2 Health Informatics A discipline at the intersection of information science, computer science, and health care. It deals with the resources, devices, and methods required to optimize the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of information in health and biomedicine. Health informatics tools include not only computers but also clinical guidelines, formal medical terminologies, and information and communication systems. It is applied to the areas of nursing, clinical care, dentistry, pharmacy, public health and (bio)medical research.

3 National Priority $40 billion dollars allocated to provide incentives for meaningful use of health information technology through adoption of electronic health records (EHRs), create a health information exchange (HIE) and infrastructure to include 60 regional extension centers, 4 research centers, 15 demonstration projects and workforce development thru community colleges & universities American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA) through Office of National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) Goal is to increase quality, provide currently inaccessible medical information, reduce costs, reduce the 98,000 deaths/per year due to medical record error reports Largest need in healthcare settings: Information Technology (IT), Health Information Management (HIM), Clinical Informatics (CI) but also in biomedical research, industry, and academia 70 Community Colleges will train 10,000 individuals per year in the 6 community college roles Up to 200,000 HIT workers needed to implement EHRs with a shortfall of 50,000 over next 5 years (US News) 58% of healthcare organizations plan to increase IT staffing in next 12 months (Modern Health Care)
