The School focuses on meeting the increasing demands of software engineering professionals and provides high-end and practical software engineers. It adopts advanced teaching methods (such as project-driven, case study, learning by doing), which ensure students to learn new knowledge and gain practical experience in the school. For most courses, course projects are used to replace written exams. More than 70% of textbooks are in English. More than half of the courses are taught bilingual while 35% of them are offered entirely in English. Students are expected to become skillful software engineers with updated techniques and cutting-edge knowledge. As an internationalized institute, we are active in promoting cooperation and exchanges with other countries. The development of a state ideology based on Confucianism (100BC) and a common system of writing (200BC) both strengthened Chinese civilization. Politically, China alternated between periods of political union and disunion, and between periods of political union and disunion, and was often conquered by external ethnicities, of which many were eventually assimilated into the Chinese identity. These cultural and political influences are decisive to Chinese identity. These cultural and political influences from many parts of Asia as well as successive waves of immigration and emigration merged to create the familiar image of Chinese culture and people today. 2. China s Socio-Economic Development This course intends to provide a comprehensive overview of socio-economic analysis of China s economic reform and development achievements and experiences. The major contents include, among other topics, macroeconomic analysis of reform and opening up program, banking reform from administrative control to regulator framework, development of stock markets, policy environment of the state-owned enterprises and township-village enterprises, shareholding experiment, modern enterprise system, and the state-owned enterprises reform, from export promotion strategy to import-export balanced trade strategy, China s access to the WTO and new foreign trade policy, foreign exchange reserve, going global, regional policy differentials under the strategy of economic opening, agricultural productivity and construction of new village towns. Another new feature of China s development is that in addition to economic reform, the political system reform, social system reform 15
16 and cultural system reform are all under way. These topics will be given certain proportion of lecturing in the course. It is hoped that the course will provide a foundation of China s socio-economic knowledge for the students, who want to further their academic study of China s economy or to prepare for their living and business career in China. 3. The Shape and Growth of the Town & Village in China China is one of the oldest places in the world where urban civilization was born, and Chinese civilization has a profound influence over the East Asian region for a very long span of years. Being the fundamental knowledge and a basic research, the study of the construction and development of Chinese towns & villages will help the international students to lay a solid foundation for their understanding of the East Asian civilization. Many historical records tell us the stories of foreign students studying in China more than a thousand years ago. Therefore, this course will start from the mechanism in the sprout of urban civilization worldwide, the ancient philosophy of China, the principle of town & village construction, the basic urban patterns in the old Chinese Empire, describe the general urban phenomenon and the inherent cultural system in China and the main East Asian countries. At the same time, this course will analyze the town & village development in Yangtze River Delta in general, and Shanghai the city in particular. Together with the introduction of the cultural heritage protection, the planning of 2010 Expo and the present urban reform, this course will build a platform containing both professional and elementary knowledge in the history of Chinese town & village, in the urban planning of Shanghai for all the international students in different spheres. 4. Sustainable Development in China Based on environmental ethics, this course introduces the rationales of human-oriented and harmonic development with the nature. With the most influential international concepts and principles, the initiation and development of sustainable development theories are analyzed, with the challenges facing China: 16
17 population, resource and environment, economic development and climate change influences. Details are given in the respective chapters based on international experience and Chinese practice for population and urbanization, energy and industry structure, land and agriculture, water resource and management, environmental management and policy, green economic accounting, and climate change adaptation etc. The students are required to observe human oriented principle and harmonic development with the nature, to understand the theories and development of sustainable development. With the study of the chapters on population, urbanization, energy, industry structure, land and agriculture, water resource, environmental management and policy, and climate change adaptation, the students should know the problems and challenges that China faces, as well as the efforts and achievements. 5. Intercultural Communication With economic globalization, the economic border between countries blurs. This has triggered frequent business mobility across the world and ever-increasing interactions among peoples of different cultures. This has given rise to the need of learning how to communicate effectively in a cross-cultural setting. This course aims to familiarize students with the essential terms and basic theories in intercultural communication, and give a detailed analysis of the value system of Chinese culture, which is key to understanding the social and economical conditions as well as foreign policies of modern China. Case study will be employed to illustrate failures in Sino-foreign communication. It is hoped that by taking this course, international students will have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and will learn to deal more effectively with Chinese counterparts. 6 Cultural Heritage Conservation in China This course mainly introduces the conditions and characteristics of architecture, landscape, towns and village historic cultural heritage conservation, covering world heritages, historic conservation areas in towns, traditional towns and villages, cultural 17

This course offers philosophies and methods regarding conservation and reuse of diverse cultural heritages in China in the recent years by several themes in the form of case studies. To let students know the condition of historic cultural heritages in Chinese towns and philosophies, methods and typical cases of historic cultural heritages in modern China and to let students fully understand the characteristics and special issues facing of historic heritage in China. 7 China s Foreign Affairs and International Relations The course describes the major elements of Chinese foreign policy today, in the context of their development since We seek to understand the security-based rationale of policy as well as other factors -- organizational, cultural, perceptual, and so on -- that influence Chinese foreign policy. We look at China s relations with various countries and regions, as well as Chinese policy toward key functional issues in international affairs. We look at how the rise of China is affecting global power relations and how other actors are responding. The course pays attention to the application of different international relations theories to the problems we study, and also takes an interest in policy issues facing decision-makers in China as well as those facing decision-makers in other countries who deal with China. 8 Chinese Intellectual Property Protection This course introduces the legal system of protection for intellectual property rights and the enforcement and judicial practices in China, including the procedures and requirements of patent application, trademark registration and copyright recording in China; the rights of patentees, trademark holders and copyright owners according to 18
19 Chinese IP laws; the remedies for infringements of patent, trademark and copyright through Chinese administrative and judicial organs. Besides, the students will attend the trial on IP case in Shanghai People s Courts and visit the IP Administration of Shanghai. 19
