2 Course Descriptions SKILLS TRAINING Blueprint Reading - 40 hrs This course introduces a trainee to basic blueprint and plan reading. It covers a combination of light commercial, commercial and highway prints, exposing the trainee to a variety of construction plans and blueprints. Concrete Practices & Procedures - 40 hrs This training course covers many aspects of the concrete industry, including mix proportioning, mineral and chemical admixtures, forming systems, sub grade preparation, placing and curing of concrete. Trainees participate in extensive step-by-step hands-on training such as placing and vibrating concrete. Flagging / MNDOT - 4 hrs This course exposes trainees to the rules and responsibilities of agging and basic understanding of traf c control devices and layouts. ach trainee will receive a MN/DOT agging handboo. Foreman Preparedness - 40 hrs This course provides a prospective foreman with leadership techniques utilized in the construction industry. It consists of instruction on communication techniques, construction math, job safety and hazard analysis, project organization and documentation, problem solving and human relations. Prerequisites: Level 3 Apprentices and Journeywor ers General Construction - 40 hrs This course provides a trainee with the fundamentals of the construction industry. It covers the following topics: gas, electric & pneumatic tools, materials recognition, agging/traf c control, compaction, rigging & signaling, torch cutting and burning, and introductory construction math. *Note: Mandatory for all Apprentices Heavy and Highway Skills - 40 hrs This course introduces practical applications of various tas s and nowledge needed for successful highway and large excavation projects. Instruments - 40 hrs This course prepares an individual to perform the basic duties of grade chec ing, elevation setting, and various tas s associated with using instruments on building and highway heavy projects. Light Rail - 8 hrs This course covers how to ma e rail, includes technical discussion, economics of trac, hand tools, equipment and trac types. Line & Grade - 40 hrs This course familiarizes a trainee with the fundamental s ills needed to wor with lasers, levels, transits and hand-held levels to perform grade chec ing, slope and ditch calculation, grid sta ing and layouts. It involves a combination of classroom lecture and demonstration with extensive hands-on training. It is highly recommended for highway heavy construction laborers. Prerequisites: Instruments Mason Tending - 40 hrs This course provides a trainee with a thorough understanding of the duties and responsibilities of the mason tender such as: mortar mixing, scaffold usage, material handling, job site safety, bloc saw and hand tool safety and recognition. Pipe Fusion - 8 hrs This course is designed to educate students on the theory of polyethylene pipe fusion, the techniques utilized in both butt fusion (hand & hydraulic) and electro fusion, the use of mechanical ttings, and testing procedures. Pipelaying I - 40 hrs This course is an introductory course to the sewer and water industry. It covers utility line and grade considerations and basic procedures for the installation of gravity ow and pressure piping systems. It also exposes the trainee to pipe fusion techniques. Pipelaying II - 40 hrs This course covers advanced pipe laying techniques and math calculations for utility line and grade. It covers utility sta ing, utility testing procedures, sediment & erosion control, and a comprehensive loo into crew responsibilities. Participants will also receive excavation and trenching safety, con ned space awareness training, the Minnesota state plumbing code (pipelayer s card), and utility blue print reading. Prerequisites: Pipelaying I Pipeline Safety - 40 hrs This course introduces the tas s associated with natural gas and petroleum pipeline construction. Trainees learn about proper locating techniques, site grading, fence building, pipe stringing, dewatering techniques, pipe preparation, pipe coating, lea detection, testing and cathodic protection. Plaster Tending - 40 hrs This course provides a trainee with a better understanding of the duties and responsibilities of the plaster tender such as: plaster mixing, material handling, job site safety, scaffold usage and hand tool safety and recognition. Remote Camera Inspection / Trenchless Pipe Renovation - 40 hrs This course covers the proper operation and maintenance of remote camera inspection