2 Welcome to Coventry Business School Thank you for considering Coventry Business School and taking the time to read our undergraduate business brochure which I hope provides you with an insight into the courses that we offer. The purpose of this brochure is to provide you with information about the range of taught undergraduate courses offered at Coventry Business School. We recognise that undergraduate education is a significant step towards enhancing your career prospects and in preparing for future employment. An undergraduate degree is an advantage in the job market and we understand the importance of preparing students for the world of work. This is why we provide a variety of support and guidance to students in relation to their long or short-term placement needs and the needs and expectations of external employers. As part of this support we have our own dedicated Employability and Placements Unit located within the Faculty. It also incorporates the Department of Strategy and Applied Management, providing courses in Business, Sport and Events Management. It also has excellent links with major national and international organisations such as Ford, Nokia, major banks and Governmental agencies. In addition, the Business School enjoys close partnerships with major universities around the world, providing valuable opportunities for studying or working abroad. The Business School stresses the importance of preparing students for employment, whether in private or public sectors. Consequently we emphasise the development of skills, competencies and understanding necessary to contribute in the rapidly changing work environment. A number of Coventry University s subject areas featured in the top 50% of institutions across the UK in the recent National Student Survey. The Business subject group ranks in the top 10% across the country. The Employability and Placements Unit The Faculty of Business, Environment and Society (BES) stresses the importance of preparing students for the working environment and recognises that graduates with placement experience will, usually, gain higher paid jobs than those who have not undertaken a placement. The Employability and Placements Unit (EPU) in BES provides an invaluable service offered to all BES undergraduate students aiding their employability skills and assisting them with the transition period from study to the world of work. The service consists of long and short-term work placements, support for students during their search for placements, online support via the EPU website with regular updates of current placement vacancies, events and news, administrative support to students prior to commencing placement and the Add+vantage Scheme. The Add+vantage Scheme provides an opportunity for you to choose additional subjects as part of your degree course to develop your career prospects. It incorporates an interactive and online Employability and Learning Programme, designed to help you develop employability competencies, plan your personal and career development and enter graduate employment. You will be required to select an Add+vantage subject on each year of your taught course, this is stated in the indicative course content. You are welcome to call into the Employability and Placements Unit for guidance on the Add+vantage subjects that are available. 2gether Student Mentoring Programme in the Faculty of Business, Environment and Society In the BES Faculty we have in each department a team of trained Student Mentors available to offer support and encouragement to first year undergraduate students. The Mentoring Programme involves the development of an informal relationship between the first year students and their student mentors to support first years through this transition phase. The Student Mentors support the first years mainly by sharing similar experiences, encouraging peers in their learning and to build a sense of community on campus. Harpreet Sangha is just one of the students who have benefited from the service offered by the Employability and Placements Unit. Harpreet secured a work placement at the NHS West Midlands Primary Care Trust in Coventry for her sandwich year. 5 8 9 Alumni Profiles The BA Business Management course has given me a holistic insight into the different ways businesses manage themselves. Understanding the complexities of business has given me the confidence to walk into a room full of Senior Executives and present myself and my ideas in a professional manner. My course gave me the skills I needed to pursue a wide variety of different career options from Human Resources to Marketing, Finance and Business Strategy. After graduating I have secured my first job with a leading global research agency Millward Brown. I am a Trainee Account Coordinator that sits within a Project Management stream of Client Service and I am responsible for the day to day running of client accounts. My responsibilities include building relationships with my clients and understanding their business issues. The course is taught in a variety of ways to break up the traditional lecture-led format. The use of games and studentled lectures provide a different form of teaching as well as improving personal presentation skills when having to lead a topic yourself. Theo Shomuyiwa BA Economics Phillipe Rawson BA Business Management When I graduated from University I joined WHSmith as a Marketing Graduate Trainee. I spent 10 years in different marketing and trading roles, leaving in 2004 as a Commercial Director. I then joined Shop Direct Group in 2004 (who are my current employer), joining as Brand Director. Over the past 4 years I have held four different positions and am now on the Shop Direct Board as Retail Trading Director having spent time as a Marketing Director where I led the brand development and Advertising for the Littlewoods and Littlewoods Direct brands. Gary Kibble BA Business Studies Claire Nerurker BA Marketing My course has a variety of topics, all of which I found very interesting. I particularly enjoyed the advertising subject in both the first and second year. In these topics I had the opportunity to work in groups for coursework assignments which I really enjoyed as I love working alongside others. I made lots of friends whilst being at University and met many interesting people of all cultures. Kayleigh Blackstock BA Advertising & Business Throughout the study terms we had a combination of lectures, seminars and variety of workshops for each subject every week. In the lecture sessions we got together with other students from other courses and in the seminar sessions we are split up into smaller groups to give us further understanding of what has been taught in the lectures. Workshops are more specific to the subjects which involve using different programmes on the computers. Iraj Saidi BA Accounting & Finance The BA Sport Marketing course allows you to acquire lots of business knowledge and because of the varied teaching methods there will never be a dull moment. I decided to do my dissertation on Database Marketing in the English Premier League; I was unsure on some aspects of this but my lecturers were there for me every step of the way. Joe Etchells BA Sport Marketing Since graduating in November 2007 top of my class with a First class honours in Business and HRM, I am now working for an international project management, construction and engineering company based in London as a HR Advisor. I joined the company on the graduate programme which provides career development through rotating around the various HR functions, with fantastic opportunities to travel and work overseas on some of the world s most prestigious and challenging civil and infrastructure projects of our time. I am also being sponsored by the company to study for a Masters in HRM with CIPD accreditation, further assisting my ambition to become a HR Manager. Emma Keeble BA Human Resource Management

Your course initially provides an overview of the main areas all managers need to understand in a modern business. You will be taught by commercially aware academic staff with expertise in all the business disciplines. They do research and work with companies on projects. This feeds into their teaching to make sure that what you study is current and relevant to the employers you will work for. Business Management is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply for students who decide to specialise in Supply Chain Management. If you specialise in supply chain in the final year of the course, you can apply for full membership of this professional body on graduation. Business Management is a well established brand with employers and provides the basis for a successful business career. One of the aspects of the course particularly valued by employers (who are included in our course reviews) is the fact you will have a good grounding in all the main functional areas of business before specialising in the areas that will support your career choice. The degree provides a structured course of study including Marketing, Finance and Accounting, Strategy and Supply Chain Management. In addition, our close relationship with SAP (the largest enterprise software provider in the world) allows you to gain valuable experience using leading business software to support your studies and transition into work. Course Length: 3 years full-time, part-time option available The comprehensive business education that you achieve, coupled with the option of specialising in particular functional areas in the latter stages of the course, allow a tremendous variety of career opportunities. Many of our graduates are now in senior positions in industry and the public sector. Work experience is something employers are increasingly looking for in the graduates they employ. In the last three years, over 90% of the students from this course went straight into graduate level jobs after their graduation. With a BA in Business Studies you will graduate not only with a business management degree but practical experience of working in a business or organisation on a real project for up to a year. In recent years our students have successfully completed business placements with organisations such as Bosch, Xerox, IBM, Rolls Royce, GM Motors, Wallis, GIST and Volkswagen. Students have also worked on placements based in Small to Medium sized businesses and local or regional organisations.
