buildingsmart and Infra FINBIM Nordic Workshop, Helsinki, Report Kalle Serén, Eurostep Oy buildingsmart / InfraFINBIM Nordic Workshop Participants from Nordic Countries + some other countries Denmark: 7, Norway: 6, Sweden: 8, Estonia: 3, France: 1, USA: 1 ja Finland: 31 (57 participants) Program: AM: General presentation and status reports from the Nordic Countries PM: Presentations of some Finnish activities and Panel Discussion Aim: To identify the baseline and relevant standards To establish a common understanding of where we are where we want to go to To see whether a common Nordic view can be established Presentations to be available on the web: 1
Opening, introductions and setup, establishing common objectives for the workshop, Christer Finne, RTS The meeting stems from two lines of origin, the Nordic buildingsmart community and the Finnish InfraFINBIM workpackage for infra information sharing process development. The meeting is actually international because there are participants from outside the Nordic countries (France, Estonia and USA). From buildingsmart perspective e the infra domain is a bit different e from Buidling Contsruction o and the workshop highlights the special features of infra. The conclusions of the workshop are given by an expert panel discussion with an external view given by the French representative Christophe Destaing from the buildingsmart French Chapter. The Finnish Center of Excellence and its Technology Program: Built Environment Process Re-engineering (PRE) and the InfraFINBIM Work Package, Kimmo Laatunen, InfraFINBIM coordinator, VR Track Oy The InfraFINBIM workpackage is a part of the Built Environment Process Re-engineering PRE porgramme with the main funding from the Finnish technology funding agency TEKES. There are 18 consortium partners and the budget for InfraFINBIM is 6 M It is a new type of R&D initiative carried out as joint-venture development with strong industry involvement and supervision The vision is that the whole infra-sector will adopt a BIM-based way of carrying out construction projects by The targets is to identify, study and remove barriers in the process leading to a systemic change based on lean thinking. There are 3 main parts of the workpackage: WP1 Procurement Methods; WP2 Interfaces and standards; and WP3 New design and construction processes. In addition there are pilot projects, technology support through research partners; and a communication workpackage with international co-operation (especially through Nordic channels) Why do we need application independent neutral data exchange in the Infra sector? How can we develop it? What do we do with IFC, LandXML, GIS/ISO 19 00x? Possibilities and limitations, Väino Tarandi, Professor, KTH The rates of change of systems versus the long life-cycle of a product was discussed as well as different non-integrated archipelagos of information. There are several levels of integration possibilities: from single system environment to systems joined via an information hub enabling change management and access control. The business processes should independent from information and the implementation should be separated from these. In the building industry there are three main standardization aspects: Data model (IFC), terminology (IFD), and processes (IDM). These need to be extended to the infra domain. Collaboration around complex products with different applications needs a rich common platform. An example from the INPRO project was given, with development from individual modeling to collaborative work with integration based on a Collaboration hub with PLCS standard integrated support for buildings. Complete support for the product life-cycle with supporting maintenance objects was presented. INSPIRE transport systems was discussed: a node link standard (GIS standards) with the INSPIRE architecture and how it is implemented in Sweden, e.g. the Swedish implementation road and railroad networks database NVDB. Other standards and standardization aspects include CityGML and integration of standards for infra based on PLCS: interoperability between in different standards ISO 191xx + IFC + extension + Land XML. 2
Ongoing Swedish InfraBIM Activities, Väino Tarandi, Professor, KTH Swedish activities presented were: NDVB: network model for traffic networks with linked phenomena implemented in a database Nation Swedish Transport Administration: more efficient information flow through the process, from analysis, quantity take-off, etc. and a new plan and policy: in 2014 at least 75% of the projects are BIMbased with a paradigm shift from text and drawing documents towards models Operations & Maintenance: specification of object types, classification + a few properties (in tunnels) Railroad projects: Stockholm by-pass BIM VR (design, not yet under construction) Machine guidance projects Energy and power supply system modeling. Sustainable Urban Collaboration Hub (VINNOVA project) integrating different views of built urban environment Ongoing Norwegian InfraBIM Activities, Steen Sunesen, Managing Director buildingsmart Norway & Merete Töndel, Vianova Systems Norway Most notable aspect is the dependency on interoperability between sectors, e.g. in city planning A specially interesting issue is the wiring an piping problems: need for easy and regulated access to data and interoperability