6 Goal The p primary yg goal of the GEAR UP: Ready, Set, College! is to increase the number of students attending post secondary institutions Region One Education Service Center

7 Region One ESC works under the following assumptions All students can learn, and the school system controls the variables to impact that learning All students must have equitable access to a quality, college preparatory curriculum Students that falter need guidance, direction and support, and the school must meet these needs 2011 Region One Education Service Center 7

8 Region One ESC works under the following assumptions Parents and educators inherently want to help students succeed, and given proper access to appropriate information, will make good decisions regarding children s futures Implementation of new strategies requires time and support; and on-going development requires systemic approaches 2011 Region One Education Service Center 8

10 Region One ESC GEAR UP Family Engagement and Leadership Model for College and Career Readiness Focus: Empower campus teams to meaningfully engage with students and families through a structure which utilizes nationally recognized research by Johns Hopkins and Dr. Joyce Epstein. Utilize regional staff as trainers in comprehensive School, Family, and Community Partnerships Model for dissemination to district teams Focus: Empower parent leaders to impact peers and the system through a structured parent to parent training model. Utilize research and best practices to, with a district leader, provide parents with the resources, development, time and support to provide training to other parents, advocate for their own children, and provide support and input to the school system. Impact Policy, Practice, Procedures with Regard to family engagement at the campus/ district level. Audience: District Teams District/Campus Level lf Family Engagement Leadership Team Salient features include: Region One led Parent Regional TOT to Parent Training i Model Regional Meetings Team led by District/Campus representative Audience: District personnel, parent trainer teams Focus: Regionally developed and provided events focusing on areas of need for parents and families, Regional Family and including: Parent Financial Literacy Events/Conferences College and Career Pathways and Workshops Non traditional paths for gender roles (engineering for girls, nursing for boys, etc) STEM awareness Audience: District personnel, parents, students Provision of regionally developed college/career readiness resources to campuses and districts Focus: Provide campus teams with web based, and physical materials, and on site training necessary to implement effective, on going family engagement activities, including: Family collegiate and career presentations and activities, print materials, and online and web based materials Staff training Audience: District personnel, parents 2011 Region One Education Service Center 10

Not only THAT partnerships contribute to good schools and successful students But also WHAT is needed in an excellent partnership program? and HOW to organize and sustain high-quality h and effective programs of family and community involvement Region One Education Service Center 14

15 Type 1 THE KEYS TO SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL-FAMILY-COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS EPSTEIN S SIX TYPES OF INVOLVEMENT Type 2 PARENTING: Assist families in understanding child and adolescent development, and in setting home conditions that support children as students at each age and grade level. Assist schools in understanding families. COMMUNICATING: Communicate with families about school programs and student progress through effective school-to-home and home-to-school communications. Type 3 Type 4 Type 5 VOLUNTEERING: Improve recruitment, training, work, and schedules to involve families as volunteers and audiences at school or in other locations to support students and school programs. LEARNING AT HOME: Involve families with their children in learning activities at home, including homework, other curriculumrelated activities, and individual course and program decisions. DECISION MAKING: Include families as participants in school decisions, governance, and advocacy through PTA/PTO, school councils, committees, action teams, and other parent organizations. Type 6 COLLABORATING WITH COMMUNITY: Coordinate resources and services for students, families, and the school with businesses, agencies, and other groups, and provide services to the community Region One Education Service Center 15

17 How does the Action Team for Partnerships (ATP ) differ from the School Council or School Improvement Team? Council ATP School Council or School Improvement Team oversees the school s ENTIRE School Improvement Plan (SIP). School Council meets monthly to discuss all programs, assess progress, and plan next steps to attain goals in the SIP. Action Team for Partnerships (ATP) guides action to increase family and community involvement by writing an annual Action Plan for Partnerships linked to SIP goals. ATP meets monthly to discuss the schedule of family and community involvement activities, assess progress, and improve plans. School Council hears all committee reports and assists committees in helpful ways. ATP is one committee that reports plans and progress to the School Council for advice and support Region One Education Service Center 17
