10 Automation of Road Construction Caterpillar s Productivity Studies 2006 RESULTS Overall time for building the road was 3 ½ days vs. 1 ½ when using automation (AccuGrade System in this case) Increased in overall job site productivity of 101% Higher and more consistent accuracy (subgrade 86% within tolerance of ± 2 cm, base course 98% within tolerance of ± 2 cm) 43% fuel savings on average (excavator, road grader, bulldozer, truck)

11 An Example Information Model based Machine and Quality Control, Case Excavator Production model has been sent to the 3D machine control system Foreman on site can follow the work using tablet application, i.e. is able to see the 3D models used, etc. Excavation is done guided by the control system Also operator makes the as-built surveys using the system and sends the measured information to the database Builder consultant or owner can follow and accept the work through his own internet access

14 Conclusion For the Infra Industry, information modeling (Infra BIM) and automation mean a revolutionary change from traditional drawing and manual machine control to the level of continuous information modeling and machine automation based work process Obtained and measured benefits in early surveys, design, machine work control show remarkable savings and better accuracy of structures to be achieved Current intensive technology development will also offer many new possibilities for infra industry in near future, an expectation for the next generation for more open and more dynamic road construction management methods is concluded
