1 College Nursing Program RN REFRESHER COURSE INFORMATION Introduction and Overview The RN Refresher Program is a partnership between College Nursing Program and the Jewish Vocational Service (JVS). Nursing faculty from College will be responsible for developing and implementing a tenweek course consisting of nursing theory, skills review, and applied clinical practice in an acute care hospital. The theory portion will include 48 hours of lecture and discussion. The will include 48 hours of demonstration and return demonstration of skills currently used in health care practice today. Theory and Skills reviews are designed to strengthen and support current nursing practice in the United States. The practicum will total 160 hours at Alameda County Medical Center (Highland Hospital) located in Oakland, CA, and will provide excellent exposure to the work characteristic of a busy general medical-surgical hospital. Students will be supervised by experienced registered nurses currently employed in nursing practice. A representative of JVS will also offer individualized coaching, referral to resources, and job placement assistance during the course. This RN Refresher program is part of a larger project called the Immigrant Nurse-Re-entry program and is geared toward preparing foreign-trained nurses for employment in the United States health care workforce. Course Information The approximately 236 hours in the RN Refresher Course begins with two weeks of orientation to nursing concepts and skills, including an orientation to the acute care hospital, and an intensive skills practice. Students will be oriented to clinical skills commonly used in the acute care hospital. It is expected that the student will familiarize him/herself with the details of carrying out these skills in the actual hospital setting. Following the orientation weeks, the student will then progress to applying concepts learned in theory and skills lab to the actual clinical setting. The first four weeks of clinical practice will be conducted in a general medical-surgical setting. The students will be divided into two groups of ten each. Each group will have a clinical instructor to it for supervision. The second four weeks will include experiences with 1:1 mentoring by a registered nurse in the medical-surgical setting. The assignment will also involve students being placed on days and evenings. The objective of this preceptorship assignment is to be gradually introduced to the type of role expected of the registered nurse in the United States. This mentoring experience will be coordinated by the same clinical instructors the students have had in the first four weeks of their experience. All clinical assignments will be for two seven-hour shifts per week. In the first four weeks, the assignments will be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (day shift). In the second four weeks, the assignments will be on two of the following days: Tuesdays, Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday.
