3 Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences Course Descriptions HSC 105 Careers in Health Science (2) This course will look at the myriad of health care careers and the skills necessary to become a healthcare professional. This course is designed for those individuals wishing to change careers or just looking for available options in career choices. Guest lecturers will be utilized to explore options in the healthcare arena. The course will be taught in three sections: development of life skills for success in the healthcare community, job search skills to gain individual career goals, and exploration of healthcare career options. HSC 110 Medical Terminology (3) This course is a systematic approach to health profession and medical words of Greek and Latin origin. The course focuses on word parts (combining forms, prefixes, and suffixes), accurate spelling, and pronunciation of terms along with abbreviations and other words classified as: diagnostic, anatomical, surgical, radiological, and therapeutic. Some anatomy is discussed to correlate the use and context of the terms. HSC 120 Strategies for Success in Critical Thinking and Math for Health Sciences (2) This course will provide the basic elements of adult learning. Various learning styles, time management, test taking strategies, special study strategies, learning through reflective writing, and critical thinking in health care will be explored. A secondary focus of this course is safe medication administration. The Dimensional Analysis method will be used for dosage calculations. Prerequisite: Health Science Major and/or permission of the instructor. HSC 200 Health Science Patient Care (3) This course is designed to assist the health care professional in utilizing the basic patient care and assessment skills necessary to practice in his/her discipline according to accepted professional standards. Topics include patient interaction, vital signs, infection control, transfer techniques, health records and documentation, and patient empathy. The course is geared toward students who are in health science programs. Prerequisite: Entry into Health Science Program or permission of instructor. HSC/MKT 305 Health Care Marketing (3) This course will serve as an introduction to the basic principles of Health Care Marketing including, but not limited to, the study of behaviors of health care customers, identifying local and regional needs, the study and development of socially and ethically responsible strategies involved in Health Care Marketing, and the concepts and considerations of products, pricing, place (distribution), and promotion included in the tactical marketing mix. (Cross-listed with MKT 305) HSC 309 Community Health (3) An interactive course that discusses the work of community health agencies at all levels while analyzing health a wellness issues of various age groups. Dialogue about prevalent diseases, epidemiology, and health problems in our society today is included. Approaches to healthy living and lifestyle diseases are discussed along with current topics of importance. Class participation is a must. Prerequisite: ENG 101. Core Studies: HS. HSC/PHT 310 Pharmacology (3) In this course the student will learn the primary drugs used for each body system, concentrating particularly on the top 100 retail and top 100 hospital drugs. The focus of

4 the class will be for the student to learn the drug classifications and how to determine class by drug name, and the side effects and dispensing issues relative to these drugs. (Cross-listed as PHT 310) HSC 311 Cardiac Anatomy and Physiology (1) This class is geared toward students in professional health science program who want to increase their knowledge in the anatomy and electrophysiology of the heart. Topics include: cardiac anatomy and cell structure, electro conduction, and dysrhythmia recognition and treatment in adults and children. Prerequisite: BIO 204 and BIO 205. HSC/REL 313 Health and the Search for Human Meaning (3) The course explores topics and ideas from both intellectual and faith-based perspectives, emphasizing the Dominican Pillars of prayer, study, ministry, and community in the context of reflection on health and the search for human meaning. The course readings and discussions will consider the significance of illness, recovery, health, grief and other related topics relative to human meaning. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or permission of instructor. (Cross listed with REL 313) HSC 320 The U.S. Healthcare System (3) A current overview of the U.S. healthcare system that includes a historical perspective, delivery systems, health care workers, payment systems, economical impact, and governmental influence. The course will also help students understand how the U.S. system fits into a global health care system. This is an r l³ Reading Supportive course. HSC/MGT 321 Legal Issues in Health Care (3) An in depth study of legal issues affecting the practice and organizational supervision in the health sciences. Legal theories and current case law are analyzed. Standards of practice in various fields are reviewed, and approaches to staff supervision and training are considered. Students who present specific course work in legal issues in specific discipline will be evaluated for credit individually. (Cross listed with MGT 321) HSC/RAD 330 Advanced Patient Care (3) Development of advanced patient care and management knowledge including cardiac, critical care, trauma, surgical and special services. Routine and emergency care, as well as infection control, is covered. This optimal care includes a broad understanding of the cultural diversity, demographics, socio-economic factors and other considerations necessary for a health care worker to serve and address concerns of patients, their families and co-workers. (Cross-listed as RAD 330). Core Studies: S, GP HSC 350 Professional Development in Health Sciences (3) An exploration of professional organizations and resources, opportunities, continuing education, personal and ethical aspects of health sciences careers, and career management for health sciences professionals. HSC 351 Developments in Medical Technology (3) Examination of the nature and professional and social impact of new and evolving technologies in the medical, health care, and life sciences. Prerequisite: An ethics course. HSC/PHT 360 Drugs and Society (3) An overview of legal and illegal drugs and the impact of use on individuals and society. Use and abuse of prescribed pharmaceuticals as well as the use of substances for performance enhancement will be analyzed. Core Studies: HS, S, GP. (Cross-listed as PHT 360)

