3 City of Coventry Coventry University The City Coventry is a lively, multi-cultural city with a rich history embracing the old and the new. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Cathedral Quarter where the modern architecture and ancient ruins of the two Cathedrals dominate cobbled streets with bustling cafés, pubs and restaurants. Walk through Coventry s pedestrianised citycentre and you ll see over 1000 years of English history, ranging from the medieval charm of historic Spon Street to the architectural innovation of Millennium Place. You ll find all the main high street stores and plenty of small specialist shops to cater for your every need. Entertainment and Leisure As a focus for entertainment and leisure, the City s reputation is rapidly on the increase. There is an enormous variety of places to eat, drink, dance and relax, including the 33m Skydome complex. This houses a multi-screen cinema, bars and café bars, two nightclubs, and quality restaurants. There is also a 4,000- seat arena, a popular concert venue that doubles up as an ice rink for our championship winning ice hockey team Coventry Blaze. Culture If you re looking for a cultural experience, the Herbert Art Gallery and Transport Museum are definitely worth a visit. You may also like to take in a show or two at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry s premier theatrical venue, highly renowned for staging local and national productions. Sport There s plenty on offer for sport lovers too. The Ricoh Arena, home to Coventry City Football Club is a new development which houses a 32,000 capacity football stadium. This will also be the venue for some of the UK s most high profile sports and entertainment events. The 113m multi-purpose development expands over 72 acres and is one of the most prestigious arenas, conference and exhibition centres in the country. Rugby fans are well catered for by Coventry Rugby Club s new 6,000 capacity Barker Butts Park Arena. In addition we couldn t be closer to the City sports centre which is home to an Olympic sized swimming pool. As we are situated in the centre of England, we are also very close to Edgbaston, a venue for international test cricket. Local Area Coventry is close to some of the most historic, cultural and scenic areas of the UK. Tourists and visitors from around the whole world are drawn to our region by Shakespeare s literary heritage. His hometown of Stratford-Upon-Avon remains a popular tourist destination. Other places of interest include Royal Leamington Spa, the castles of Kenilworth and Warwick, and Coombe Park, a 300-acre estate comprising an abbey, formal gardens, woodland nature trails and wildlife. Transport Links Birmingham International Airport is 15 minutes away from Coventry and Birmingham, England s second city, is just 25 minutes away. Its National Exhibition Centre is one of the country s main music venues and is also home to many trade and commercial events. London, the capital of Britain is only 60 minutes away by train and Oxford, another popular destination is about 40 minutes away. The University Coventry University is a major UK Higher Education institution of 15,000 students with more than 150 years of history behind its name. The University has an established academic presence both regionally, nationally and internationally. The Campus The University occupies a purpose built 33-acre campus in the heart of Coventry City-centre directly opposite the worldfamous cathedral where the graduation ceremonies are held. The campus is lively and bustling and its central location is only a short walk from shops, banks, pubs, clubs, cafés and restaurants. The compact campus means that you will not have far to travel between lectures and cafés; various refectories and bars are on hand for you to meet up with friends. Library A stunning feature of the University is our 20m Library which adds considerably to our profile in the City. It is a high-tech centre for information access in a state-of-theart, energy efficient building. Alongside an extensive collection of books and current periodicals, the Library offers a wide range of other services to ensure the best possible support for your study. TheHub It takes just 10 minutes to walk across the Coventry Campus and in the centre you ll find TheHub, our spectacular new student building, designed to ensure you live student life to the full. TheHub is home to both Student Services and the Students Union and offers a wide range of specialist support services, volunteering opportunities and access to clubs and societies. In the evening, the building becomes a vibrant venue where bars, clubs, a cinema and performing arts space delivering an excellent student experience. There s even a roof top garden to enjoy. Coventry University Technology Park An exciting development for both the University and for the City has been the creation of the 20-acre Coventry University Technology Park. It is home to the Techno Centre, a unique complex offering a focus for training, conferences and business opportunities; the Enterprise Centre, a 3m development providing dedicated accommodation for new small-and medium-sized enterprises; and the Coventry and Warwickshire New Technology Institute, which works with companies to address skills shortages in ICT and advanced technology. Sport and Recreation The University prides itself on its excellent provision for sport and recreation with a wide range of facilities and services. The Sports Centre is centrally located and offers a state-of-the-art Fitness Suite, Dance Studio, Activity Halls as well as Physiotherapy and Sports therapy treatments. There is also outdoor sports facilities at Westwood Heath. Faculty of Business, Environment and Society The Faculty of Business, Environment and Society is the largest faculty and supplies a vast range of courses covering full-time and part-time studies. Coventry Business School is located within the Faculty of Business, Environment and Society and offers many business and management courses including full-time and part-time Undergraduate, Postgraduate and PhD courses. 