4 Month 1: Budgets, Forecasting, and Cash Flow Cash is the lifeblood of any business. How are you managing it? In this session, we ll explore: Factors that affect cash flow How to prepare a budget and cash flow projection How to calculate break even sales Month 2: Public Relations & Digital Marketing- Telling Your Story to Reach Your Customers Now more than ever, businesses need to capitalize on every opportunity to reach their target audiences. This course will provide tips, tricks and tools for reaching your customers, from landing that news story, to social media marketing, to winning in search engine rankings. In this session, you ll learn how to: Create an effective and integrated PR/Marketing strategy to support growth Identify, develop, and capitalize on media opportunities Implement digital channels as part of your marketing mix. [Finance] [Marketing] Month 3: Hiring for Small Business This session discusses the process for hiring employees in a small business. It addresses standard hiring practices, hiring regulations & tips for ensuring a healthy start to the employment relationship. In this session, you will: Know the steps required in the hiring process and why each step is important Learn basic screening and interview techniques Understand the performance evaluation process and how to implement the evaluation process in your business Identify tactics and channels to recruit talent Month 4: Digital Marketing Strategies Digital Marketing is becoming more and more complex. A successful online marketing plan includes many factors such as how to get your website to the first page of the search engines. In this session, you will learn the importance of: Creating a Local Search presence for your business and how to get to page one of the search engines with a local search listing. How to find the best words to get your exact target market to your website through keyword research. Writing Title Tags and Meta-Descriptions: what are they and why do you need them? [Human Resources] [Marketing] 4
5 Month 5: Building Your Leadership Tool Kit What is leadership? There are so many definitions that it is difficult to choose just one! At the end of the day, you need to ask yourself: What kind of leader was I today? This session will give you the tools and techniques you need in your Leadership Tool Kit to answer this question. In this session, we ll discuss: The importance of long-term, innovative thinking and strategy to guide your business in the present moment The intricacies of communicating clearly to your team, making decisions, holding your team accountable, setting expectations, and managing change The responsibility of the leader to deliver on their commitments, empower and inspire their team, and make things happen Using metrics to motivate [Personal Development] Month 6: Selling in a Small Business In small business, cash is king. Without a solid strategy for driving revenue to the business it more than likely fail. Now, in a hyper competitive market place, businesses have to work harder and longer to maintain their sales and fight off revenue reductions. In this class we will discuss how business owners can identify the three critical variables in their business that drive sales and how to impact those variables to drive revenue to not only maintain, but grow the business. After this session, you will be able to: Understand the sales process and cycle of your business Identify and strategize the three critical revenue variables for your business Understand the importance of innovation and develop strategies to become more innovative [Sales] Month 7: Financing Your Business Your growing business has capital needs. In this session, we ll cover: Taking a trip across the capital landscape and learn what bankers look for to qualify loans Exploring micro-loans and crowd funding Deepening your understanding of your P&L and Balance Sheet through an interactive game Practicing financial statement analysis through a small group case-study exercise Month 8: HR: Terminations & Regulations This session presents employee management, discipline and termination for small businesses. You ll learn: How to ensure an employee is classified correctly and why it is important The rules for paying employees and what can and can t be included as part of their pay structure How to determine when discipline or termination is appropriate and what steps to take in issuing discipline or termination The impact of not terminating an employee in a timely fashion [Finance] [Human Resources] 5
6 Month 9: Work Smarter, Not Harder If there s one thing that s almost universal about small businesses, it s that there s not enough time, money, and capacity to go around. This is especially true for businesses that have been established for a few years because we mostly build our businesses on grit and effort, not on systematically putting the people, processes, and systems in alignment so that they effectively work together. In this class, we will discuss why and how the key to building a better business is building better systems. In this session, you ll: Assess key goals and activities in your business that drive results Determine which of those key activities have the biggest effect on your business Develop low-barrier-to-entry ways to build systems around those goals and activities Create a rough action plan for how to build one key system [Operations] Month 10: Team Building Did we mention your team is important? In this session, we ll cover: The importance of a strong team and how that impacts your operations Team activities you can use in your business to increase engagement Metrics you can use to measure your team s effectiveness [Human Resources] It doesn t matter which class I ve been in. 8 Small Business Management includes: Up-to 2 hours of one-on-one advising in confidential monthly meetings during the Small Business Management program. 30 hours of classroom business education with 10 monthly 3-hour sessions taught by subject-matter experts. Cohort learning and networking to discuss challenges, exchange resources, and find solutions with peers. Access to 25+ veteran business advisors with a wide range of backgrounds and expertise including business strategy, search engine optimization, Quickbooks, and financing. Access to market research resources such as Southern Oregon University Market Research Institute, SBDCNet, Reference USA, MarketLink and Euromonitor. The Investment For the 10-month, 10-session program plus one-on-one advising, tuition for Small Business Management is $1,500. A second person from your business can attend for half price $750. Portland Community College offers payment plans. 8
