With this in mind, the Houston Methodist Research Institute was designed to be different from other research institutions. It coordinates more than 540,000 square feet of research space embedded throughout the academic medical center, keeping the primary focus on patient care and turning knowledge into action. TRANSPLANT CENTER stands on more than 50 years of performing many firsts in the world of organ transplantation and is home to Houston s most comprehensive organ failure management and transplantation center. Hundreds of patients each year receive a second chance at life through organ donation and transplantation at Houston Methodist, including heart transplant and assist devices, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas, islet, bone marrow and every combination of multi-organ transplant. HOUSTON METHODIST RESEARCH INSTITUTE (HMRI) was formed in 2004 to rapidly and efficiently translate discoveries made in the laboratory and the clinic into new diagnostics, therapies and treatments. Important advances in biomedical sciences and health care are made by collaborative interdisciplinary teams of individuals with diverse scientific backgrounds and training. HMRI was created to provide the infrastructure and support for these endeavors, and to house the technology and resources needed to make innovative breakthroughs in important areas of human disease. HOUSTON METHODIST INSTITUTE FOR TECHNOLOGY, INNOVATION & EDUCATION (MITIE) is a 35,000 square-foot surgical training center and virtual hospital that provides ongoing physician education and surgical training in the latest techniques and technologies. MITIE employs advanced simulators, technical trainers, robotics and image guidance devices to make possible cutting-edge surgical training in a safe and effective environment. Houston Methodist, Texas Children s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine partner on the CENTER FOR CELL AND GENE THERAPY, which was the first program of its kind to combine basic science and clinical research with comprehensive pediatric and adult cell and gene therapy transplant units; the center treats patients with cancer and other genetic diseases.
