HIT includes the use of electronic health records (EHRs) instead of paper medical records to maintain people's health information. What constitutes a health IT professional? A health IT professional is someone who is qualified to support the adoption and implementation of Electronic Health Records (EHRs), information exchange across health care providers and public health authorities, and the redesign of workflows within health care settings to gain the quality and efficiency benefits of EHRs. By the Numbers As an increasing amount of physician practices and hospitals move toward the EHR system, a growing amount of qualified HIT professionals are needed to assist hospitals and physicians as they move to adopt EHRs. In general, the United States expects a shortfall of 50,000 qualified HIT workers in the next five years 2

4 The Roles Implementation Support Specialist Networking, EHRs, HIE, Standards, Healthcare Terminology Technical/Software Support Staff Additional Customer Service Component Implementation Manager Project Management, Workflow Processes, Leadership, Culture Whitney Snyder HIT Coordinator Your point of contact throughout the program Coordinate logistics of the cohort Help you through the application process In-house assistance Put you in contact with your mentor What the program encompasses The HIT certificate training program at Jefferson Community College is a six month course that will enable the candidate to attain HIT certificates in two HIT Roles and attain working knowledge of many facets of HIT. The ONC classified HIT certificate roles span the skills needed for managing health information and EHRs even if your company does not have an HIT department. 4

5 Program specifics Developed for those with HIT, IT and/or health care backgrounds Instruction is 8 hours each week plus an online learning component Fridays: 8:30 a.m. 5:00 p.m. USB drive preloaded with information No textbooks Need a cohort of at least 10, have seats for 22 No laptops needed in classroom No prerequisites Curriculum delivery 8 hours each week plus online component Taught at JCC in a classroom with a live instructor Laptops in the classroom Using actual EHR software Curriculum based on the ONC model Students assigned to a mentor No real grade given during program The Exam Two certificate tests included in the tuition cost (third can be purchased separately) First exam will be Implementation Manager Second exam can be either Implementation Support Specialist OR Technical Software Support Staff Third exam can be purchased by student separately Student responsible for scheduling and taking their own exam The certification is a National certification based on ONC curriculum and is transferrable to other geographic areas 5

6 Time Frame Program begins January 11, 2013 Ends June 28, 2013 Take first exam March 2013 Second exam between June and August 2013 Requirements for Success In order to be successful, students are required to have: Out of class: Access to a computer and the Internet for the approximate online learning class hours An account The ability to print. In class Ability to understand and work in a health care environment with computers and technology and apply concepts learned in real-world situations Attend Friday class sessions Tuition Per person, tuition is $1,275 Discounted through a one-time grant from ONC MyCAA may apply if you are a military spouse If unemployed, talk to the WIB about tuition assistance through Individual Training accounts Due January 4, 2013 Application Available after the information session Must return completed application by 5:00 p.m., Friday November 9,
