3 Starting Point & Objectives Co-operative mobility systems are being developed all over world and standardization is proceeding rapidly. However services and applications that could be deployed in the future with reasonable efforts and costs have been missing. WiSafeCar aimed to develop an effective service framework/ platform, and an intelligent wireless traffic safety network between vehicles and infrastructure with using both sensor & observation data to offer secure & reliable real-time services for vehicles WiSafeCar analyzed applicability of these solutions to a high-speed vehicular environment with changing network topologies and where nodes may not have prior knowledge of each other until they meet Content-centric networking was studied and implemented to increase efficiency of sharing disseminated information & assure secure content exchange WiSafeCar used technologies in an innovative way in vehicular networking and succeeded in this 3

4 Finnish Background WiSafeCar was closely related to main Finnish national strategic R&D initiatives. WiSafeCar project was strategically important to the Finnish Meteorological Institute in efforts to provide more accurate road weather information and forecasts in space and time. Finland s Strategy for Intelligent Transport by the Ministry of Transport and Communications in 2010 has increased the importance of WiSafeCar. The Finnish Transport Agency likewise the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications, are members of the WiSafeCar Advisory Board. 4

5 Results WiSafeCar offers new advances in terms of optimized mobile services, open software for future research, numerical results from piloting, demonstrating and testing of the network and output of road the weather forecast model, etc. The developed framework for vehicle-to-vehicle network with real-time weather information, etc. data enables a variety of new applications and services to be further developed and deployed Development and collection of temporally sensitive data from several sources with different levels of accuracy helps to deploy a mobile sensor network that is a lot discussed within standardisation bodies and automotive industry. WiSafeCar has been able to pilot Content Centric Networking According to the Finnish impact assessments for instance the amount of traffic injuries could be decreased with 11% with the help of real time weather warnings to vehicles (Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications) 5

6 Main Achievements 4 new products were developed based on the project results. FMI s Route weather prototype UBRIDGE s PND device (on-board-unit) for WiSafeCar Service Infotripla product context Solutions for service providers, a real time traffic data service (the first in Finland complying the DATEX2 standard) VTT s communication gateway that uses Content Centric Networking (CCN) instead of a traditional bi-directional connection between two nodes. Taipale Telematics Sensior device expanded with weather related data collection functionality 4 products were improved using the result of the project. FMI s Road weather service Infotripla product context End user solutions, feature added for visualising probe vehicle observations and weather warnings on a map interface Mobisoft's mobile application framework for Windows, Windows CE & Windows Mobile. Added support to use XML based SOAP server interfaces directly from inside the application. Option to use CCN network to transfers messages via a peer-network-peer setup instead of the traditional peer-peer connection CRPHT: Dynamic carpooling service supported by a SOA and Multi Agent System; Secure mobile authentication for services and users on the move; Graphical routing application for smartphones and monitoring interface. 6

8 Content Centric Networking CCN principle is that a communication network should allow a user to focus on the needed data rather than having to reference a specific, physical location where that data is to be retrieved from. Three test scenarios: 1&2. test (transmission range, delays) Maximum Transmission range about 180 m Information acquiring from CCN; delay average 20 ms Information acquiring from Internet; delay about 580 ms CCN about 30 times faster than current IP solution 3. test proof of CCN advantages Information acquiring without knowing information source and provider. Operates as expected, no need to fetch information from server several times. 8

9 Standardisation Activities related to standardisation WiSafeCar plans & results have been mirrored against on-going activities by the main standardisation bodies (CEN, ISO & ETSI). WiSafeCar has introduced the ideas and given suggestions to these bodies (e.g. Car 2 Car Forums, International Workshops on Vehicle Communications for Safety and Sustainability, DATEX II User Forum, etc.) WiSafeCar was also presented to and talked with the Head of Unit of ICT for Transport, DG Information Society and Media, European Commission. 9

15 Finnish Pilot The field piloting in Finland started gradually in spring 2011 and continued until the end of the project (March 2012). The fleet of 5-7 vehicles was used to collect both sensor and observation based data that was delivered further successfully both by WLAN and cellular connection to the LinkingPoint server. This server delivered information further to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) to be used in their road weather models. The refined weather data was received back from FMI to the server by the WiSafeCar services. The same solution was also successfully implemented in South Korea with the WiSafeCar on-board PC, which was developed during the project. 15

16 From WiSafeCar to WiSafeCar work continues in the follower project Cooperative Mobility Services of the Future with partners from Finland, France, Luxembourg, Romania, Slovakia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey. started in July 2012 and aims to promote the creation and deployment of co-operative mobility solutions, including devices and applications, feasible for large scale deployment support ing the objectives of the European Commission s ITS Action Plan and national ITS strategies. It brings existing and emerging sensor units, service platforms and communication technologies & solutions closer to market introduction and creates business models to promote and speed the deployment. One important issue to be dealt with is the use of a vehicle bus (e.g. CAN) as a data source (collection and fusion of data from vehicle bus of several vehicles). Also HMI s need to be carefully planned to avoid driver distruction. 16

17 and DRIVE C2X In Finland will be closely related and linked to the FP7 ICT project DRIVE C2X, which will carry out a comprehensive assessment of co-operative systems through extensive European Field Operational Tests. will provide material and results for the co-operative test-site in Finland and thus help DRIVE C2X the site operator in the assessment by providing vehicles and technologies needed. Special emphasis and contribution of will be on harsh winter condition testing. Additionally one of the Finnish partners (FMI) is participating in a FP7 ICT project conducting extensive European Field Operational Tests, called FOTsis. 17

18 Nomadic device scenario will also study complicated scenarios where several different types of nomadic devices are being used in one vehicle. In this kind of a situation the aim is to find out, which nomadic device would be the main gateway channel to communicate with other vehicles, roadside unit, and back-end infrastructure. The answer could be the nomadic device with a system installed. will study different alternatives and related challenges. 18

19 Implementation Plans Implementation of the commercial system in Finland based on the results of WiSafeCar and will start by approaching all the stakeholders that have commercial vehicles on the Finnish roads and streets already now. Most of these vehicles are equipped with technology capable of being connected to the platform and services. Deployment in Finland is highly dependent on the activities and support of the authorities. Activities carried out and successful piloting can be used promote the services in the discussions with the public sector. The key word is increased safety which is also one of the cornerstones of the Finnish national transport policy. However the exploitation activities and promotion of will also be targeted directly to the end-users and car industry. 19
