Now that everything has gone high-tech and digital, employers are expecting that their ;would be employees have the right skills to do the job. Having a basic knowledge will help, but it is not an assurance to get regularized. What is important is that you can deliver good results, perform well and work diligently with others.to deliver the highest standard of service, one must develop the proper mindset and possess the basic skills needed to carry out assigned work loads. At the top of the list of employees are usually the following: communication skills, integrity and honesty. These are followed closely by the following: interpersonal skills, teamwork skills, and motivation / initiative among others.these are also the exact same skills that need to be inherent to Project Managers, as well as their team members. Having the right skills and work attitude will definitely put your career at the highest of highs. Using project management skills will also result to:(a)efficient work - When your project management skills were already enhanced, this means that you know how to do efficient work with limited time constraints. At the end of a project, you get to retain all the best practices you have displayed and in turn, will lead to efficient use of resources. PMP PMI: The Project Management Institute Many have asked on the nature of the Project Management Institute, which is more commonly known and refered to as PMI. It is sad to note that only the people in the world of Project Management are able to understand its importance in the quest to ensure the maintenance of the quality and credibility of the Project Managers. It is a very crucial organization, which is considered and accepted as a globally recognized Certification in the world of Project Management. In fact, its Certification Examinations are being used and outlined as benchmarks by the all Project Managers. They have also been known as to having implemented and offered one of the toughest Certification 6

7 Examinations. In its entirety, the PMI offers three levels of Certification Examination for Project Managers. These Examinations differ in terms of the levels of the questions, toughness and ranking. The first is given to members of Project Management teams, while the seconds are for the Project Manager themselves. The third is considered as the hardest and is named as Program Management Professional and is offered to Project Managers, who seek the last, highest and the hardest form of Certification in Project Management. They are most often to be found in the top echelons of the Business itself and while it is certainly the hardest and highest form, the second level of Certification, which is the Project Management Professional or PMP, is currently the most sought after Certification. And is originally and critically based on the standards set under the PMP Examination Specification, which is in turn made by the PMI in Differentiating Project Management Objectives from Project Management Goals Project Management Metrics is often based nowadays on the EVM system, which stands for earned value measurement. The metrics themselves that fall under EVM are: schedule performance index, schedule variance, estimate at completion, cost performance index, and cost variance.this does not mean that Project Management Metrics are limited to those listed above - actually, metrics may surpass the list given because Project Management initiators need to answer certain basic questions about the project in order to determine what metrics to measure it against.the questions could be: Is customer satisfaction monitoring at a mature level in the internal organizational system, to allow metrics for this to be used? Can product requirements be traced in the system, even if they are quite complex and numerous? Does the organization need to acquire special test equipment for this purpose? Is support infrastructure necessary as well? How are the environments where the product will be employed be thoroughly defined? Are the product design requirement parameters stable or unstable? Have the system and sub-system tests been enumerated completely? Have decision makers been able to create a thorough issue tracking and failure evaluation system? Does the project face any risks, and if so, has the Risk Management system been upgraded over time?when adequate Project Management Metrics have been listed down, there should also be an effort to determine the indicators that will alert the Project Manager when he/she should initiate corrective action. It is believed that with the right information gleaned in a timely fashion from the metrics, the project team should find Project Implementation to be successful.when we talk about Project Management Objectives, we could be following the system denoted by the acronym S.M.A.R.T. The letters of the acronym stand for the adjectives Specific, Measurable (or perhaps evaluable) achievement, Achievable/Acceptable, Realistic, and then Time-terminated/-bounded activities.basically, when we talk about project management objectives, we are trying to clearly state the purpose of the project we are undertaking or what it should be able to achieve over a certain period of time. 7