equipment, jetting and pipe cleaning techniques, various pipe and manhole relining and replacement methods, and the use of remote cutters for reinstating services in lined pipe. Prerequisites: Pipelaying I & II or a minimum of 2 years pipelaying eld experience Rigging and Signaling uali ed - 24 hrs In this class a laborer will learn how to successfully and safely perform rigging procedures through the use of OSHA safety principles. This course will cover advanced math for rigging problems such as volumes and weight calculation, sling tension, and center of gravity formulas. We will also cover rigging equipment with the use of signaling and hands on training. Prerequisites: Apprentices must complete Safety Wee and General Construction. *Note: There is also an 8 hour Rigging and Signaling uali ed course available to Journeywor ers (some level 3 Apprentices may qualify only with Apprenticeship Director or Training Director approval) Scaffold Erecting - 40 hrs This course provides a thorough base nowledge of safe and ef cient scaffold erection of various scaffold types such as: system scaffold, rolling tower scaffold, tube and clamp, and welded tubular frame scaffold. It also addresses covering and sheltering techniques for mason scaffold. A trainee receives a scaffold competent person card upon successful completion of the course by achieving 80% or better on the exam. SWPPP Installer (Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan) - 8 hrs This hands-on course is designed to provide an MPCA Installer level certi cation. The course focuses on the installation & maintenance practices and procedures involved with erosion/sediment control. Contractor challenges will also be discussed. There will be an exam requiring a minimum score of 70% to certify. *Note: This course meets MPCA standards. SWPPP Manager (Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan) - 16 hrs This hands-on course is designed to provide an MPCA Site Manager level certi cation. The course focuses on the supervision of the installation & maintenance practices and procedures involved with erosion/sediment control. Contractor challenges will also be discussed. There will be an exam requiring a minimum score of 70% to certify. Prerequisites: Journeywor ers Only *Note: This course meets MPCA standards. Torch Cutting / Demo Safety - 16 hrs This course covers torch set-up, safety, and hands-on training in cutting for demolition. Welding / Air Arc hrs This course is a combined welding course. Torch Cutting covers various types of demolition torches, demolition safety in regards to torch operation and includes hands-on training. Trainees also receive an introduction to air arc cutting. A trainee receives 5 welding credits from the state vocational system upon successful course completion. Trainees demonstrating advanced pro ciency may test for welding certi cations. Prerequisites: Apprentices must complete Safety Wee, General Construction and Torch Cutting

3 ENVIRONMENTAL TRAINING Asbestos Air Sampling - 16 hrs This course is designed for Asbestos Wor ers and Supervisors who wish to collect air samples in accordance with MDH regulations. Prerequisites: Asbestos Wor er or Supervisor nitial *Note: Registration through your Local Union Asbestos Abatement Training Asbestos Wor er nitial - 32 hours Asbestos Wor er Refresher - 8 hours Asbestos Supervisor nitial - 0 hours Asbestos Supervisor Refresher - 8 hours Asbestos training is offered year-round and is a recognized demolition practice by OSHA and the Laborers Union. Training complies with Minnesota Department of Health regulations for persons performing Asbestos wor in the State of Minnesota. ndividuals desiring to wor asbestos in the state of Minnesota must: Wor ers: rove 000 hours of construction experience Supervisors: Prove 2,000 hours of construction experience Certi cation in the state of Minnesota requires a picture and a state fee. *Note: Registration through your Local Union Hazwoper Training Hazwoper nitial - 0 hours Hazwoper Refresher - 8 hours This course covers 29 CFR , CFR 92. 