6 Certificates and Designations Course Exemptions and Certificate Requests J Refer to Course Exemptions on page 253 for details about how to apply for a course exemption. The exemption requirements for Business Skills and Management certificates/ courses are as follows: You must have completed the equivalent course within five years of the application for exemption; you must have taken the equivalent course at an accredited post-secondary institution; you must have obtained a grade of C- (60%) or higher in the equivalent course; and the equivalent course must have approximately the same number of hours as and at least 80% content overlap with the course from which you wish to be exempted. When you request a Business Skills and Management certificate, you must provide proof that you have completed Grade 12 English with a grade of C (63%) or better or have an approved equivalent. Generally, you are required to complete certificate requirements within three years. General Business Accounting Certificate Today s financial world requires analytical, flexible and motivated accountants. This certificate helps you find your place in the industry by providing you with the basic skills you need to start an accounting career. 7 Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping Equivalencies George Brown College, in co-operation with the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping (CIB), offers courses leading to a career as a professional bookkeeper. CIB is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to preparing people for greater financial and job security as Certified Bookkeepers. The CIB offers a certificate that is comprised of nine courses covering both theory and computer applications. Once you have completed the nine courses, the CIB will award you with a certificate, and you will be governed by a Code of Ethics that sets out professional responsibilities and conduct. 8 Certified Employee Benefit Specialist Designations These designations are for human resources professionals looking for certification in benefits and compensation. The following four designations are available: J Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) J Compensation Management Specialist (CMS) J Group Benefit Associate (GBA) J Retirement Plan Associate (RPA) To obtain the prestigious CEBS designation, you must complete eight courses (six compulsory courses and two electives) and the related exams. This designation provides comprehensive, integrated knowledge in total compensation. To obtain each of the CMS, GBA and RPA designations, you must complete three courses and the related exams.