8 Inevitably, talking about objectives should be associated with the potential business value of the project to our organization. A project management goal differs from a project management objective, even if both are used in one and the same project. You may say a project management goal will define the holistic context in which the project will exist and attempt to achieve its purpose, while staying aligned with business goals. On the other hand, we also have a project management objective which breaks down the goal into definite measurable achievements (like creation of a particular product and/or service) which are the tangible results of undertaking such a project.a project management goal may be worded so broadly and have such a comprehensive meaning that it may be achievable only through successive projects being implemented. Some say that if you can define your project management goal and then accomplish it within one project cycle, then perhaps you set your management goal too low and should have defined it as a project management objective instead.while a project management goal may have abstract and broadly-worded language, a project management objective ought to adhere to the S.M.A.R.T. System previously mentioned. Thus, a project management objective would have more concrete proof of being accomplished, compared to the project management goal. Though the steps in Project Management have been clearly defined by the Program Management Institute, unfortunately, there are still quite a few project managers who have not been formally trained in these Project Management concepts or who have even been exposed to them. Sometimes project managers may be trained in PMI standards but then eventually revert back to their old bad habits in management. 8

9 This only proves that for Project Management PMP PMI accreditation to be fruitful, it has to be practiced continuously and religiously - otherwise the old management systems are adhered to and the same poor results keep cropping up. IT Project Management Job Demands IT project management is an essential part of today s business industry. Everyday, more and more people are using company IT resources in their business transactions and managing IT workload can be a strenuous project for the IT department. IT professions today are very much in demand in the job market.companies these days are always in the lookout for people who can handle IT project management job for their company. Project management tasks need people who can manage multiple projects in the fastest possible time with the least possible cost. This means bigger productivity with greater efficiency and least cost. A very challenging job for the IT management team. The individual must know how to multi task to effectively carry out various tasks in IT project management. The person must know how to prioritize, manage, plan and execute new client projects. Designing and facilitating procedures for evaluation of IT projects are also included in the responsibilities of IT project manager. The person must know how to effectively communicate the development, status and issues of the external and internal stakeholders. To be able to get a job in IT project management or to be a project manger in particular, you need to have 7-10 years of experience on this field. Leadership and project management skills are required to get a hold of this job. Duties Of The Project Management Director Project management is the successful completion of a project requirement through the proper application of knowledge, best practices, skills, tools and techniques in the most efficient and cost effective way. The project management director is the person responsible for accomplishing the required goals and objectives through careful initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and control. 9

10 The project management director is also responsible for the overall accountability of the project management and will provide direction, leadership and project roles to team members. It is assumed that the project management director already has acquired knowledge of the processes of project management including the identification of requirements, establishment of specific, measurable, achievable, reasonable and time- bound objectives, balancing the demands of the project s scope, time, and cost, and the reporting and documentation of specific action plans on the various issues, concerns and expectations of the stakeholders.it is also expected that the project management director has expert familiarity in the different knowledge areas of project management which includes integration, scope, time, cost, quality, human resource, communications, risk, and procurement.part of the duties and responsibilities of the project management director is making the team understand and use the different areas of expertise as described in the Project Management Body of Knowledge. He should be skilled in influencing the team, driving their behavior, and aligning the process towards the successful completion of the project according to the standards set by the project management plan.being the project management director, having a Project Management Professional certification is essential and his experience in continuous improvements should be applied in any project that he directs. Project Management, its definition and existence In business, people with creative minds are necessary to come up with new innovations towards improvement or development of a particular service. As ideas are brought to management, these are studied and evaluated. If management feels that the idea can be worked out, then study of the proposal is undertaken. This idea becomes a project to be studied. It is a temporary undertaking perform for the purpose of creating an innovative product or service that in the end will benefit and give worth to a company or individual. This project would have to be managed. This activity is called Project Management. Project Management is the facility for an individual or company to organize and manage knowledge and resources in order to deliver the work required for a specific project. It requires the management with focus on details, quality, time and budget restraints.its function is to monitor, control and plan projects. In as much as a project is temporary, activities need to be performed and delivered under some constraints such as scope, time and cost.
