1 COURSE NUMBER: N199 COURSE TITLE: Fundamentals of Nursing COURSE DESCRIPTION: Fundamentals of Nursing is a theoretical and clinical course which provides an introduction to nursing and patient care concepts. Emphasis is placed on the knowledge, clinical skills, and attitudes needed to provide safe, quality patient-centered care. The theoretical foundation for basic assessment and nursing skills is presented along with an introduction to the nursing process, clinical competencies, and psychosocial skills. Students are given opportunities to practice and demonstrate beginning skills in a clinical laboratory and use these skills in the clinical setting to meet basic physical and psychosocial individual patient needs. PREREQUISITES: All pre-entry required 1 st year courses COURSE NUMBER: N250 COURSE TITLE: Nursing Professional in Healthcare TOTAL HOURS: Theory - 45 Hours COURSE DESCRIPTION: Nursing Professional in Healthcare is a theoretical course in which the student develops an understanding of the role of the nurse in the healthcare system. The profession's historical development is explored. Health and wellness concepts are introduced. Standards of practice, accountability, legal and regulatory factors as they relate to nursing practice are discussed as are ethical principles and cultural competence influences on healthcare. The core competencies essential to function competently as a professional nurse are introduced as well as genetic and genomic principles. PREREQUISITES: All pre-entry required first year courses

2 COURSE NUMBER: N201 COURSE TITLE: Adult Medical Surgical Nursing I COURSE DESCRIPTION: Adult Medical-Surgical Nursing I is a theoretical and clinical course that focuses on the care of adult clients with health alterations that require medical and/or surgical intervention. Emphasis is placed on utilization of the nursing process and development of critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills to plan for and care for patients with alterations in fluid, electrolyte, and acid base balance, immunity, gastrointestinal, and musculoskeletal alterations, diabetes, and male and female reproductive system disorders. Concepts of patient-centered care, communication, evidence-based practice, informatics, safety, and professionalism are integrated throughout the course. Clinical experiences provide the student an opportunity to apply theoretical concepts and implement safe, high quality patient-centered care to adults in a variety of settings. PREREQUISITES: N199; N250 COURSE NUMBER: N251 COURSE TITLE: Health Assessment TOTAL HOURS: Theory - 30 hrs. Laboratory - 15 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides the framework for preparing students to perform comprehensive health assessments on patients across the lifespan. Emphasis is placed on taking a thorough nursing history, performing physiological, psychological, sociological, cultural and spiritual assessments, as well as identification of stressors and health risks. Laboratory experiences provide a hands-on opportunity to practice assessment skills on Simulators and each other. PREREQUISITES: N199, N250

3 COURSE NUMBER: N202 COURSE TITLE: Adult Medical Surgical Nursing II CREDIT HOURS: 8 (4 Theory + 4 Clinical Laboratory) TOTAL HOURS: Theory - 60 hrs Clinical 188 hrs COURSE DESCRIPTION: Adult Medical-Surgical Nursing II is a theoretical and clinical course that focuses on the care of adult clients with health alterations that require medical and/or surgical intervention. Emphasis is placed on utilization of the nursing process and development of critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills to plan for and care for patients with alterations in oxygenation and tissue perfusion, and neurologic, renal or endocrine function. Concepts of patient-centered care, communication, evidence-based practice, informatics, safety, and professionalism are integrated throughout the course. There is a clinical immersion at the conclusion of the course to facilitate integration and completion of the first year clinical competencies. PREREQUISITES: N201; N251 COURSE NUMBER: B297 COURSE TITLE: Introduction to Pharmacology TOTAL HOURS: Theory 45 hrs. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Biology 297 is designed as a patient oriented learning experience for the student nurse who will apply previously acquired nursing and science knowledge to the study of medications and their effect on patients. This course will incorporate the principles of safe medication administration determined by The Joint Commission and National Patient Safety Goals. The course will be taught using case studies that highlight the role of the nurse as a care provider, collaborator, and educator in medication administration. The selected cases will demonstrate the interrelationship between pathophysiology, diagnostic studies and pharmacologic intervention as well as the role of the nurse in clinical reasoning and judgment. The student is expected to research each case study prior to class and to participate in class discussion. PREREQUISITES: N201; N251