5, and Hazardous Waste Operation Wor er Training (HA WOP R). t consists of a combination of 30 classroom hours and 0 hands-on training hours. Lead Training Lead Wor er nitial - 2 hours Lead Wor er Refresher - 8 hours Lead Supervisor nitial - 32 hours Lead Supervisor Refresher - 8 hours Training complies with Minnesota Department of Health regulations for persons performing Lead wor in the State of Minnesota. Only supervisors desiring to wor Lead must prove,000 hours of related wor experience. A state fee is required for certi cation in Minnesota. *Note: Registration through your Local Union Safety Week - 40 hrs This is an intensive safety course that includes OSHA 30, fall protection awareness, scaffold user, con ned space with re hole watch, excavation con ned space, some lead and asbestos awareness, and CPR/First Aid training. *Note: Mandatory for all Apprentices SPECIALTY TRAINING Contractors who are signatory to the Laborers Union may contact the Director of Training to inquire about specialty training offerings which include: Aerial Lift 8 hrs, Asbestos Awareness hrs, Asbestos O M hrs, Construction Math S ills 8 hrs, Disaster Site Wor er Training 8 hrs, Fall Protection 8 hrs, Fire Watch hrs, For Truc Awareness hrs, GPS / Total Station 0 hrs, ICF / Insulated Concrete Forms Technologies hrs, Infectious Control / Hospital Protocol 8 hrs, Lead Awareness hrs, Lead Renovator hrs, L D Awareness 8 hrs, Light Rail 8 hrs, Microbial Remediation (Mold) 2 hrs, MSHA 2 hrs, OSHA hrs, OSHA hrs, Pipe Fusion 8 hrs, Plumbing Code hrs, Pro-Ten 0 hrs, Scaffold User 8 hrs and Soft S ills 8 hrs. Whenever possible, contractors are encouraged to plan ahead for specialty training to ensure the availability of personnel and resources to accommodate requests. Specialty training is at the discretion of the Training Director. Important Note: The Minnesota State Plumbing Code (Pipelayers Card) now requires that you attend a hour refresher to renew your card. This hour refresher is offered on rsday morning of each Pipelaying II Course. SAFETY TRAINING CPR / First Aid - 8 hrs The Training Center offers American Heart and Lung CPR and mergency First Aid training. E ca ation / Con ned Space - 8 hrs This course introduces trainees to the hazards and responsibilities of wor ing in and around excavations and con ned spaces. This course complies with OSHA s training requirement for wor ing in con ned spaces. Students will learn proper procedures for entrants and attendants as well as proper rescue procedures, how to identify hazards and convey proper preparation procedures. Dress Code: Please note that when attending training, trainees must come dressed as they would for wor wearing long pants, shirts with sleeves and wor boots. This dress code policy will be strictly enforced for the safety of our members. Plan Ahead: Don t miss out on a job opportunity. Be sure to plan ahead and register early for refreshers as they ll up quic ly. Mine Safety / Health Administration (MSHA) - 8 hrs This course is a yearly refresher course on Mine Safety/Health Administration rules and regulations. Laborers must maintain a current certi cation to wor on mine property. Prerequisites: MSHA 2 -hour or Safety Wee with MSHA New Miner Training OSHA hrs OSHA recommends the 0 hour construction outreach training program as an orientation to occupational safety and health for wor ers covered by OSHA 29 CFR 92. Prerequisites: Journeywor ers only OSHA hrs This course instructs a trainee in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) for construction. It outlines the basics of OSHA, its mission in protecting the wor er and covers ten different subparts of the OSHA standards. Contact your Local Union Hall to register for Asbestos and Lead training courses. Contractors are encouraged to contact the Director of Training at ( 5 ) ith specialty training needs. The Training Center is located on the right hand side. CLASS SCHEDULE Daytime training classes begin promptly at 7 00 A.M. nd times vary based upon the type of class. LODGING/STIPENDS Trainees living outside a 75-mile radius by zip code qualify for a hotel room and stipend. Trainees share a room with another trainee at the Best Western White Bear Country nn Hotel located at 9 0 Highway White Bear La e MN 55 0 ( 5 ) VENDING Our trainee lunch brea room contains snac and beverage machines microwaves and refrigerators. No food service is available. REGULATIONS No Tobacco of any ind is permitted inside the facility. Smo ing is permitted outside in designated areas only. The Laborers Training Center bans guns on its premises. ATTIRE Appropriate wor attire is required. Dress as you would for wor when attending training courses. Wear long pants shirts with sleeves and wor boots. Come prepared to wor inside and outside. Hard hats and safety glasses will be provided. For safety reasons any trainee dressed inappropriately will not be permitted to attend class.