5 HSC/MGT 400 Healthcare Organization Management (3) A study of the application of general principles of management and supervision and specific managerial techniques in planning, human resource management, financial issues, and third party and community relations. Pre-requisite: BUS 300 and MGT 340 or permission of the instructor. (Cross listed with MGT 400) HSC 450 Clinical Quality Assurance (3) An overview of quality management and compliance issues and techniques as they apply to the health sciences field. Legal and regulatory issues, management approaches, training and supervision techniques, quality assurance organization, and planning will be covered. Prerequisite: BUS 300 HSC 470 Health Care Policy (3) A study of the role, formulation, and influence of public policy in health care. Economic and social issues and concerns of social justice will be discussed along with the direct effects of policy on health care delivery. Prerequisite: HSC 321 or permission of the instructor. HSC 480 Health Science Evidence-Based Practice (4) A course designed to explore the components of evidence-based knowledge and its application in enhancing managerial decisions in healthcare professions. Research and statistical processes will be used to interpret practice problems and solutions. Information gained in this course will be used for HSC 490. Prerequisites: MAT 200. This is an r l³ Reading Intensive course. HSC 490 Health Science Capstone Course (3) A highpoint course where students are self-directed to identify a problem or issue related to health care, health care professions, health care delivery, or patient care, using knowledge gained in previous coursework and literature review, then devise a solution to the problem and present their findings in a peer-review setting. The course will emphasize knowledge of leadership roles in healthcare while applying ethical principles with a broad oversight that includes an economical, political, social, legal, and systematic and organizational perspective. Prerequisite: HSC 450 and Senior standing in degree. This is an r l³ Reading Intensive course. HSC 275/375/475 Internship/Externship (1-6) All programs may offer the opportunity for internships/externships, travel experience or other similar experiences. These experiences are negotiated between the student and their program advisor. In addition some programs may have specific internship/ externship requirements and course numbers. May be repeated for credit as the topics vary. MGT/BUS 300 Management (3) A study of fundamental management concepts for both business majors, and for other students preparing to work in an organizational setting. Covers theories and practices of management in business and organizational settings, and provides a balanced, comprehensive overview of the traditional management functions in planning/decision-making, organizing, leading, and controlling. (Cross listed with BUS 300)

6 MGT 340 Human Resource Management (3) A study of the activities involved in acquiring, maintaining, and developing an organization s workforce and human capital. Topics within these three phases include resource planning, job analysis, recruiting, training, compensation and benefits, motivation, and appraisal. Prerequisite: MGT/BUS 300. MGT 342 Organizational Leadership and Motivation (3) An examination of the managerial and supervisory functions and skills in organizational leadership. The interrelationships between leadership and the managerial functions of planning, organizing, executing, and controlling are examined. Individual and interpersonal processes within the organizational environment are studied, and various theories of motivation and organizational behavior are examined. Prerequisite: MGT/BUS 300 or permission of the department.