Norwegian Intelligent Transport System (ITS): interest in openinfra (based on ISO/TC211) Norwegian Intelligent Transport System (ITS): interest in openinfra (based on ISO/TC211) Norwegian public Road Administration: by year 2015 commitment to open format standards (also railroad) New project just starting: Overall interoperability of standards funded by Ministry of Environment, a joint effort: all sectors, mapping, easy access for all sectors and between sectors. Industry or government driven: funding the project, formats, terminology, use-cases; organization and system for regulated access. Focus on multidiscipline efforts, ISO/TC211 standards New handbook from NPRA (Public Road Administration: all disciplines in 3D, model-centric All big consultancy companies deliver in 3D models A rich model in design on top of ISO/TC211 with mapping, roads and railways covering design, construction and maintenance Development from isolated -> collaborative -> integrated design and construction 3
Ongoing Danish InfraBIM Activities, coordinated by Jan Karlshøj, buildingsmart Nordic, Lone Skaaning Blach, Rai Net Denmark, Sven Kold Johansen, The Danish Road Directorate Rail Net Denmark: owner and maintenance of railways: High-Speed Copenhagen-Ringsted Railway, finish 2018 Present: traditional l2d plans and profiles New project to be modeled in 3D, requirements for file setup, etc. quantities, and exchange of models, guidance for co-existence and clashes between models. The Danish Road Directorate 25 new large projects, historically high rate of new road projects Until now: design = production of paper drawings Now: 3D data to contractor Standards: local agreements based on BIPS and Bentley user group Workshop in June 2011: consultants, construction association, railway administration, and road administration: Outcome: agreement on cooperation and need for standards Preferably international standards Good timing for Common Nordic effort through this workshop Ongoing Finnish InfraBIM Activities and the Finnish InfraModel, Juha Hyvärinen, VTT InfraBIM common goal for InfraTM (owner/client) and infrafinbim (industry driven) Open international standards and guidelines and requirements for usage needed Inframodel: A subset of LandXML schema adapted to Finnish practices Includes specification of Scope, agreement of usage, and extensions using generic structures Support by 3 major vendors in Finnish market (Sito, Tekla, Vianova) (Bentley involved in InfraFINBIM pilots) Only a limited scope of the whole LandXML Published in Finnish, currently in the process of translation to English Contents: General info; Surfaces; Route planning general; Roads and streets; Railways; Waterways; Areas (e.g. landscaping); Water supply and sewerage Extensions include coding (for classifications) and illustrations and an extension to geometry: string line model Road and Rail Administration guidelines for using Inframodel have been published Inframodel has a quite long history, 10 years, and has only recently been taken into practice LandXML not entirely satisfactory, it is a short term solution, also needed are Guidelines & requirements; classification and coding systems for BIM; improved functionality per user requirements; and increased scope Further national, regional or international level development and adaptation is needed Bad news: Development stopped at LandXML.org 4
Report from the Singapore meeting, Juha Hyvärinen, VTT Singapore meeting: OpenINFRA project from French Communic-project was presented IFC infra was re-labelled as OpenINFRA (due to baseline of co-existence of multiple standards) Established steering committee in July 2011 led by French Chapter (members from Nordic Chapter & Norway Chapter) First steps for development: scope definition and study of existing standards ITM/UIG Resolution: The development project approved Scope, budget, time schedule to be detailed for March 2012 meeting in Norway All chapters should determine their possible contribution to the effort Existing standards and tools should be taken into account Transactional information sharing and distributed information management, Jukka Suomi, Tekla Oyj Development within the PRE programme / DRUM work Package Key issues From modeling to management Current centralized Concept vs Cloud Current centralized Concept vs. Cloud Master data stored in applications in native format published as needed Model ownership Coexisting and Interrelated partial models and distribution methods and interfaces Model concept summary: Logical models; Phases with logical models that coexist throughout the life-cycle Federated models Relations between models and between objects in different models Examples: Federated Wall information, example: change management, p g g Mechanical and structural model example (opening penetration for duct) Model level and object level relations with change propagation through chain of objects trough relations Managing building information as a set of interrelated partial models and linked project data Development project outcome creates foundation to define standard, which creates markets for cloud functionality 5
