4 Recovery Education Institute Vision Advancing behavioral healthcare and recovery through supportive educational opportunities. Mission We offer educational opportunities for adults with personal or family behavioral health experiences. As part of the Recovery Model, education nurtures hope and supportive relationships, which furthers efficacy and empowerment. Goals The Recovery Education Institute helps students Increase awareness of education and training opportunities to assist people with behavioral health conditions. 2. Develop academic foundations needed to transfer to a community college or university and successfully complete degree and/or certification requirements. 3. Develop life-long education, employment, and volunteer plans with strategies to achieve these goals. 4. Participate in volunteer opportunities as well as pursue employment in the mental health field or elsewhere.
5 Recovery Education Institute The Recovery Education Institute (REI) assists students in reaching their personal educational goals at NO COST to eligible students. Classes prepare students to enter certification programs, vocational programs, and/or college settings. At REI, students develop the personal and academic skills necessary to succeed with their education. Registration Requirements To become an REI student, one must be over the age of 18, reside in the County of Orange, and have lived experience or have a family member with lived experience in mental health. The enrollment process includes completing a student contact form and an anonymous demographic form, obtaining a student identification card, and being assigned an academic advisor. Students must register for classes with their assigned academic advisor by completing the following steps: Fill out Student Contact Form Receive a Student ID card Attend an Academic Advisement Meeting Participate in a Student Assessment Register for classes Academic Advisement Academic advisement sessions consist of an overall assessment of the student s needs and goals for the future in order to determine classes of interest. During an academic advisement session, students register for classes as well as set up future meetings with their academic advisor. Non-Credit Education Through our partnership with Santiago Canyon College s Orange Education Center (OEC), REI offers several California state certificate classes on-site, and we link students to these resources. Note that when students enroll in any classes falling under this category, there will be a dual enrollment process with OEC. College Credit Courses Through Saddleback Community College and Coastline Community College, several college-accredited classes are offered for transferable units. Students are dual-enrolled with Saddleback Community College and/or Coastline Community College as well as REI. For these courses, REI students are held to the same standards and regulations as the corresponding college. See more under Attendance. Attendance REI promotes self-efficacy and accountability to the fullest intent. For one-session workshops, an unexcused absence is documented for that student. For workshops or classes longer than two sessions, more than one unexcused absence could result in a drop from the class. Unexcused absences in classes jeopardizes a student s ability to register for high-demand classes in the future. After incurring two unexcused absences, students are also required to meet with an academic advisor to re-evaluate the student s needs and continue taking classes at REI. For classes dual-enrolled with Saddleback Community College and/or Coastline Community College, attendance requirements may vary and will be discussed at the first class meeting. Additional Student Services Through appointments, students may request one-to-one assistance from Success Coaches, additional academic advisements, language assistance, tutoring, and computer lab and library/study room access. Student Feedback Following each class, we ask that students complete an evaluation. Please take the time to fill evaluations out as students opinions, ideas, and suggestions are important to evaluating and developing a more successful program.

11 Health Navigation Skill Development Certification Training What is Health Navigation? Health Navigators play an essential role in helping individuals and families address their health-care needs with the right health plan, and Health Navigators educate people about their health plan options. Primarily Health Navigators foster patient autonomy and provide patients with information to enhance their ability to make appropriate health-care choices and/or receive medical care with an enhanced sense of confidence about risks, benefits, and responsibilities. What Will I Learn? Training includes: health consumer engagement strategies, motivation and self awareness enhancement, goal setting and achievement, making appointments, filling out paperwork and completing documentation, communication with the doctor, completing referrals, follow-up care, progress monitoring, billable activities, and health navigation integration with mental health agencies. Why Do We Need It? People with severe mental illness live years less than the general population in the United States.
