Connolly Consulting Associates, Inc. of Wilton, Conn., a recovery audit contractor, will be in Texas in March. Recovery audit contractors (RACs) are companies that focus on providers and suppliers whose billings for Medicare services appear higher than the majority of providers and suppliers in the community, or appear higher for the specialty group. The purpose of using RACs, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), is to reduce waste and overspending, and to decrease and/or eliminate fraudulent claims. Being prepared is the first step in dealing with audit contractors. Here are some things you can do right now to make sure your coding, billing and documentation are in order: Take a sampling of your claims and look at the backup documentation. Bring your coding knowledge up to date. Make sure that you have not ordered tests because of patient demand. Do not make the mistake of thinking you are exempt from reviews because you have an electronic medical record. If records are requested, be sure to respond promptly.
