Profile and Contact way of the Teachers WANG HONGWEI Dr. Wang Hongwei, associate professor, deputy director of the Department of Management Science and Engineering, AIS member. He joined the School of Economics and Management in 2004, participated in a one-month seminar for case study at Harvard Business School in the summer of 2008, and worked as a Research Associate at the Department of Computing of Hong Kong Polytechnic University for six months in His current research interests include management information systems, business intelligence and ontology modeling, and logistics information system. Dr. Wang has currently hosted three major academic projects, two of them are funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the other one is supported by the Ministry of Education of China. Besides that, he has also attended another 3 research projects as Co-Principal Investigator. In the last five years, Dr. Wang published more than 50 papers in international journals or conferences, such as JDCTA, IJMSO, LNAI, Key Engineering Materials Journal, etc. and 23 papers are indexed by SCI/EI. He also published several books in Chinese as co-author, such as "management information system"(higher Education Press, 2006), "e-government" (Tongji University Press, 2009), "Logistics Information System" (Tsinghua University Press, 2010). Now he 1
2 serves as reviewer for a couple of journals, such as IJIIDS, Chinese Operation Research, Systems Engineering-Theory Methodology Application. Reserch interests: DSS, supply chain management, simulation of multiple intelligent agents. Course Description Information, being considered as an important resource, has become an essential element for corporations to improve efficiency and gain competitive advantage. Since it can be applied in nearly all the operations processes, information system can be seen as an enabler for business reform, making dynamic integration with the value chain of enterprises. Therefore, it is a significant challenge for management to exploit information resource efficiently and use information system rationally, in order to support the working and decision making of operational, management and strategic level of the corporations, so that competitive advantage will be obtained. This course is mainly focused on helping students to comprehend the social-technological perspective of information system architecture based on globalization and sustainable development, to gain overall knowledge of information systems, such as TPS, MIS, DSS and EIS, along with the corresponding transformation of organization structures and management methods in real management activities, 2
3 and to analyze a variety of problems, relating to each phase of the development of information system (planning, analyzing, designing, implementing and operating), correctly and accurately. 3. Course Objectives and Requirements 1) Understanding the competitive environment, the crucial value of information resource for corporations, and the strategic role of information systems. 2) Gaining insight of the profound effect of information technology on management thinking, management methods and competitive patterns, and the interaction between information systems and organizations. 3) Comprehending information system architecture in the social-technological perspective. 4) Grasping the basic theory of information system, data management technology and network technique. 5) Understanding the basic characteristic of several commonly-used information systems, such as TPS, MIS, DSS, EIS, KMS and OAS. 6) Grasping the basic idea of information system planning and being capable of proposing a suitable plan of developing information system in a certain company. 7) Understanding the characteristics and the main tasks of each phrase of system developing life circle (SDLC). 8) Being capable of taking information security precautions and perfecting information security system according to the safety problems in information systems. 4. Teaching Methods 1) Combination of classroom study and case study This course requires strong theoretical abilities and practical skills, therefore, both theory study and case study are necessary. The theory study is mainly focused on elementary concepts and theories, while case study is a series of practical practice under particular circumstances, which is a problem-solving process and meant to combine the theory taught in classroom with practice. 2) Interactive teaching and studying This method including group discussion, presentation, class discussion and professors final summaries and conclusions, initiates interactions among all participants. It is an innovative teaching approach that alter the traditional ones, making students more interested in what they are about to learn and more impressive with what they have learnt. 3) Various forms of assignment Contrary to the simple tasks based on questions and answers, new forms of assignment are employed, like project design, presentation, lecture and report, which are more close to the real business environment. 4) Open teaching condition External resources will be bought in, according to the course requirements. CIOs of famous firms are invited to give lectures on the real development case of management information system, in order to reinforce students understanding of the application of MIS. Meanwhile, professors at home and abroad are employed to give lectures on certain topics, providing advanced knowledge for students. 6. Learning Outcomes Expected Category Learning Outcomes Master the basic concept, theory and method of information system and information Knowledge and Understanding resource Understanding the social-technological characteristics of management information system, and the relationship between informationization and management Master the definitions, objectives and basic processing activities of the 6 kinds of information systems, and be familiar with the basic function modules in ERP. Familiar with the basic content and methods of BPM and BPR Understanding the techniques for information resource management: Database, 6
7 Data Warehouse and Data Mining Master the basic methods of informationization strategy and IT planning. Understanding the major tasks in the each step of system development life cycle. Understanding the characteristics and development future of cross-organization and cross-culture information systems in the context of globalization and sustainable development Have the ability to make strategy for information resource and information systems Intellectual Skills Practical Skills (Managerial Skills) Transferable Skills and Personal Qualities planning based on the idea of globalization and sustainable development. Have the ability to appropriately applying scientific management theory and method to information management with strict attitude and scientific methods. Have the ability to critically analyze the problems in information resource and information systems management and provide proper suggestions. Fully understanding the particularity of information resource and information systems management, precisely master the development of meaning, theory and technology in this area, and build the revolutionary idea and innovative consciousness. Developing the ability to find and extract problems in operation management, and make solutions based on information technology. Besides that, propose feasible solutions for the organization behavior problems in informationization within the company. Developing the abstract thinking ability, information systems logics and modeling ability to convert the users information needs into function, process and data model of information systems. Assignment Requirements Select the typical cases in your work by yourself, combining with the related theory and knowledge of information resource and information systems management, and describe, analyze as well as evaluate the existing problems, and put forward some solutions and alternatives. Requirements 1) Collect this case background information and discuss about the problems above 2) Form the groups, each group consists of 6-8 students. 3) Do presentation in the class, each group need to submit PPT and the WORD (one copy of the electronic version and paper version) 4) Each group should prepare before class carefully, please.