Harmonization of spatial data in Finland today (KRYSP, EUREF, INSPIRE), Juha Liukas, Sito Oy INSPIRE: EU directive for public actor data publishing and distribution KRYSP is the municipality implementation of INSPIRE Who are the public actors (Finnish geoportal: Paikkatietoikkuna): National agencies, municipalities and cities and other regional actors 3-phased schedule for different data groups of whihc the 3rd (finest granularity) is of interest as source and reference data INSPIRE mandated coordinate reference EUREF-FIN National level local level projection zones with better accuracy and easier data sharing (now four different coordinate systems used within the Helsinki Metropolitan area) KRYSP provides e-services for built environment for municipalities. It is a Finnish adaptaion of GML for Cities and Municipalities INSPIRE work is on-going with some schedule problemse EUREF-FIN is formally taken into use 2012 to unify the coordinate systems Data available due to INSPIRE: open data, models, data -> information Actions by a Public Owner, Timo Tirkkonen, Finnish Transport Agency Finnish Transport Agency objectives productivity (less money do more) easier procurement better asset management source information: avalaibility and quality information management over the lifecycle open general standardisation Activities INFRA2010: Inframodel, automation in infraconstruction InfraTM: many subproject, partly moved to infrafinbim InfraFINBIM 5D-Bridge Finnish bridge BIM R&D, e.g. guidelines for bridge modelling R&D InfraTHEME FTA own process development process development React to the vision of the infra FINBIM Roadmap for transition stage Controlled changes Co-operation within FTA and the regional ELY-centers Co-operation with infrafinbim BIM-based information flow: long life-cycle of infra structures Own development based on open standardisation, terminology guidance and requirements Inframodel2 guidelines into practice International co-operation 6
Panel discussion, participants from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and France Can we establish a Nordic agenda? What are the common areas of interest? What are the prerequisites for and the possibilities of success? How do we proceed? Panel discussion participants: Antti Karjalainen, Jan Karlshøj, Väino Tarandi, Steen Sunesen, Christophe Castaing Three main questions: (1) Can we establish a Nordic agenda? Which are the common areas of interest?; (2) What are the prerequisites for and the possibilities of success?; and (3) How do we proceed? Comments collected: The main issue is how we can link the different standards together from different sectors. Multiple standards are ok, but somewhere we must have a common understanding of the concepts, e.g. using a common backbone generic standard such as PLCS. IFD-standard for terminology/classification as a common Nordic library was one recommendation A map of the current activities and the impacts in the industry is needed, after that a roadmap on how to proceed can be drawn up. The most critical issues and most important things should be identified 90% of the money is in the construction phase. On short term quick benefits would be achieved with machine control: what is to be included in the models from the machine control point of view. Clients common goal for the long term is needed, but fast track / short term benefits are also needed. We need to share the experience from machine control projects in different countries. Object types have been defined in Sweden and Norway, we should use the existing work. How to define an object in infra through the life-cycle, dictionary and ontology work for long term. buildingsmart has had difficulty to develop infra, but there are more opportunities now with big stakeholders for road and railway involved. We need to define the concepts, revisit the already defined concepts, and define new concepts. The funding of the develoment work was discussed. All agreed that public funding is essential, at least in the beginning. Common EU money is available. A LandXML/Inframodel workshop was arranged with machine control vendors (which do not participate in InfraFINBIM) and Nordic standard for machine control info from design would be a big thing. One conclusion was that the Nordic countries are in the forefront of development. Also Netherlands, Japan and Korea are active. Actions and conclusions (not in any priority it order): The international OpenINFRA project has two first needs: (1) a memo on LandXML is needed for buildingsmart; (2) a meeting in December on IFC Bridge is to be held, somebody from Nordic countries should attend the meeting. In the short term effects, feedback and experiences from on-going projects should be compiled. InfraFINBIM should appoint a responsible persons to collaborate with OpenINFRA. Homework for everybody, to collect ideas and think about next steps. Map of existing activities in Nordic countries needed and roadmap for development. There are not many open standards available in infra. on short term LandXML-based solutions are the only options. Suggestions for working methods: increase the personal network, e.g. exploders, one webinar per month. A Nordic public traffic administration support statement or letter of intent for the need for open standards, models and data exchange is needed. A Nordic IFD-library to define objects should be developed. There are overlapping activities in the Nordic countries and the projects should be co-ordinated on Nordic level. Next workshop topic could be on activity integration. 7
