on how exposure to domestic violence impacts us from before we are born until our lives end. Alongside the impact of domestic violence, we will also discuss resiliency and the potential for healing after witnessing or experiencing abuse. Break-out Sessions 10:15 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Trauma and Addiction - Emily Kearney This presentation will address correlation between trauma and addiction, as well as the effect of the living environment where addiction is present. Compassion Fatigue - Leah Kinnaird Taking care of others is hard to do. We often hear that you have to take care of yourself before you can take care of others, but knowing the tools to accomplish that isn t always so easy. Join us in this workshop to discuss the impact of working in the helping profession, as well as exploring tools for self care. Burn out and fatigue are what keep people from being able to do this work long term, so come learn how to make sure you can be healthy for the long haul! Creating Emotional Safety: Part Two - Avoiding the Chaos Cycle - Lynda O Meara, Reactivity occurs when children have limited affect management skills. The chaos that ensues when youth are dysregulated can result in counterproductive adult reactions. Emotionally driven exchanges can occur that trigger greater impulsivity and the fight or flight response. This session will focus on understanding how emotional regulation is a developmental process and how missed skills need to be purposefully taught and practiced with feedback. Strategies for building missing skills and staying out of youth s chaos cycle will be presented. The Dramatic Triangle and Attachment - Carlene Erikson The dramatic triangle is a paradigm used in psychotherapy to describe a particular pattern of interaction. The three positions on the triangle are the victim, persecutor and the rescuer. Children who have attachment issues often function within this triangle and when they do it is a challenge for the adults. This workshop will focus on understanding the dynamics of the triangle; how to recognize when a child is attempting to draw an adult into the triangle; and how to move out of the triangle and into a more healthy interaction pattern with the child. Break-out Sessions 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Resilience- You are not born with it! - Candice Chaloupka The most important tool you can give a child is the ability to bounce back from life s challenges. This session will discuss what resiliency is and how to develop it in children and yourself! Attachment Disorders (part 1) - Elizabeth Heldt, Jorden Rijpma This presentation will include causative factors, prevalence, identification and presentation of this disorder throughout the lifespan. Creating Emotional Safety: Part Three - Providing Stability - Lynda O Meara, Structure reduces children s risk factors. Consistency provides something concrete for them to depend on. Predictability lets them know that they can count on something. Safety allows them to calm down and to hear you and to engage with you and not have their fear triggered. Integrated prosocial learning reinforces the structure. This session will focus on strategies for providing stability within the classroom and the home so children and adults can feel safe and can learn.
5 Forum/Consultation - Carlene Erikson Do you have a child that is stretching your professional skills to the limit? Come to this forum to discuss your concerns and get ideas for helping the child. Carlene Erikson, LISW will provide a safe space for participants to express concerns, ask questions and generate ideas for helping. In order to uphold the highest ethical standards, plan your questions ahead of time and be prepared to disclose only the child s age, gender and if appropriate, general family dynamics (for example; a seven year old boy in a single parent home with three older siblings). Break-out Sessions 2:45 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. Attachment Disorders (part 2) - Elizabeth Heldt, Jorden Rijpma This session will concentrate on engaging and management of children with Reactive Attachment Disorder in the educational and childcare setting. Creating Emotional Safety: Part Three - The Cost of Caring - Lynda O Meara, There is a cost associated with caring regularly for dysregulated children and attempting to balance our work and personal lives. This cost can be evaluated on a continuum of physical behavioral and psychological signs and symptoms that manifest differently for each of us. Taking care of ourselves is a personal responsibility yet requires a supportive work environment and the understanding of others. This session will emphasize the need to develop a self-care plan and the power of reconnecting with the rewards of our work.