4 COURSE NUMBER: N301 COURSE TITLE: Nursing Care of the Family COURSE DESCRIPTION: Nursing Care of the Family is an evidence-based theoretical and clinical course which utilizes the nursing process to pediatric and childbearing patients. The clinical experiences are correlated with theoretical content and include experiences in the birthing suite, post-partum and pediatric units. Emphasis is placed on the formation of clinical reasoning and on the nurse s professional role in interprofessional practice by providing safe, quality nursing care. Developing an understanding of the effects of cultural diversity in the care of the patient population is also a focus. The student uses the principles of teaching/learning to aid in health formation for the pediatric and childbearing patient. COURSE NUMBER: N302 COURSE TITLE: Psychiatric/Mental Health and Community Nursing COURSE DESCRIPTION: Psychiatric/Mental Health & Community Health Nursing is a theoretical and clinical course which focuses on providing supportive care to patients/clients and families. Psychiatric/mental health concepts related to the nurse-patient relationship, therapeutic communication, recognizing maladaptive coping and fostering adaptive coping skills and behaviors are integrated throughout the course. Community health concepts, community resources and roles of the community health nurse are explored. Clinical experiences provide the student with opportunities to apply theoretical concepts and implement safe patient/family/community-centered care to patients/clients in inpatient and outpatient psychiatric/mental health and select community-based health facilities.

5 COURSE NUMBER: N303 COURSE TITLE: Adult with Complex Health Problems COURSE DESCRIPTION: Adult with Complex Health Problems is a theoretical and clinical course which focuses on advanced concepts of nursing care as they relate to adult patients with complex, multisystem alterations in health. Emphasis is placed on implementing time management and organizational skills while managing the care of patients with multiple needs and collaborating with the interdisciplinary team. Complex clinical skills, as well as priority setting, clinical reasoning, and tenets of legal and ethical practice, are integrated throughout the course. Clinical experiences provide the student an opportunity to apply theoretical concepts and implement safe care to patients in the critical care units and the Emergency Trauma Center. PREREQUISITES: ALL intermediate-level courses COURSE NUMBER: N357 COURSE TITLE: Introduction to Nursing Informatics TOTAL HOURS: Theory 30 hrs. Laboratory 15 hrs. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is structured to provide students with an overview of nursing informatics; concepts of computers and the internet; principles and practices related to the evaluation of health care software applications; and a review of the healthcare information systems. Throughout each unit, attention will be given to the ethical issues related to the use of technology in health care; trends in health care technology; and the role of the nurse informaticist in developing and evaluating health care applications and systems.

6 COURSE NUMBER: N200W COURSE TITLE: Understanding and Applying Nursing Research TOTAL HOURS: Theory - 45 Hours COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an introduction to nursing research and its application to nursing practice. The history of the topic is discussed with progression to current participation in evidencebased practice. Course content includes terminology, research designs, data analysis, and dissemination of research results through publication and presentation. The differentiation between quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method research are explored. Emphasis is placed on the ethical nature of research. Students are expected to identify research questions relevant to clinical practice and to become beginning consumers of research by learning the steps to critique nursing research. COURSE NUMBER: N350 COURSE TITLE: Nursing Leadership and Management TOTAL HOURS: Theory - 45 Hours COURSE DESCRIPTION: Nursing Leadership and Management focuses on the concepts, theories, responsibilities and roles of leadership and management. The differentiation between leadership and management are explored. Emphasis is placed on the development of leadership in influencing the nursing profession and society through policy regulation with a global outreach. Recognition of the significance of professional, ethical, regulatory and legal codes within the context of nursing practice is addressed. Assessment of the nursing profession s responsibility for self-regulation, delegation and accountability is necessary in order to maximize patient care in relation to clinical practice guidelines and outcome standards. Managerial issues related to healthcare delivery systems are discussed with regard to resource allocation and distribution. Concepts of communication, generational differences, critical thinking and cultural competence are addressed throughout the course. PREREQUISITES: All intermediate-year courses, N200W, N357

7 COURSE NUMBER: N370 COURSE TITLE: Clinical Capstone TOTAL HOURS: Faculty advisor 6 hours Clinical 112 hours COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is a clinical preceptorship that will include experiences similar to those students are likely to confront as they enter the workforce as newly employed registered nurses. The preceptorship is a 1:1 relationship between an experienced registered nurse preceptor and the nursing student. This relationship supports the role transformation of students and promotes clinical competence at patient bedside. The course is a synthesis of theories and concepts for professional nursing practice with a focus on evolution and transition in diverse settings within a context of emerging societal issues and trends. Students will practice the essential role development skills of communication, collaboration, negotiation, delegation, coordination, and evaluation of interdisciplinary work.
