1 August 27, 2013 City of Cedar Rapids ATTN: Mr. Brent Schlotfeldt th Street SW Cedar Rapids, Iowa RE: Ambroz Recreation Center Asbestos Survey Dear Mr. Schlotfeldt: Per your request and authorization, Shive-Hattery, Inc. performed an asbestos survey for the above referenced project on August 21, It is our understanding that the roof may undergo renovation that will disturb suspect asbestos-containing building materials. It was the intent of the survey to determine what materials within the project area actually contain asbestos. Methods and Procedures The review for this project was performed by personnel trained and certified under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) regulations. Available drawings were reviewed and visual observations of the as-built construction were performed to search out possible suspect materials. Partial or destructive testing was not performed to reveal concealed conditions. During the course of the asbestos survey, homogeneous areas of similar construction materials were defined. A sample from each suspect homogeneous area was collected from inconspicuous locations. Pertinent information such as location, color, etc. was recorded for each suspect material. The samples were then sent to an accredited laboratory for analysis. The samples were analyzed for asbestos fibers utilizing the Polarized Light Microscopy method of analysis by of Phoenix, AZ. Each sample was analyzed for the six different types of fibrous asbestos forms of which a percentage, by volume, is estimated and summarized. As defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency mandated AHERA regulations, the suspect material is considered an asbestos-containing material (ACM) if the material contains more than 1.5 percent of any one or a combination of asbestos fibers. Pertinent information for each bulk sample has been summarized on the sample analytical results which can be found at the end of this report. Summary of Findings Nineteen samples were collected from thirty-three homogeneous areas. Materials tested with an asbestos content greater than 1.5% are considered to be asbestos-containing. Flashing Black Roof Flashing 0% Recommendations It is our recommendation that the roof, flashing, coping stone, and metal vent on Roof Level A and the window caulk on Roof Level B be abated. It is in the Owner s best interest to abate all asbestos from the project area and have these spaces asbestos free before the renovation begins.