4 Employability Coventry Business School s Here at Coventry University we believe that graduate employability is a high priority and possibly the main reason why a student wishes to invest a considerable amount of time and money on their postgraduate studies. Three main themes are explored during the day, understanding people, communication and working as part of a successful team. 5 Company Internship All students on the Masters courses have the opportunity to apply for the Company Internship. Students completing an internship do so in place of a traditional dissertation. What are the benefits of a Company Internship? Experience firsthand the business and working culture of an organisation; Provides an opportunity to work independently on a significant, managerial issue with employer and academic guidance and support; Present and prepare a management report jointly to the employer and academic staff within the Business School; Builds confidence and develops a stronger set of personal and professional skills; Provides challenge and an opportunity to work outside your comfort zone; Develops more effective written and communication skills; Extends commercial awareness of the context of decision making; Provides an opportunity to expand business networks. What are you required to do? You will work in the host organisation for between 8-12 weeks, during this time you will undertake a research project on a real business issue identified by the organisation. How do you apply? To reflect the real business environment and as Internship students you are ambassadors of the Business School, selection onto the Company Internship requires you to undertake a competitive selection process. This has two elements: 1. Academic Requirements You must successfully complete semester one topics at the first attempt in order to be considered for an interview. 2. Selection Process Following attendance at the Employability Workshops and the Leadership/ial Lecture Series, you must submit a CV. Shortlisted students will attend an interview with a Business School Internship panel at which you will be required to deliver a short presentation on a predetermined topic. Candidates will also be required to answer a variety of questions from the panel members. Feedback is provided to all students. Marie Hardie Faculty Director of MBA Courses How is the Internship Assessed? The Company Internship represents 50 credits on MSc/MA courses and 60 credits on MBA towards the 180 credits required to be awarded the relevant Masters degree. Assessment is in three parts worth 75%, 15% and 10% respectively and require successful completion of 7000/9000 Word Management Report 2500 Word Reflective Piece Employers Assessment What sort of project might you be required to do? Some of the projects to date have considered: Strategic and Business Planning Developing Communications and Marketing Strategy Service Redesign Financial Planning Asset Management Launching a New Product in a New Country Market Sector Analysis What sort of company might you work in and where might it be? Internships are most likely to be in the UK but could take place in Europe or internationally. The university works in partnership with a range of organisations, small, medium and large, both within the private and public sector. To date students have completed projects in America, France, India, Spain, New Zealand and Cyprus. Some of the many companies have included the NHS, Jaguar LandRover, The FA Learning, Riding for the Disabled, Exclusive Roots, Streetgames, The Indian Hockey Association and Digital2. When do the Internships take place? Internships run during the 3rd and final semester of the MBA, MSc and MA courses normally between July to August for September starters and October to December for January starters. Name: John Ekambi Course: MA Advertising & Marketing Internship: Tripink Media My time as a student at Coventry University was enriched by different exciting experiences. One of the most significant was to be part of the Coventry University Internship Programme, which allowed me to complete a 6 month internship at Tripink Media in Miami. Tripink is a new mobile video advertising agency using a three wheel pink truck with 3 LCD screens to display commercial and promotional videos. Due to my passion for and my experience in online marketing and particularly social media network marketing I was in charge of developing an online marketing plan including strategies for the usage of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube as well as optimising the company website in terms of marketing design. Completing my internship in Miami allowed me to develop skills in online marketing, meet great people and also opened doors in the industry. I would recommend any student in search of new experiences to participate in the Coventry University Company Internship.

MBA Structure The Coventry Business School MBA is structured so that you are exposed to a common core of key management issues within the fields of Strategy, Marketing, Finance and Accountancy, Human Resource Management, Organisational Behaviour, Operations Management, Responsible Management and the Economic Environment of Business. Specialist subjects are provided in the 2nd semester reflecting the chosen named MBA route. In addition, all students will study Research Methods across to underpin their 3rd semester option, the highly popular Company Internship or the more traditional MBA dissertation. Choice of MBAs Coventry Business School offers a variety of MBA degrees reflecting the research and teaching strengths of the Business School staff. These are outlined in more detail on the following pages. They range from the more general to the more industry or business specific. Each has been carefully designed to cater for the career aspirations and backgrounds of the graduate student. Provided the MBA applicant has a minimum of two years work experience following their undergraduate studies and meets our other entry criteria, you can choose an MBA from our portfolio of named MBA routes. The Business School s MBA courses have been designed for individuals seeking to develop their managerial capabilities and who have middle and senior management aspirations. Hence our MBAs have been designed to enable students to study not only a generalist management course but also to enable career development in their specific area of interest or expertise. Every MBA student will study a common core of management subjects with a choice of topics being offered in the 2nd semester reflecting the specific MBA pathway chosen. All the MBA subjects are delivered by staff with specific research and industrial expertise in these areas. Work Experience MBA students must have at least two years work experience following their undergraduate education although it is expected that the majority of students will have more than two years. The average age of our MBA cohort is around 29 years of age. All the MBAs will have a strong practical and professional emphasis.

