1 Cincinnati Christian University Foster School of Biblical Studies, Arts & Sciences ENGL Strategies for College Success (Section 2) Fall 2014 Instructor: Ray Horton & Lacey Neu Location: Presidents Hall, Room 105 Office Phone: Meeting Time: Tues. & Thurs. 12:30 1:20 Course Description A course required of all students admitted conditionally. This course provides the college student with a variety of strategies for writing and reading at the college level, especially during the student s first year. (2 non-credit hours) Course Rationale The purpose of this course is to provide students with an opportunity to cultivate the skills, values, and attitudes necessary to become confident and capable learners. Students will participate in activities to enhance their strengths, to acknowledge their weaknesses, to develop academic skills, and to learn strategies needed to be successful in college. COURSE OBJECTIVES Students who complete this course will Understand the culture of college and the terminology used in college. Assess and inventory current strengths and areas for growth. Set realistic goals and create a workable mission statement. Identify their learning style preferences and be able to apply learning strategies to college work. Use time management strategies to complete tasks. Use a course syllabus to plan an effective study schedule, set goals, and map assignments. Build a schedule that works best for their needs and their degree plans. Identify needed people and resources on campus. Practice good academic skills. Review skills needed for note taking, college writing and college reading and apply to various assignments. Understand the process of completing a degree, transferring to a university, and entering the workforce. To achieve these content objectives, students will Participate in classroom activities. Improve class preparation and learning through Practice exercises. Build critical thinking skills and develop problem-solving abilities through Graded Activities.

2 Required Textbook and Materials Text: Baldwin: The College Experience Compact DISABILITY ACCOMMODATIONS Students who require academic accommodations due to any documented physical, psychological, or learning disability should request assistance from the Academic Support Director within the first two weeks of class. The Academic Support Office is located in the lower level of the Worship and Ministry Building (room 153). You may also contact the office by phone ( ). GRADING POLICY You need a C grade or better to pass this class. You will be doing a variety of assessments and activities. Course Requirements Attendance and Participation You are expected to attend all class sessions and complete all required readings and assignments. In addition, you are expected to participate in class activities and discussions, to complete all in class and out of class writing assignments, and to complete a final project for evaluation. Missing more than 4 hours of class time will result in a grade of FA (failure due to absences). Attendance and Preparation 1) Students are expected to be present and on time for class. Students who are late for class, or who are not engaged in class (sleeping in class, texting, phone, etc) may be counted absent for the day. 2) Please come to class prepared to learn (with books, paper, pencils etc). We will use the book most days so please bring it to class. 3) Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date indicated on the schedule. 4) As a courtesy to me and the other students, please turn off cell phones before coming into class. GRADING SCALE In class Participation (50%) - Since this class relies heavily on attendance, and in class participation, all in class activities and assignments will make up the bulk of each students grade. Students who miss an assignment, or activity, done during class time will not be able to make it up. Homework/ Reading (40%)- All work, and reading designated out of class time will be due at the beginning of the class on the designate date. Late assignments will not be accepted, unless previous arrangements have been made between the student and professor. Reading and homework assignments must be completed before the start of the designated date to ensure an effective class discussion. Final Project (10%)- Each student will be assigned into a group of four to five students, and will work collaboratively to design and present an end of semester project. Each project will

3 have a theme and incorporate the ideologies and skills learned throughout the semester. The groups will have ten to fifteen minutes to present to the class.
