2 ABRAXAS OHIO For over 20 years Abraxas Ohio has been serving youth and families through partnerships with juvenile court systems and child caring agencies throughout the state of Ohio. The Abraxas Group, through which Abraxas Ohio originated, was established in 1973 under a contract with the Pennsylvania Governor s Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse and through the grassroots efforts of a group of professionals committed to assisting individuals in achieving a sober and crime-free lifestyle. Utilizing a behavioral approach embedded in a Modified Therapeutic Community and calling on the strength of peers and community to encourage and support growth and change, Abraxas became a haven for change in rural, northwestern Pennsylvania. Abraxas Ohio grew out of the success in Pennsylvania and through the years has undergone an evolution of its own. In response to the ever-changing needs of youth and their families, our substance abuse treatment has grown to 90 beds and we have added a 10 bed Behavioral Health unit specifically to provide treatment to youth involved in sexual misconduct. Abraxas Ohio subsequently expanded its treatment services beyond its Shelby campus into Counseling Centers in Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus. Although rooted in substance abuse treatment, Abraxas Ohio continues to expand its service offerings as the needs of our young people continue to increase in complexity. Various evidence and competency based curricula have been added in addition to the implementation of The Sanctuary Model as a foundation for treatment. We pride ourselves on our holistic approach to treatment as we believe that treating the whole person is essential to produce real and lasting change. At Abraxas, recovery is not just about sobriety. Recovery is about emotional well-being, intellectual growth, competency development and so much more.

3 TREATMENT TRACKS CLINICAL SERVICES Drug and Alcohol Treatment 90 day and long term treatment options Male youth between the ages of 12 - under 21 Youth must have personal substance use/abuse/dependence history In addition to the above criteria: Each youth referred is reviewed utilizing the ODADAS Protocol for Levels of Care and the ASAM admission criteria in order to determine his need for treatment services. A referred youth s dysfunctional behavior is expected to be severe enough to require treatment and be considered outside the continuum of normal troublesome adolescent behavior. Abraxas Ohio does accept youth with co-occurring disorders such as substance abuse and mental health. Behavioral Healthcare Specializing in juvenile sex offender treatment 9 to 12 month treatment program Male youth between the ages of 12 - under 21 Youth must have a history of sexual offending or sexually abusive behavior Youth may be adjudicated dependent or delinquent and must be able to be safely and effectively managed and treated in an open residential setting The capacity at Abraxas Ohio is 100 beds. There are 90 AOD Beds and 10 JSO Behavioral Health Care Beds. All residents in the Behavioral Healthcare program will have single rooms. Drug and Alcohol Treatment Abraxas Ohio s substance abuse programming is firmly grounded in the principles of 12 Step Recovery and 12 Step Philosophy. Abraxas also recognizes the importance of evidence-based programming and has added the Matrix Model and Living in Balance to the clinical programming. Recognizing the difficulty that most recovering youth have managing emotions, particularly anger, Abraxas has added Aggression Replacement Training to the existing curricula. Youth in the drug and alcohol treatment program also receive the following clinical services: Individual counseling a minimum of once a week Daily group counseling for a minimum of three hours per day Family counseling Behavioral Healthcare Abraxas Ohio s Behavioral Healthcare program is certified by the Ohio Department of Youth Services to provide juvenile sexual offender assessment, treatment and transitional services. Through a cognitivebehavioral therapy model of treatment, the Behavioral Healthcare program provides comprehensive mental health services with an emphasis on eliminating future sexual offending behavior. Our program utilizes the Juvenile Sexual Offender Assessment Protocol-II (JSOAP-II) and the Estimated Risk of Adolescent Sexual Offense Recidivism (ERASOR) along with measures of protective factors to guide treatment, ensuring that services are individualized to meet the needs of the clients we serve. Youth in our Behavioral Healthcare Program receive the following services: Individual and group therapy is provided by a licensed therapist Partial Hospitalization services are provided by certified or licensed staff Ongoing assessment of risk and treatment needs Family counseling including those for the purpose of reunification in situations involving family members as victims Psychiatric services if deemed necessary Psychological evaluation as needed Evidence and Competency Based Curricula Living in Balance: Moving from a life of addiction to a life of recovery Thinking My Way to Freedom Aggression Replacement Training The Matrix Model for Teens and Young Adults - (AoD Program specific) Teen intervene - (AoD Program specific) Pathways Curriculum by the Safer Society Press (Behavioral Healthcare specific) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Behavioral Healthcare specific) Stages of Accomplishment Trauma Outcome Process

