Some content abstracted from David Wilde (AARNET) Evolving the Global Network Architecture Xing LI, CERNET James Williams, Internet2 CANS - September 2014
Purpose Purpose Provide information about the creation/evolution of the GNA. Explain how the GNA will move forward. Solicit your input and participation. 2
GNA - origins
GNA So what started work on the GNA? Initiative: Internet2 CERNET NORDUnet Janet Global NREN CEO Forum 15 x CEOs. Based on G20 model l Limited/informal global NREN strategy coordination existed prior to 2012 l Initiative by Internet2, CERNET, NORDUnet and Janet to organize strategic dialogue l Initial participant selection based on R&E stats, smaller group, G20 model Goal: Seamless global services delivery for users in R&E 4
GNA Global NREN CEO Forum: four initiatives Global NREN CEO Forum Global Realtime Communications exchange Global services delivery Federated identity management GNA Established: Geneva, September
GNA GNA GNA Vision: To describe an inclusive, collaborative Next Gen intercontinental R&E network infrastructure with a 5 to 10 year horizon Initial document by Xing Li (CERNET) James Williams (Internet2) 6
GNA - overview
8 GNA artist s impression Credit Mian Usman (DANTE)
GNA - organization
GNA Two groups established in May 2013 GNA Architecture group Co-chairs: James Williams Internet2 Erik-Jan Bos - NORDUnet Executive action team Chair: Peter Elford - AARNET Output: Dec 2013 CEO forum paper July 2014 FAQ and update 10
GNA Architecture group working on three areas GNA Architecture group Executive action team Operations+Security <jgw> Technology +Topology <mu> Services <ej-b> Provide material to engage with funders 11
GNA (Architecture Group) - approach
GNA Transition September 2013 R&E bandwidth 13 Source: Mian Usman (DANTE)
GNA GNA Architecture Group Direction High-level, focused on long-term goals (5-10 yr) Looking at infrastructure and research trends, not just at technologies Develop three areas (Operations + Security; Technology +Topology; Services) Use ANA-100G as a pathfinder project Coordinating funding in smart ways via EAT 14
GNA GNA Communicate and consult broadly Test ideas with broader audience Solicit further input & guidance at international events: e.g. APAN; I2 Global Summit; TERENA Network Architects Workshops TNC2014 May 2014 <DW> APAN38 August 2014 <JGW> CANS September 2014 <JGW> GLIF Queenstown, Sept-Oct
Engage the community Engage other networking efforts: Involve other efforts and ideas such as the developing ESnet international network, the NSF IREN planning and the EC Horizon 2020 efforts. And, of course, the Chinese Internet development efforts. Formally engage the community: At CANS At the Internet2 Global Summit At the TNC meeting At APAN At 16
GNA GNA infrastructure approach l l Greenfield approach... but leveraging: Existing and planned subsea cables Research and big science installations Advanced R&E networks & their BCPs Yielding... Powerful network substrate: fat pipes GREX (Global R&E exchange) Provisioning and operational tools & systems Overlay networks 17
GNA GNA implementation Physical infrastructure: no big bang scenario Slow start (low hanging fruit first) Gradual phasing in No-one left behind national, regional, global consultation Transport substrate: progressive automation First: Manual (horizon: 5 years) e.g. GN3plus SA2+GLIF+SDN work important Later: Automatic (horizon: 10 years) 18
GNA ANA-100G : GNA pathfinder 19
GNA ANA-100G : GNA pathfinder production ready Q GXP WIX 20
21 The ANA-100G is interesting but how does that apply to CANS (US-China)??
CERNET/CSTNET participation in GNA LD 10G BJ 10G LA 10G HK 1. CERNET/CSTNET have internal 100G/10G backbones 2. CERNET/CSTNET IX in BJ, HK and LA will participate in GNA via current 10G links 3. Orient+ 10G link may participate in GNA (agreement is required)
GNA moving forward
GNA Evolution not a new network The GNA and the Global Network (GNet) are less about a physical network and more about defining a framework for national networks and exchange points to participate in a global network. The GNet will be a collaboration or federation of existing networks/exchange points. The GNA will be the framework or set of rules that organizations agree to follow to participate in the GNet. 24
Some examples from Ops+Security Federated Operations/Security Model Guiding Concepts Develop a data/health template (management functions) to be applied to all physical devices and services Be minimally invasive. Strive for uniformity, but not at the expense of participation. 25
Ops+Sec Management Functions Some of the functions may have to be globally organized, and made transparent to all, to create the basis for a solid high-quality service. Other functions just need to be organized locally, as they do not have a global impact. The following slide represents a picture of how this might be structured. 26
27
Operational Functions Standards Real time data Reporting Availability Management Global Global Global Incident Management Global Global Global Change Management Global Local Local Capacity Management Global Local Local Security Management Global Global Local Reporting Management Global Global Global Provisioning Management Global Global Local Vendor Management Global Local Local 28
How to participate!!! We need your participation. The framework we are developing will only be as good as the intellectual input creating it. The GNA is a technical group. The EAT is a policy group. For the GNA: You need a strong technical area of expertise (senior network architects) You need to be able to commit to working on GNA activities, attending GNA video conferences and a yearly(?) GNA face-to-face. You need a commitment of your time and financial support from your CIO 29
How to participate!!! I am happy to answer questions about participation and to discuss further the details and requirements. Stop me in the hallway or just drop me an . williams@internet2.edu 30