7 Coventry Business School MBA Courses MBA Course Structure MBA Courses ; 2-3 years part-time For an applicant to be considered for any of the MBA courses they must normally hold: A good 2nd class UK Honours degree (or overseas equivalent) in a related Business or Management discipline or any other discipline that is acceptable to the Business School. At least two years work experience after completing their undergraduate degree. Exceptions to the above will be considered on an individual basis. Applicants whose first language is not English must have a minimum IELTS 6.5 or TOFEL IB 88 or equivalent. However, applicants whose undergraduate degree was both taught and assessed in English many be excused IELTS or TOFEL qualifications on the condition that authenticated evidence of English as the medium of their teaching and assessment at undergraduate level can be provided. Students with less than 6.5 IELTS may be considered for all Masters degrees if they undertake a presessional English course. James Edwards MBA International Sport Management In the increasingly competitive graduate job market I believe the MBA qualification will benefit me both in the short and the long-term. In the short-term it will stand me out from the crowd but crucially the knowledge gained in the subjects will improve my aptitude within a sports marketing role. In the long-term the general business management knowledge I have learnt will assist me in managing or hopefully owning a sports marketing company of my own in the future. Pattern and Mode of MBA Attendance MBA degrees are semester based and can be studied in one of two main delivery patterns: September Start September to January February to June Semester 3 June to September OR January Start January to April May to September Semester 3 September to January MBA International Business MBA International Business is for students who wish to work in the arena of international business with an emphasis upon the processes, practicalities and the impact of globalisation. The MBA International Business helps you to evaluate the complexity of international business within a global and regional context and provides appropriate theoretical frameworks with which to analyse, support and enhance business competitiveness and global presence. MBA General Management The MBA General Management is designed for graduate students interested in progressing their career in management but who wish to study a broad range of topics and not to be restricted to one specific functional area. In the 2nd semester MBA General Management students select subjects from a list of options. Throughout the MBA General Management there is an emphasis upon leadership and strategic change and implementation. MBA Finance MBA Finance is for students wishing to have their course tailored from a financial and accounting perspective. All MBA students commence with a generic common core but in the 2nd semester MBA Finance students then specialise by studying relevant financial, accounting and investment issues from a managerial perspective. Successful MBA Finance students may also receive some exemptions should they choose to later study for professional ACCA examinations. MBA Marketing MBA Marketing is a further specialist MBA route for students who wish to customise their course from a marketing perspective. It combines generic MBA material in addition to specialist coverage of the marketing function and contemporary marketing issues. MBA Marketing topics also carry some exemptions for students wishing to study later for the professional Chartered Institute of Marketing examinations MBA Global Development and Comparative Law The first of its kind worldwide, this flagship MBA Degree in Global Development & Comparative Law (GDCL) focuses on the practitioner s inside view of globalisation and commercial diplomacy, good governance of human development issues, transcultural leadership and comparative legal traditions around world markets. Students committed to internships and career opportunities with multi-lateral organisations (e.g. the United Nations, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the African Development Bank) will benefit from an exciting, knowledge-based, solution-oriented course of study that promotes thinking locally and acting globally. I ve really been able to develop my business and team working skills by working with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, all of which are important in modern business. Furthermore I have been able to refine my experience in strategy which is critical in moving my career forward in more senior levels within business. 8 MSc Accounting and Financial Management MSc Finance The MSc Accounting and Financial Management course is aimed at graduate students wishing to advance their studies in accounting, finance and business management to a higher level. With the rapid growth of global change in all organisations, economies and societies, the need for effective practitioners of the highest quality has never been higher. The main feature of this course is that it covers BOTH advanced Accounting and Financial Management topics. This gives a certain level of flexibility to students who want to explore more before specialising in a particular area. The topics covered in the course have been carefully developed so that the following three main streams are covered: Internal Accounting and the Financial Management Environment External Financial Market Environment The link between the internal and external Accounting and Financial Management Environments The course is intended to enhance your ability to critically evaluate accounting and financial information through an in-depth study of key principles and concepts, for example financial statement analysis and valuation; advanced management accounting; corporate financial strategy. 9 MSc Investment Management MSc Banking and Finance This is a specialist course aimed at graduates who are wishing to pursue a career in the rapidly expanding financial services sector.