5 LIFE SKILLS AND INDEPENDENT LIVING Our Life Skills and Independent Living Program ties directly to Sanctuary Model Principles. Specific principles built into the program include Social Learning, Open Communication, Social Responsibility and Growth & Change. The program enables youth to make better choices and accept greater responsibility for their own lives. Each youth completes a Casey Life Skills Assessment. An Independent Living Plan is developed using the results from the assessment and input from the youth, the youth s counselor, parent/guardian, placing agency, and significant others in the youth s life. The independent plan includes the strengths, skill deficits, and resources of the youth. Youth work with their counselor and program staff to address any skill deficits through individual counseling sessions and weekly independent living groups. The program addresses areas that include but are not limited to the following: Academic support Post-secondary education support Career preparation Employment programs or vocational training Budget and financial management Using community resources Health education and risk prevention Family support Mentoring and support systems Room and board / financial assistance and utilities Daily living skills COMMUNITY SERVICE Residents at Abraxas Ohio participate in a variety of volunteer activities within the local community. Staff and youth perform community service activities together. These activities take place both on and off grounds. We partner with a variety of agencies to provide the youth with numerous learning opportunities and experiences, including: Malabar Farms, Wayne County Humane Society, My Very Own Blanket, YMCA Rotary Camp, Community Action for Capable Youth, Adopt a Highway, Salvation Army, Downtown Mansfield Inc., and the City of Shelby. Our youth and staff completed over 3,400 hours of community service in the last year.

6 FAMILY INVOLVEMENT Recognizing the importance of recovery for the whole family, Abraxas Ohio encourages participation in family sessions and visitation with youth. Abraxas seeks to remove barriers to participation and as such, offers assistance with transportation when needed. We are committed to helping families work toward strong recovery as a family system and as part of a community. Youth involved in drug and alcohol treatment receive family drug and alcohol counseling by a certified or licensed clinician. The program offers additional family education sessions and family therapy to clients with assessed needs in this area. DISCHARGE PLANNING AND REINTEGRATION RECREATION Abraxas Ohio offers a variety of recreational activities. The 80 acre campus includes a full size gymnasium and weight room, three outdoor basketball courts, sand volleyball court, football and softball fields. There is also a pond on campus that residents may use for fishing. We run three intramural programs throughout the year to include basketball, softball and football. Each sport includes a training/coaching clinic in which we teach the rules of the game and lessons in sportsmanship. Following the clinic, teams compete in league play. A variety of off grounds recreational opportunities are also available to include: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland Zoo and Rainforest, the Football Hall of Fame, Cleveland Indians Baseball games and many others. Discharge planning begins upon admission to the program. Consideration of continuing care needs and the estimated length of treatment are essential in the early stages of assessment/treatment in order to ensure thorough planning. The focus on discharge and continuing care will intensify as each youth progresses through treatment. As residents prepare for discharge and reintegration into their communities, a comprehensive aftercare plan is developed with them, their families and their caseworkers and/or probation officers. Community resources are identified to support ongoing recovery. Referrals are arranged for ongoing substance abuse and/or mental health services, including medication management. Residents are encouraged to attend 12 step recovery support groups, such as AA or NA, as well as to seek a sponsor. They are also encouraged to identify recreational activities in the community that support wellness. Re-entry into school or other educational/vocational programs is facilitated and supported. Counselors discuss the expectations for home and community with youth, their families and referring agencies. As residents near discharge, and if appropriate and approved by their referring agencies, passes are encouraged to assist with facilitating re-entry into the community.
