2 A Message from the Training Director It is an exciting time at the Alaska Laborers Training School (AKLTS) as we prepare for a great training season. There are many changes happen ing - the biggest are the two brand new, state-of-the art Training Schools in both Fairbanks and Chugiak. Fairbanks has added over 15,000 square feet oftraining space with the opening ofthe new, two story building. The Anchorage tra ining school has moved from the South Anchorage location to a new building located in Chugiak. This will be a more central location to accommodate those coming from the Mat-Su Valley and beyond. This facility has a dormitory that will provide housing for those traveling. These new schools will allow expanded training opportunities to members, helping to provide the skilled training that the Hiring Halls depend on. The training schedule has been developed to cover training needs identified from you, the members, as well as the Hiring Halls. Training is a critical component for all Alaska Laborers to ensure that all members are highly trained and skilled to meet the needs of the contractors. A new Grade Checking program has been developed which will allow the Alaska Laborers to meet the increasing demands for skilled grade checkers. There are also new requirements for certain skill based trainings, which are described in the course descriptions. All of the training prog rams are designed to allow members to continue to develop their skills and qualifications. Training is what sets Union workers apart from everyone else. Be sure to apply for the training you need early. All applications must be received at least two weeks prior to training. Space is limited and classes will fill up quickly. Remember to check your certifications and know when they expire. The apprenticeship program is also a critical component to our future. The Apprenticeship Program builds tomorrow's work force today. It is up to us to make sure there are enough skilled laborers to fill the demands of the construction industry as Alaska continues to grow and build its infrastructure. We deeply believe in Alaskan Hire and the Apprenticeship Program is the pathway to ensure that happens. If you know someone who has what it takes to become an Alaska Laborer, encourage them to apply for this incredible career opportunity. We count on our members to help recruit apprentices as well as assist in training and mentoring them throughout their On -the-job-learning (OJL), developing them into highly skilled Construction Craft Laborers. Let's keep Alaskans working by recruiting and training our own. Board of Trust ees Labor - Local 341 A.J. 7 SAFETY... It is Everyone's Business As the seasons begin to change, so do the situations at work, home and on the highway. Be alert and aware of your surroundings. Many jobs will be working long hours as the days get shorter, focused on getting construction projects completed or buttoned up as cold weather descends. Be aware of fatigue and changing work conditions, watching out for yourself and fellow workers. Check your automobiles and be prepared for cold weather. Make sure your tires have good tread as the icy season approaches. Safe tires make a big difference and can help avoid accidents. Check your home's smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and change the batteries. Talk with family members and make sure you have a safety plan in place. It is important that everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency. Take time today to put these steps into practice. Safety is a main topic in all AKLTS training courses It is a critical part of every job. Always take the time to review safety procedures. Make sure you practice these methods in your everyday personal life, as well as on the job. Safety is not an accident, it is a habit that is consciously developed.
