2 Some comparisons The drop out rate for special education students is twice that of their peers. Regular education students attending college is double that of special education students. The adjudication rate of special education youth is four times higher than that of the normal population Prior to transition legislation in the IDEA, programs were confusing and not helpful in assisting students with disabilities to be successful in adult life. AND that issue remains. 2

3 For Special Education Students there is a law regarding transitioning to the real world The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 04) At 14 (in Colorado) the annual IEP must include a discussion of transition needs A statement based on transition assessment and goals must be written into IEP Specific planning and goal setting must be a focus. Academic preparation Independent Living Objective Possible Vocational Evaluation Plan must be documented in IEP Statement of goals & services must be included in the plan Parents must receive report on student s progress with Transition Goals 3

4 What are the skill areas that young adults must master to successfully bridge the gap? Self Determination (Who Am I?) Independent Living(What Do I Need to Know?) Preparing for Post Secondary Education (What are the steps..what are the supports?) Preparing for the World of Work. (What is a good fit? How do I get and keep a job?) HOW AND WHEN DO WE START THE PREPARATION? For parents: Start early discuss with and engage your child in all domains. For Teachers and Professionals: Provide lessons, elicit practice and provide guidance in all domains. SELF DETERMINATION/ SELF ADVOCACY INDEPENDENT LIVING MONEY MANAGEMENT LIFE SKILLS INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS HEALTHY LIVING TIME MANAGEMENT WHAT S NEXT, COLLEGE, TRAINING WORK OR GAP YEAR? 4

Accommodations for SAT or ACT Think about a career goal and college major Visit college campuses or take virtual tours Current Disability Documentation Lead your IEP meeting Develop and polish advocacy and study skills Meet with your counselor early in the year Explore possible college majors Be able to define yourself as a learner Details for college accommodations Finalize your Next Steps Portfolio SENIOR YEAR Visit Colleges Apply to at least 2 (Prepare Applications early and accurately) Attend Pre-Admission summer program if at all possible Take the SAT if appropriate Contact your DVR or SWAP person Fight Senioritis with all your being!!!!!
