1 Building an HIT Workforce: Western States Region B Health IT Workforce Training Tessa Miley Program Coordinator Butte College Caryn Rizell Associate Director, Workforce Development California Primary Care Association The (Federal) HITECH Act Seeks to improve American health care delivery and patient care through an unprecedented investment in health information technology. The provisions of the HITECH Act are specifically designed to work together to provide the necessary assistance and technical support to providers, enable coordination and alignment within and among states, establish connectivity to the public health community in case of emergencies, and assure the workforce is properly trained and equipped to be meaningful users of EHRs. Combined, these programs build the foundation for every American to benefit from an electronic health record, as part of a modernized, interconnected, and vastly improved system of care delivery. opportunity employer. 2 1

2 Workforce Development The workforce development program to be established under the Recovery Act consists of four programmatic components described in separate Funding Opportunity Announcements. These components include: Community College Consortia to Educate Health Information Technology Professionals Information Technology Professionals in Health Care: Curriculum Development Competency Examination for Individuals Completing Non-Degree Training Training Grants Furnishing Academic Program Development Assistance for University-Based Training of Health Information Technology Professionals 3/14/2011 opportunity employer. 3 Community College Consortia to Educate Health Information Technology Professionals Program A grant program that seeks to rapidly create health IT education and training programs at Community Colleges or expand existing programs. Community Colleges funded under this initiative will establish intensive, non-degree training programs that can be completed in six months or less. 3 Who are we? The Western Region Health IT Program (WRHealthIT) is a consortium made up of 14 community colleges from Arizona, Nevada, California and Hawaii. The program is funded out of the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) under the auspices of the Federal HI-Tech Act. 5 HIT Workforce Demand Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Department of Education and independent studies indicate a shortfall of approximately 51,000 qualified health IT workers required over the next five years to meet the needs of hospitals and physicians opportunity employer. 9 Our Purpose To prepare Health IT workforce to assist hospitals, clinics, and doctors offices with the installation, maintenance, and deployment of electronic medical record systems. Workers prepared in one of the target roles will receive education in short-term, six month or less certificate programs from one of the member colleges in our consortium. These roles are in one of six skill sets defined by ONC These new career paths offer health practitioners and Information Technology professionals a unique opportunity to combine an interest in health information, business, and computer information science. 11 ARRA HIT Professional Workforce Development Project Western Region Mission The Mission of the Western Regional Health Information Technology Consortium is to promote the achievement of Meaningful Use of EHR by health care providers through selecting, preparing, and deploying Health Information Technology specialists for the needs of the modern health care system who can implement their skills in the inpatient as well as the primary care and physician offices of the future.
